If you recommissioning a car after 12 years, I would consider changing all fluids, and pulling the sump to see what is in there.

I'm not a P-wrencher but if you think it might have been 12 years since the last oil change, I would run it for 2K miles and then take another look.

Suggestion

That being said, if your goal is to assess the vehicle to determine if it is worth saving, I would dump the existing old oil, through a mesh filter to look for anything undesirable (I do this every oil change and just use sink strainers from the dollar store in a big funnel as I empty the oil.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Guys did my first oil change on the 996 today. I know for fact this vehicle has been standing and not used for the last 12 years I don't know when the oil was last changed certainly not for the last 12 years and I don't know how long before that. Anyway there was some particles in the filter I don't think its metal they look like plastic but when you touch them I they feel like paper I've attached some photos. Any help would be great.

POST 2Original post

I'm not a P-wrencher but if you think it might have been 12 years since the last oil change, I would run it for 2K miles and then take another look. Also - have an oil analysis done at the same time.

POST 3Original post

If you recommissioning a car after 12 years, I would consider changing all fluids, and pulling the sump to see what is in there. I would also change water pump/thermostat Coils, Spark plugs. If not updated, these may cause a bunch of gremlins pointing to bigger issues. That being said, if your goal is to assess the vehicle to determine if it is worth saving, I would dump the existing old oil, through a mesh filter to look for anything undesirable (I do this every oil change and just use sink strainers from the dollar store in a big funnel as I empty the oil. Put in new oil and see what happens. I've done this with other cars. I wouldn't do it on a 996 because if there is something minor with the engine this may exacerbate the issue. M96 engines are very expensive. And then there is the question: Why did the car sit for 12 years? Forgotten? or was there something wrong?
