I ended up replacing the headlight switch and it fixed the instrument and license plate lights.

Everything lit up on my gauge cluster, including needles after I installed a new headlight switch.

Same EXACT issue for my 2002 996 TT and I did the same thing; got replacement cluster and replaced the guage and the needle was still dark.

Also they are super inexpensive, so I just replaced all of mine when I was in there.

I did contact a VDO repair shop, but they said they did not handle this type of issue.

Suggestion
I would really like to find a Vado shop I can send my cluster too, to replace my led lights with a warm or brighter white lighting that will still work on my dimmer switch.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Driving last night I realized my needle for the oil pressure gauge was not lit up. One of the LEDs must be burned out. Is this common? What are solutions? Can the gauge be purchased separately or can the LED be replaced? Thanks.
WOW..just wow! First post and only post. Did you even try to run a search before posting? Maybe even a Google search? BTW, earlier models have bulbs in the gauge cluster, later models have a mix of LED's and bulbs. So it is always important on car forums to post the model and year of your car. Kinda makes sense because our 996's now span around a 22 year model run with a lot of changes made over the years. Get it? We are not psychic and do not know you or your car. Thanks and Merry Christmas.
Thanks for your considerate reply. I am sure this kind of response will want people to be part of your group. Just to confirm, I am relatively new to this board, I joined about 3 months ago and made some posts. I purchased a new computer a few days ago and now this site thinks I just had this one post. I did forget to list the car, I apologize. 2003 Carrera Cabriolet 2wd. I did search the web and this site. Information was a few years old and I was hoping that some new options were available. Yes, I have found the directions to remove the dash and remove gauges to get to the LED. But I did not find any information as to which bulb to get for replacement. Plus I was hoping someone would say that the gauge can be purchased separately. Although I doubt it is. So, does anyone know which bulb to order from Superbrightlights?
I would like to mention that this site has been very useful to this first time Porsche owner.
Edit:
This is an early cluster 996.1, later clusters seem to have LED which are not replaceable.
I was wrong they are the 1.5 w bulbs brown base.

^^^^ This! Change all the bulbs at one time. Brightness changes as the filaments wear.
Oh! And welcome to the group. This site has any detail you need to fix anything. The search is a bit clunky, I rarely use it. I find it's much faster to find something on this site using Google search. The cabriolet's are awesome! Mine is a 2002 C2 Cab.
The picture of the rear of the instrument cluster might be an older year than my 2003. But I decided to remove the cluster and see what lights are in it. Well, the plastic around my three connectors is disintegrating as I try to pull them out. I did unsnap the hold down levers, but the plug refuses to release. So now I have another issue, can I get replacement plugs for the instrument cluster? My were probably destroyed by lots of exposure to the sun.
@hbdunn
, is that a 996.1 or 996.2 gauge cluster?
I have the same problem ar OP and I thought the 996.2 only had LEDs.
I also googled for an answer and couldn't find a 996.2 specific answer.
The LEDs can be replaced and I have the directions for doing that. What I need is the correct LED to replace what is there now. Although I was hoping to find a replacement oil pressure gauge so I would not have to do the delicate soldering.
Update to thread - purchased a used instrument cluster and removed oil pressure gauge. Put replacement gauge in my instrument cluster. Did not solve issue. The needle still does not light up when light switch is turned on. Does any one have an idea how the needles are lit up? Is my only solution a new instrument cluster? I did contact a VDO repair shop, but they said they did not handle this type of issue. (forget name right now)
Sorry for the late reply. Before you replaced your headlight switch, what instrument lights were not working? I just have the one needle not lit. Thanks.
Actually when I first got the car, I did not ave dash lights and installing a new headlight switch did solve that problem except for the one needle. So I doubt another switch would solve the problem. So, I still have the question, how are the needles lit?
Ric,
Same EXACT issue for my 2002 996 TT and I did the same thing; got replacement cluster and replaced the guage and the needle was still dark. I can't yet find a replacement console and don't want the hassle of having someone reprogram the mileage etc.
I 'toyed' with the idea of painting the needle with 'glow in the dark' paint
For now I will live with it but something somewhere is amiss beyond what people seem to be able to repair....
I too have a 2003 996.2 cabriolet with the gray faces and factory orange instrument lighting. Especially with the top down and nice weather, , I can’t see most of what my instruments are reading. I would really like to find a Vado shop I can send my cluster too, to replace my led lights with a warm or brighter white lighting that will still work on my dimmer switch. I’m in the middle of Dallas & Ft. Worth. I’ve called a few places on west coast and haven’t found anyone that will/can do this job right as yet. Any ideas would be appreciated. I’m 81 and my hand isn’t as steady for small soldering as it used to be. Thanks if you can help.
I sent a message to repair and they sent back they only work on older VDO gauge so Im still looking for a place I can send my whole cluster to put in bright white leds.
