Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Use second' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use second' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Noticed this kind of pure note playing intermittently at higher speeds, by which I really mean 45mph or so, in third...it comes and goes, subtle and this is the first time I heard it.
Any idears as to what it could be? Not related to shifting, and I do have the throttle pressed but it's not necessarily accelerating the car, simply maintaining speed.
Thanks in advance.

I'm having a hard time imagining what an orchestral whine sounds like...can you post a sound clip?
Some causes for sound at speed:
* Worn/poorly aligned tires
* Windshield seal is leaking (this would be more of a whistle)
* Ground loop in the stereo equipment amplifying alternator noise
It's the variocam. Orchestral is a good description because it's a beautiful sound. Now get those RPMs above 3k and leave them there. It's better for the engine and the driver!
Admittedly, these engines make sounds like nothing you've heard before. They do "sing", and whine, and have that guttural growl. There is all sorts of whirring and symphonies going on. That's what makes these cars so visceral, and why they are a blast to drive. And, it does take practice particularly in shifting and finding the right spot in the RPM range. Your first instinct is to keep the RPM's in a known sweetspot, around 3,000 to 3,500 RPM's. I was just kidding because driving around in city traffic, 2nd gear can seem a bit wild. Not to suggest that you use the entire RPM range every time you are out tooling around, but consider that with the 7,250 top RPM, 1st gear will take you to just under 40 MPH, 2nd gear is good for about 65 MPH, 3rd gear takes you to just under 100 MPH, 4th gear will take you to 125 MPH, 5th to 150 MPH, and 6th to just over 180 MPH. Maximum torque is between 3500 to 4500 RPM. If you play around up there, you will really get to know the car. So play around with it a bit, practice and enjoy! They are fast, so be safe. And the best thing is, it won't break. Not saying beat on it, but you've got to have an attitude that matches the car's potential. They love it when they are driven well.
