Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace imsb' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check engine' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So, my fourth Porsche. Always wanted a 911. Found this low mileage example(25k) online in Vegas. Flying out next Thursday to take delivery and drive back to OKC. Not a lot of service records unless I find them in the glove box. Whatever it needs itll get. I just hope its not something that will require too much time or money. I can do some basic stuff with the help of this forum and YouTube. Any mods that you guys consider a must? Its a 2003 C4S. Assuming its what I think it is Ill have it for several years. No track days or hard charging (Im too old), just the occasional spirited jaunt around town and the occasional weekend away. I found the forum through my brother. He was in sales at Porsche North Houston for a few months in 2019. Said there was a salesman there who contributed to the board regularly. Ive read quite a bit and am trying to soak it up. Ill admit a lot of its out of my skill range, but I still love to read. Kind of reminds me of the DML (Ducati Monster List) I used to frequent. We were passionate, just like you guys. But it sold to a Canadian developer and lots its soul. I hope that doesnt happen here. Glad to be here.
Thanks! Can’t wait to take delivery. I would put a signature line with previous and current cars but can’t figure out how to do it. Just happy you can see my post!
Love your silver 996. All my trucks as well as my Cayenne and Panamera are/were silver. I stayed away from black for a while because it’s so hard to keep clean.
Super fun! It looks great. Low mileage = higher risk of engine troubles. Please get it checked out thoroughly for peace of mind if nothing else. For me, the minimum is boroscope cylinders from the inside, fuel injector test or replacement, IMSB replacement, crankcase vacuum level check. Lot's of vids for learning on the boards. Don't let them scare you. But be informed.
You will be addicted to this car shortly. Welcome to the madness!
I HIGHLY suggest you get the engine checked out. Checked for bore scoring and if there's any metal flakes in the oil. If you don't, this purchase has a higher probability of becoming a bad financial decision for you. It's happened many times on this forum already. You can find many of the threads posted in this sub forum. There's at least one member who was driving home after purchasing his car and didn't make it home before the engine blew up and left him stranded.
The lower mileage isn't necessarily a plus in the 996 world when it comes to the engine. Also, be aware that having the IMS bearing changed on an automatic 996 is more expensive than manual transmission cars.
Good luck on the purchase, but make sure you have it checked out!
Thanks for the good advice everyone. Assuming I make it back to OKC she’ll be gone through thoroughly at Porsche OKC. Daniel (former tech now service writer) has always given me solid advice and taken good care of my cars. I’ll keep the board posted with the results 👍🏽
Really beautiful car, with a lot of options!!
I would start doing all the preventing maintenance before any mod (it would take quite amount of money doing it right). After that, a good point to start is the suspension getting ride of the US setup and going for the RoW or any other setup you like.
Beautiful example and welcome to the madness! As other pointed out, check the engine. Lower mileage examples can be the risky ones and cost you. C4S Tip was one of the more common IMS failure models from what I read so worth addressing that if it hasn't been. I seriously hope you drive the car a lot more than 1500 miles / year as they're such a blast!
Where did you get that data? IMHO, IMS bearing failure is no respecter of transmission choice, but rather, failure is more or less common with the type of bearing in the car. In this case, the 2003 C4S has the highest probability of IMS bearing failure because it has the small single row 6204 bearing. That bearing did not have the proper load capacity in this application. Other factors play into this equation, but load is what kills these bearings. This has been proven with the more robust 6305 "M97" bearing is later M9X cars.
Gorgeous car!
But the folks here are right...all kinds of excuses to not have this car. You should probably just put it on a truck and send it to Central PA. Ill watch it for you....
Thanks for all the comments and advice guys. Much appreciated! I’ve got a nice list of checks and services to start. Just can’t wait to get her home. So thankful for this community 😎
MattieK,
love the silver cars. Drive a silver Raptor for a daily now. Third silver truck in the last 5 years. My Cayenne is silver. And my wife’s Panamera was silver (totaled now)
ECU Doctors can flash your ECU to ROW. Not sure what all it entails other than a ROW ECU ignores the secondary air injection system and errors. And no, re-mapping the ECU/DME is not readily available, and you can really screw something up to include a new ECU/DME, immobilizer, new key fobs. Were talking thousands of dollars. Professional work only.
Wow! That’s a beautiful model and color combination! Best of luck to you on your driving adventure.
I hope you have a safe trip back and a great time doing it 🍻
What do you guys think?[/QUOTE]
What do I think? I think you have too many toys in that garage.
I'm jealous!
Seriously, I'm more of a stock kind of guy... I prefer the original factory BBS Turbo Twists that come on the C4S. But the others would look cool too.
The wheels are look great. Stock Textar pad debris will burn into the deep dish wheel clearcoat on aggressive driving. I had snow/ice buildup on the inner wheel before and though my car was having major driveline issues (vibrations) until I saw what was happening. Still they are a great set of quality lightweight wheels.
Trip was good until we left Albuquerque Saturday morning. I-40 is a horrible road. Poor surface conditions for majority of the 600 miles. Nothing but trucks with governors. They would inevitably wait until I was close and then cut me off to pass another truck, and take ten miles to do it! Add 60-80 mph cross winds and I was wishing I had had it shipped.
On the bright side it did give me a chance to get some seat time, and we checked out the Hoover dam. My 12 year old daughter had a good time. And that was what I focused on to stay positive 😎
Beautiful and hope you have enjoyed it this last month.
What is the interior color? Looks darker than natural brown in the dealer pics... either way its gorgeous!
Sorry its taken so long to respond. The local dealership totaled the Cayman. Wifey was pretty upset. Still have the C4S.
My overall opinion when comparing the two cars, 03 C4S vs 17 Cayman, is that the Cayman is easier to drive, but not as satisfying. C4S feels more like a muscle car, and sounds much better. Cayman handles better. The 987 I picked up a couple of years ago sounds better than both. That 3.4 sings!
Still have the C4S. She runs and drives beautifully. Replaced the IMSB with the LN version right away. It was clean as a whistle. Other items addressed: coils and plugs, motor mounts, transmission mount, new suspension, ignition switch, PCCM+ installed, trunk and frunk struts, light switch, tires, motorsports AOS, Driven oil, brake fluid refresh, reverse light switch, light savers, window regulators, upper and lower idler pulleys, and power steering fluid, paint correction, ceramic coating and PPF.
Shes been a great car 😎
