Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I decided to attempt replacing the starter and didn't turn out too well. Once I got everything back together and went to hook up the battery, I noticed some clicking type sounds which sounded similar to what a bad battery sounds like, for maybe a second or two. As i went to crank it, the car started right up alright sounded like the starter kept spinning and immediately shut it off. I then noticed some smoke coming for under the car and the electrical burn smell. I took everything back apart to double check everything and I couldn't visually see anything wrong. Starter is wired correctly, and couldn't see any place where the y cable could possibly be grounding out on. I'm going to completely pull the starter out and make sure it's sitting properly. If anyone has any other ideas how i can go about troubleshooting before giving it another shot would be much appreciated. New starter wired up

POST 2Original post

If the Y cable was shorted out, you would know it when the car was not running. From what you described, the solenoid sounds like it isn't retracting the pinion gear. Maybe a faulty ignition switch that doesn't cut power to the solenoid? If you pull the starter out and try and start the car as normal, you will be able to see if that is the problem. Other ideas?

POST 3Original post

Please tell us you bought a brand new Bosch starter. You can get one off Amazon.

How would I know if I shorted it out? From what I can see, the wire doesn't appear burned/scorched anywhere, but there was definitely some burning smell and smoke coming from the car after immediately shutting it down. I'm going to remove the starter and take it to get tested to make sure it's working properly.

POST 5Original post

The smoke and burning smell were from the starter being stuck on will draw extreme amperage and generate heat in the cables and starter. I would replace the starter.

Sorry, you would know even if the car wasn't running because it would still be burning and if not, you would definitely see damage to the cable. If the solenoid didn't retract and the starter kept going, the current would have come primarily from the battery and the portion of the Y cable affected is more likely to be between the starter and the Jump point rather that from the starter to the alternator. I would look there as well.

Just pulled it back out and on my way to get it bench tested.
