They checked the pump for play at that time and it had a big wobble that I could clearly see but no leak or noticeable noise yet.

Just had the car serviced yesterday in anticipation of the drive to SoCal and they found a ton of play in the water pump. No leaking yet but the pulley had a surprising amount of slop. This OEM water pump was installed last August and now 11 months/42,000 km later is toast. The pump was warranty but the re and re wasn't. Is this a common occurance? Can't say I've ever owned a vehicle that has needed water pump replacement so frequently. Total of 116,000 km on the car (so far). Thank goodness it's fixed now before we took the long road.

Standard dealer service warranty is 1 year labor, 2 years parts, and IIRC 24K miles. A water pump can fail at any time. Most last a relatively long time. However, there are exceptions and it reads like you experienced the exception. Get the water pump replaced and move on. Just curious: What prompted the shop to check the water pump? No leak right? Was the pump making noise? When my Boxster's water pump proved to be bad it was making noise and then upon checking I found some play. Not much either but more play than the other accessory drives had and they didn't have any play. The inside edge of the belt was sharp, too, from rubbing as the bit of play at the water pump caused the belt to mis-track some.

The shop (Indy) was doing a thorough look over and service before our drive to California this week. I asked them to check the serpentine belt as I noticed some wear.
