Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So Yes the title is true I did something pretty stupid. I had no idea there was any locking required to remove the housing of the IMS. During a clutch replacement i saw that the Housing was leaking from the seal, My thoughts were "Oh Let me remove this and re seal it" not knowing it was a pretty vital component and there is some steps that are required before removing the housing itself. Now here's my Question for anybody that would like to help, I was able to re-Install the housing back in without much force and a bit of recentering. Has any catastrophic damage been done yet? Possibly timing jumped? I did not turn the crank at all from the time removing it to reinstalling yet. I would just like to know what i can do to prevent grenading this engine. I am definitely afraid of starting and also turning it over by hand. When the housing was out i saw that the Bearing it self slightly moved over to the 1 o'clock position but stated previously i was able to re center by hand and get it reinstalled. Any help and insight would be appreciated, Forgive me in advance I'm new. Thanks! 2001 996 C2

On a five chain engine, that's what's in your 2001, unlikely it jumped any teeth. You can rotate the crank pully clockwise to tdc. Pull the lower cam plugs and see if they are lined up with the cam cover. One of the banks will be lined up. Rotate the crank another revolution and then the other bank should be lined up. Research timing a 5 chain engine to see what I'm talking about. Here is a good pic of what it should look like.

POST 3Original post

Put the Impact Gun down carefully .....and slowly back away from the Car...... Now you need to study up checking the Cam Timing.......also the proper procedure for IMSB removal..... Since this is a 5 chain motor you are probably OK, the 5 chain is a lot less likely to jump time than the 3 chain motor, but now you have to put the engine at TDC ( and lock the CAMs) to find out .... BTW :: I'm curious about that name....if you need help on thinking of a better match I can help......

Here is some Photos i took today of the cams.Bank Two Rear Exhaust cam And Bank Front One Exhaust Cam. They seem lined up. No locking tools yet those are coming. Just eyeballing for now, what do Y'all think? The photos provided suck. Stressfull few days with this car for me. Who wants a beer? I DO!

Did you rotate the crankshaft pully to tdc? Do that and take a picture of both. Then rotate it another 360 and take another pic of both. Only one bank will look lined up like the pic i showed you for each rotation. Are you replacing the ims bearing? No need for locking tools unless you are doing that or retiming the engine.

Not doing IMS but i guess its nice to have when time comes. That first picture is TDC Bank 2 Exhaust cam. its dead on. I will turn over and recheck. Finding clear instructions have been a struggle for me. Most people often confuse you rather than guide you.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I have reassembled the car and it seems too run and idle fine, revs out good and doesn't miss. i do hear some questionable noise but also could be me just freaking out. Now regarding cam deviation should i be checking that just to triple check and also for longevity purposes to see if the chain pads are wearing or timing etc. Zero codes and runs and idles fine revs out fine.
