Not being lazy i suppose more an issue of not being tempted to replace something thst looks ok "while im there" and run the risk of tweaking something like the rack which would be a nightmare.

I may grab a clamp that I can tighten with a ratchet instead of the part included with the boot kit, which is one of those sliding ones that grab into barbs on the ring.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

@Enzo665 - can rent an inner tie rod tool at autozone, etc or get one off amazon/harbor freight

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20310221

Yeah thanks called them earlier and they have one for me - tomorrow's plan. Never knew these existed (also never replaced a tie rod)

POST 6Original post

Be careful not to rush this; first, dry-fit the tool onto the new tie rod to estimate the required depth. Given the size of the tool head, it's sometimes necessary to slightly turn the steering wheel to create more space. Be careful not to apply too much leverage to the end of the rack, as this will put stress on the seals and could lead to leaks later. The loosening/tightening torque is relatively low, around 80 Nm.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20310508

Thanks for this half of me is debating the necessity of replacing the inner arm. Thr join looks real good and the arm holds its position well in the air with the ball joint at the hub end split. May do just the outer arm because that joint is already split and the bushing has dry rot. But the inner arm is so clean - well.protected with that boot i guess. Car has 40K miles on it. Not being lazy i suppose more an issue of not being tempted to replace something thst looks ok "while im there" and run the risk of tweaking something like the rack which would be a nightmare.

POST 8Original post

Give the inner tie rods a series of strong tugs to feel for any play. You can continue with them as long as theyre not wiggling.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 20310720

On the 996 the inner tie rods never seem to wear out. If there is no 'in/out play in them I'd just do the outer tie rods and call it a day....

POST 10Original post

Replaced one of mine last week after an MOT fail. Full lock the steering and get a 32mm spanner on it. May need to tray a few different angles with the spanner but it comes off easily enough. If there is no play, don't bother but getting the clip back on the boot is a PITA!

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 20311236

The large inside clip on the boot is indeed a pain I may grab a clamp that I can tighten with a ratchet instead of the part included with the boot kit, which is one of those sliding ones that grab into barbs on the ring.
