I cleaned up and reused the original pistons fitted with new rings.
Leading evidence: 'Install with new rings' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install with new rings' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I replaced #5 & #6 cylinders at S-Tec in Orange, CA.

It had a cracked #5 Cyl and we checked the roundness of all cylinders and #6 was the only one that was slightly out of round so I had it replaced also.

Were all the other used old pistons/rings re-used in OEM old loco-sil cylinders..?.
Replace (re-sleeve{iron or aluminum}.?) cyl 5 & 6 and why

who recommended to replace (re-sleeve{iron or Aluminum}.?) cyl 5 & 6 and why...?

Within a minute or so, while it was running, he unplugged a connector on the left side of the engine bay, kind of high and near the upper intake tube and the coolant reservoir, very easy to get to, and the tick went away.

Suggestion
If you have a stethoscope, you may want to use it as it could be one of your pistons has clearance and you could isolate the noise to a specific cylinder using a stethoscope.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I havent even fixed it yet, he said it was no big deal, will replace next time I send it in for something.
Did a rebuild of my 1999 911 engine and transmission last year. Runs great and I thought everything was good. I replaced #5 & #6 cylinders at S-Tec in Orange, CA. I've put about 1,500 miles on it and enjoy the ride. After a cruise when I parked it in the garage I noticed a ticking noise in the engine. No high revs on the cruise and I probably didn't exceeded 4,500 RPM under load. It's very noticable but it goes away at 1,800 RPM. Sounds like it's coming from 4-5-6 bank but there are no other issues I can find. Can't figure out how it stops ticking at 1,800 RPM. Any ideas?
Interesting problem to diagnose. When the ticking is present at 1800 rpm and below is the oil pressure significantly lower?
One possibility is something that requires oil pressure to operate correctly may not be fully pumped up below 1800 rpm - maybe a lifter is sticking? Maybe something in the variocam chain tensioning? I would think a rod bearing would get louder as rpm increase not quieter - but others may have much more insight here than myself.
Could be an exhaust leak, as well, especially since it is a new rebuild - possibly one of the bolts is loose and you have a leak past one of the ports on the header?
Good luck. Let us know what you find.

who recommended to replace (re-sleeve{iron or Aluminum}.?) cyl 5 & 6 and why...? Or was that your idea..? What pistons and size were used...? Were all the other used old pistons/rings re-used in OEM old loco-sil cylinders..?. Or did you get all new pistons...?
What was the reason to rebuild engine..? How many miles were on engine before rebuild..? What else was reconditioned/replaced..?
I bought it in a good deal with the engine out of the car and 85,000 miles on it. It had a cracked #5 Cyl and we checked the roundness of all cylinders and #6 was the only one that was slightly out of round so I had it replaced also. I cleaned up and reused the original pistons fitted with new rings.
Oil pressure isn't low at startup and early idle but does drop off after it warms up. I'm going to replace the oil pressure spring and piston next but was wondering if anyone has been through this before.
Slightly loose spark plug causes a tick / chirp noice when the engine is warm or hot. This sound usually goes away on higher rpm's.
Try first re-torquing the plugs to factory specs.
If you suspect thin oil / low oil pressure is part of the issue, consider 5w-40 or 5w-50 next change.
I switched to 5w-50 in my 3.4 and oil pressure never below 1.5 bars now.
I also swapped the pressure relief valve (5 minute procedure) - not sure if that helped as well, but removed another variable.
If you have a stethoscope, you may want to use it as it could be one of your pistons has clearance and you could isolate the noise to a specific cylinder using a stethoscope.
Would also help you isolate valve / lifter noise or other areas of noise. idler wheels on belt, alternator bearing, etc. - but the fact the noise disappears at 1800 rpm may make some of these possibilities less...
I would check for the obvious stuff first - exhaust manifold leak, exhaust pipe leak, loose engine or trans mount or something causing an interference "knock" - noises can generate from lots of sources based on my own past experience
I have a slight tick at idle when warm and I went by my Porsche indy recently to ask if he could listen to it and see what he thought. Within a minute or so, while it was running, he unplugged a connector on the left side of the engine bay, kind of high and near the upper intake tube and the coolant reservoir, very easy to get to, and the tick went away. Plugged it back in and it came right back. There is some sort of vaccuum valve that he said can start to go bad intermittently and that was it. I havent even fixed it yet, he said it was no big deal, will replace next time I send it in for something. Just a thought.
Thanks. I pulled the plugs and boroscoped the cylinders and as best as I can see everythig looks clean. I reinstalled the plugs and there was no change.
