Researching up on it more, I believe it's a feature called SAC or self adjusting clutch.

thanks yelcab - I think that was probably the more appropriate question.

Suggestion
But if you clutch plate is worn out and it has a lot of miles, it is often worth it to just replace the whole kit: clutch, pressure plate, TO bearing and even the pilot bearing, Going back in is not worth the savings.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

From past experience, I know that you can reinstall or use used pressure plates as long as you can re tension the fingers. However, when I look at a 996/997 pressure plate (pictures online), the 3 springs you would pin/lock after you've re tensioned the fingers are covered and not visible. So, are the 996/997 pressure plates only meant to be installed once? What if during a typical clutch job an error is made installing the friction plate or the flywheel and the installer has to remove the parts to reinstall?
Can the pressure plate fingers be re tensioned? Do they come in the box pre tensioned or is that not even necessary with these clutch kits? I've never seen a new oem sachs clutch in a box on 996/997's before but as I said, I have had this experience working on BMW's in the past.
thanks!
pressure plate on the left - 3 springs to hold tension appear covered. can this be re tensioned at the fingers?
What is pre-tension? No such thing with this set up. You
can
re-use the pressure plate if it is not cracked, not scored, not burned. But if you clutch plate is worn out and it has a lot of miles, it is often worth it to just replace the whole kit: clutch, pressure plate, TO bearing and even the pilot bearing, Going back in is not worth the savings. And the pressure plate has been known to crack all by iself while the clutch is still meaty.
thanks yelcab - I think that was probably the more appropriate question. Most (in fact all) clutches I've ever worked on the pressure plate arrives in the box with a metal star that's attached to the fingers. Once you've installed this type of pressure plate you remove that metal star. Looks like at least for 996/997 pressure plates they come from the factory boxes without tension.
Researching up on it more, I believe it's a feature called SAC or self adjusting clutch. Looks like 911's from the modern era at least don't use em.
Here's a link to what appears to be how our SAC clutches operate. Interesting and it does suggest that these clutches do require tension before being installed? But perhaps tension created after the install?
