Since the securing wingnut had only been hand-tightened, I decided to use a crescent wrench on the ears and tighten it more.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

On my 2002 C4 Cab, for the last few years I have been trying unsuccessfully to isolate the cause of a metallic knocking sound in front. I have tried almost very suggestion in this forum over the years, to no avail. Last week I decided to detail the car, and in the process removed the spare collapsible tire which had never been on the ground. I noticed on the Frunk floor where the edge of the wheel rim rests on the raised surfaces of the floor, the carpet has been worn out completely at spots where the rim contacts the floor, producing a metal-to-metal contact. Rub marks on rim edges confirmed this. I placed 4 pieces of 1/4"-thick double-corrugated cardboard over the rubbed areas and reinstalled the spare wheel. Since the securing wingnut had only been hand-tightened, I decided to use a crescent wrench on the ears and tighten it more. Driving the car for the last couple of weeks over the very roads which had produced the knocking sounds, I have detected NO knocking sounds. I am hoping that the fix will hold. So far, so good. I will update this post after a few more weeks of driving (weather permitting).

Cool. This is something I hadn't thought of until Skip @Porschetech3 mentioned it regarding spare tire front end clunks a while back.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
