Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

One thing that I will warn about is the three connectors that will need to be disconnected on the back of the instrument cluster in order to fully remove it.
Leading evidence: 'Disconnect on the back of the instrument cluster in order' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect on the back of the instrument cluster in order' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Easy enough to replace.....just find a donor cluster and use the face plate.

Get with these guys...they may be able to replace the lens.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I believe that they can be replaced and re-pinned using other VAG connectors as they are the same but that will be an additional job on top of the lens replacement.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

When I bought my 996, it had a small but deep scratch in the tachometer lens. I thought the lens would be easily replaced, but now I'm not so sure. After a little bit of searching for an instrument cluster lens assembly on EBay I'm thinking just the lens assembly is going to be hard to find. I don't see a part number for it in the fiche, either. It is starting to really annoy me now. I can't not see it. Anybody out there have any ideas? I don't think it can be simply polished out, just too deep. Has anyone replaced their lens? How'd you do it?
Scratch is just to the left of the 59 readout.
Seems like you'd need to find a donor gauge cluster to swap that out. It's not a terribly difficult job and the gauge cluster comes out fairly easily. One thing that I will warn about is the three connectors that will need to be disconnected on the back of the instrument cluster in order to fully remove it. Having had to remove mine recently, you'll find that after 20 years of heat cycles, those connectors will be very brittle and may start to flake apart. It won't be bad to the point where they are unusable but some pieces may come off. I believe that they can be replaced and re-pinned using other VAG connectors as they are the same but that will be an additional job on top of the lens replacement. Something to keep in mind.

Just remember mileage and some other functions are stored in the instrument cluster.

I still have all these pieces from when I did this way back when
The lenses are still intact
These are from a 996.1
You can see in my post the lenses are just like a front cover for the gauge cluster they just snap on the front all in one piece very easy to get off and on once you remove the cluster from your car
Easy enough to replace.....just find a donor cluster and use the face plate. I love the **** approach.....reminds me of myself :P). Certain little things will drive me nuts!
Thanks everyone for the info, much appreciated. I have had my instrument cluster out of the car at least once. My cable connectors are still in pretty good shape, not brittle. I took the lens panel off the cluster to see if I could just pop out the tach lens and glue in a new one. That's not easy because all 5 lenses are actually formed from one piece of clear plastic bonded to the black frame. Besides, the tach lens is not a perfect circular disc, there is some shape to it. I think the best approach would be to find a lens cluster that is un-marred for a 996.2 somewhere. But even that is iffy as most every lens cluster is also accompanied by the rest of the instruments for a lot more money. Maybe I might have to buy the whole assembly on eBay or somewhere, swap the lens assembly and sell the instrument cluster with my scratched tach lens at a discount to someone less **** than I. The search goes on...
