Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi folks - noticed a worrying engine sound with my 996 carrera this morning. Drove 50 yards, stopped and reversed back to my parking space. I got a video where you can hear the noise. Anyone have any ideas what this could be? https://youtube.com/shorts/E7TS13sXaw4?feature=share

Tristan, not sure what I really hear. Sounds like a humming or bearing noise, but I can't be sure. Does it make that sound at rest (motor running, but car parked)?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Its most prominent after my wife says something and theres a beep. Ill go and check if it does it when I just start the car and let it idle.

POST 4Original post

Sounds like you are low on power steering fluid. You can easily check the level. Then you have to figure out what caused it.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I took it for a drive around the block and it was generally fine, though thought I heard the noise when turning. I parked up and revved the car with the steering centre, and then full lock each side. Seems the noise is there when in full lock. new video: You Tube its also much less prominent than earlier this morning.

It's most likely your power steering fluid is low. Some days its louder than others. Cold days its very loud, warm days its not. I just went thru it with a ps leak in a high pressure hose. Search for "power steering leak" on RL and you will find a recent thread i started in the topic to figure out where the leak may be. Check your fluid level. If it's low add ps fluid. It only needs a little so pour a very little bit at a time. Get yourself a turkey baster to drain it if you over fill.

POST 7Original post

+1 for PS fluid low. The question is(if it's low): where is it going? Good luck!
