Suggestion
I don't worry much about the seats, the passenger side gets very little use anyway.
Leading evidence: 'Use anyway' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). I get annoyed with people closing the car door using the glass window instead of the actual door.

Oh and the passenger that uses the storage area in the door under the arm rest flap as a trash can.

The only kind I haven't run into yet is the passenger that wants to use the window as a grab bar and use it to pull his (or her) body up and out of the seat.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I don't have a garage queen (I drive year round in Iowa) but it makes me insane that everyone plops into the passenger seat from about three feet in the air. I'm 6'2" and 215 lbs and somehow I'm able to gently lower myself into the drivers seat. What's up with the semi-controlled fall that everyone else seems to do to get into the passenger seat? They turn 90 to the seat and just let gravity take over. Does this happen to you? Do you teach them how to get into the car? Is that even possible without sounding like a douche? My poor passenger seat...
Grant
Yes I know what you mean; I have no problem getting in without excessive seat wear. But what about door slammers, seems like everyone is trying to knock the doors off the hinges.
My hypothesis:
Ladies enter that way because they don't want to do a beaver shot when getting in a car. Men do it because they do not realized how far down it is to the seat compared to other cars. Also, neither sex is paying for the car or its maintenance so they are simply ignorant of any reason NOT to get it that way. They probably do it in their own cars when they are passengers there, as well.
I have no problem with "ploppers", but I worry more about the people who PULL the door open without waiting for the window to retract! I'd take the old style A frame doors any day!
Plop on the edge of that carbon fiber and get a hell of a shot to your tailbone.... thats what I tell em'
That said I had a passenger (large) slide his backside all the way dwon the bolster and it sounded like the seat was destroyed!! I almost blew a gasket - from then on I just tell people they wouldnt like the car and really there is no need to take mine... its not a Cadilac
- its rough, noisy, uncomfortable and a biatch to get in, impossible to get out of............
Know what you mean, but I don't say anything. Grit my teeth, bite my tongue and keep quiet.
The seat ploppers.
The people that carry large leather bags that scrape the door insides.
The ones that drag their shoes on the passenger door sill.
The door slammers.
And the ones that leave finger and hand prints -- one Porsche is lapis blue -- all over the passenger door around the handle.
The only kind I haven't run into yet is the passenger that wants to use the window as a grab bar and use it to pull his (or her) body up and out of the seat.
Oh and the passenger that uses the storage area in the door under the arm rest flap as a trash can. Apple core (I didn't see her even eating an apple when she got in.) Fingernail polish bottle. Tissue. Sigh.
Sincerely,
Macster.
And then there is the guy who gets into your car, and then wants to cross his legs with the tip of his shoe scraping your lower dash. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!! My brother-in-law insists on doing this in every car he get into as a passenger. GRRRRRRRR!!!!!!
I have a friend, who get's into the passenger seat, and sets it upright, and moves the seat forward until his feet are against the firewall, like he's driving, I told don't touch my seat controls, and when I bought the P-car, he starts playing with all the buttoms, windows, sunroof, radio everything like a little kid.
I told him, don't play with anything, he drives a basic Toyota Echo, very basic, no pwer windows, no power locks, no air condition, etc.
Hah, Lotus guy reminds me of when I had to take my dad to physical therapy in my 924S. His car was in the shop and Mom was out of town so it was my car or no car.
There is nothing quite as funny as a 6'3" 320lb 60 year old man with a semi-rigid leg brace trying to get into a 924. He had to sit on the seat, twist so he could get his head under, then slide over the console onto the driver's seat and then stuff his leg into the footwell and shimmy back over to the passenger's seat.
I was dying lying but there was nothing for me to do but watch.
To get out he just fell out of the seat and called it a day.
I'm 6'4", about 220lbs and I've gotten into a Lotus Exige before (successfully, without ripping anything). I wouldn't have really been able to drive it... but I got in!
As you are walking out to the car explain to them how Porsche has installed the airbag sensors inside the seat so he might want to kinda just slide easily into the seat rather than plop down.
Just say they need this for the side airbags and those crazy Germans always seem to be over engineering things. I bet he slides in easy from now on.
how about the passenger when unbuckling the seat belt lets go of the end and lets it fly, hits the glass then bounces of who knows what then upon exit slams the fu**ing door. grrr!!!!
have tried to get my point across, open the door for her and close it the way I do but just does not get it.
This thread is great, I thought I was the only AR! I don't invite many passengers specifically for the reasons that others have stated. When I do, I either help them get in and out or show them the areas (side bolsters/inner sills) that are prone to wear. It's all in your delivery, just ask nicely and they will oblige.
YES agree with what is said here, I am also very careful with the seat bolster wear area. So far only my wife is seating in the passenger seat and I do help her in and out of the car too... So far so good
Cheers,
LOL
This has been a good post...I don't feel so bad knowing there are others with emotional attachment to their Porsche. Seriously, I lived in a low income home in an Italian neighborhood in Pittsburgh PA. No one had any money so we took very good care of what we had. Planning to put a half million miles on my 2002 911, shes a keeper.
I read any article in the Porsche Excellence magazine about a guy putting over 300,000 on a 1960s 911. He kept it in original condition and had mechanic did airplane maintenance on it. After he died he left the Porsche 911 to his mechanic, who had never own a Porsche.
Chris
If this disturbs you so much, you need to take the time to prebrief your pax so that they know how to do this to your satisfaction. Take a little time with them and the next time you may only have to give a small reminder.
Agree with this approach. I've got Euro GT3 seats in my C4S, so getting in and out is no small feat. I brief the pax before even opening the door and then help him/her get in (I help the hers more than the hims).
Door slamming is still a problem!
If that guy in the Lotus is too stupid to figure out he should move the seat back, then yeah...I think he's too stupid to be out on the track.
I don't worry much about the seats, the passenger side gets very little use anyway. The door slammers are bad though.
Door slammers:
Problem with the people-who-just-don't-think passengers is that they don't take the time to realize that another door, window, or sunroof being open will result in a lack of seal which will make the door they're closing close extra hard.
Maybe it's just the **** engineer in me, but come on, if I see that the car is not sealed then I will make a point to close the door more gently.
Am I in the minority in this world for actually looking around at my environment and analyzing it and acting on what I find??!
There should be a mandatory video that passengers must watch before driving in your car. The ones like when you go on a commercial airline flight, but it has to take place before the person gets in the car.
Covering all the major topics mentioned - no 275 lb. dead weight drops when landing in the seat, closing the door in a normal manner. No playing with the window controls, no questions on "How fast have you had it up to" and the like. Also tell them they are sitting in an emergency exit row, and are they willing to take the responsibilities of sitting in that row :-)
Don't touch any buttons - but the seatbelt on, and shut up! LOL.
I haven't yet had any problems with people abusing my seats. But what really bothers me is people that close the door by pushing the glass, instead of the door. Am I being unreasonable, or is this something I should be worried about?
I've instructed my kids and fellow passangers to never touch the glass or door from the outside to close the door
They are to only to use the door handle.
John
This absolutely goes through me as well.
When I see this happen, I can see and feel the side
window bending.
I always advise my passengers (very few of them) that the
window is fragile and will break if used to close the door.
Now you have to make sure your passenger doesn't gouge
their grungy finger nails into the paint on the door handle
when closing it or scratch the door with their 30 year old
ruby high school ring.
