Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello! I bought my 996 a few months ago, and am very happy with it. My very first Porsche and first Manual car. However, I've noticed some quirks. When upshifting to 5th gear, once in a while, I get denied. I go back to the neutral position, rev match, and reselect 5th, and it goes in no problem. Recently, when downshifting to 1st, no matter how hard I push the clutch or how perfect the rev match is, I'm getting feedback through the shift lever, which I assume is a very light grind. I'm assuming these issues can be attributed to shift cables being out of alignment. I'd like some input from the forum before I go spending my weekend on this. For the moment, I won't downshift into 1st anymore to prevent this from progressing.

POST 2Original post

Could be the cables/shifter may need to be aligned. Also helps to replace the old engine mounts and transmission mounts if they are old. But I found over the last 23 years, that my 996.2 has never liked being down shifted to first while moving. A throttle blip can help, but if I am slowing for a stop, I go from 2nd to neutral. Your shift to 5th may be just getting used to the throw, or on of the items above. I have found the trans in the 996.2 to be pretty damn durable over the years. Even with over 110 track days on it. If anything, consider changing your fluid. Many guys swear by the Porsche fluid. I have used Millers Nano 75w-90 for years which has worked smoothly and well. But just went to Motul 300W 75w-90 off of the recomendation of Guard since I have a Guard LSD. Good luck with the 996.2. Great car!
