I did a steering wheel wrap last winter and found a wire disconnected under the air bag so I soldered & repaired that wire.
Leading evidence: 'Disconnect under the air bag so i soldered &' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). I have replaced both the brake and clutch pedal switches.
Replace clutch switch and cc has worked ever since

So I then replaced the clutch switch and CC has worked ever since

Try pulling the clutch pedal up and checking whether the cruise turns on.

One other thought, bend the contact tabs upwards a little bit in the brake light socket so it makes a good clean connection.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all, I've searched & read other threads but haven't been able to find an answer.
The cruise control on my 02 has only worked sporaticaly since I bought it a year and a half ago.
I did a steering wheel wrap last winter and found a wire disconnected under the air bag so I soldered & repaired that wire. That got the cruise working pretty regularly after that.
However, it stopped working again...
My right rear brake light is not working, it's a wiring issue on the light itself that I've been working through. I've heard that the brake light can be a cause of the cruise not working.
What thoughts do the 996 geniuses have???
I normally don't use cruise, but I recently took an 22 hour round trip in the car and it would have been really really nice to have. Thanks in advance!
Find out why the rear brake light isn't working. That may solve your cruise control problem. I think Adrian might have a replacement wiring harness for the rear brakes. One other thought, bend the contact tabs upwards a little bit in the brake light socket so it makes a good clean connection. Dielectric grease is your friend.

Manual transmission? If yes, and your clutch helper spring is broken, it might be the switch on the pedal. Try pulling the clutch pedal up and checking whether the cruise turns on.
I had the same issue.
Firstly I had a code for my brake light switch (implausable) and I replaced it with an after market one. Still I would have CC for the first 1-30 minutes of driving and then it would stop.
So I then replaced the clutch switch and CC has worked ever since
Oh awesome, I'll give that a try! Thanks so far!
Sadly... I just had surgery on my clutch foot so I'll be driving an automatic Hyundai Sonata for the next 6 weeks
Using my time on the couch to prep & plan through various projects.
Push both your clutch pedal and your brake pedal down and feel around for the electrical switch. Each of these switches are part of the cruise circuit. There is a small plunger on each switch, high up on the pedal, pull that plunger out from the switch as far as it will go and let the pedal come back to its normal position. The plunger will click as you pull it out.
is the green light on the dash lit up?
I reread this and found it doesn't make the point it should have made. Apologies.
The issue I had with CC not working was the clutch helper spring. It had broken and was not returning the clutch pedal to the point where it triggered the switch. The CC was not turning on because it thought the clutch pedal was depressed. The fix was to change the clutch helper spring. The switch was fine.
Here's the crazy part that you will need to figure out for your personalization. My clutch always had a pretty stiff feel to it, because the spring was broken. I didn't think anything of it. But when I changed out the spring, it became super light and was too easy. Almost Toyota easy. So i bought a second one that was made for the Turbo cars. The spring in the Turbo version gives the pedal a heavier feel.
Almost the same here, with a twist my cruise control light comes on with press of the stalk button but cruise control will not engage. I have replaced both the brake and clutch pedal switches. Anyone know the fix for me?
99 996 cab manual
My car was 996.2 which has an electrically controlled throttle.
Your car's throttle, if I understand correctly, is cable operated.
My first car in 1994 was a Subaru Liberty that had cruise control. I mention this because one day I was looking at the throttle linkage on top of the flat four engine and noticed there were 'two' cables connected to the pivot arm that opened/closed the throttle. I asked the mechanic and he said the second was for cruise control and pointed to an actuator box behind and said the ECU will open/close the throttle by pulling or releasing on the second cable.
I suspect that a good starting point is to see if your throttle has one (pedal) or both (pedal and CC) connected.
I also found this thread that talks about the wires being broken..
