Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
If your front drains, in the pan under the battery, are clogged rain can fill the pan to the point where it can be pulled into the engine through the brake booster vent.
Leading evidence: 'Replace however, i filed an insurance claim and the engine' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Okay I really won't, but I wonder how insurance companies handle a claim like this because it seems too easy to intentionally set the car up for engine failure.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

we have a 996 that has less than 25K miles. it's been my daily driver for the past 3 months after being a garaged "toy" for the previous 5 years.
it was parked at the airport for the past 10 days and when i got in tonite, when i went to start it, it was hesitant to start, gave a large backfire noise and then caught. (we had some pretty heavy rain the past couple of days.) there was acceleration, but not as powerful as usual. halfway home, the check engine light came on, then the coolant warning light came on. i let it rest for about an hour and when i went to turn it on again, nothing happened. i'm calling my mechanic in the morning, but just wanted some moral support as i envision the worst for my "baby."
do you have access to a durametric scanner? You may want to post this over at renntech.com and see if there's a durametric or Porsche diagnostic scanner in your area that can help.
btw when you went to restart the car - what happened? did it turn over? Are there lights?
Strange as this sounds you might have sucked water into the engine through the brake booster. If your front drains, in the pan under the battery, are clogged rain can fill the pan to the point where it can be pulled into the engine through the brake booster vent. If "the large backfire noise" was a cylinder "D" chunking you might have created some real engine problems.
If you could define "nothing" a little better we might have more info to share???
Please let us know what the diagnosis is.
Mine was hesitant to start a couple weeks ago, the day after washing it.
I waited a couple minutes, and then she fired right up again as normal, no other symptom since....
Okay, that's my encouragement for ya! Let us know.
I concur with the idea that water could have been sucked into the engine through the brake booster because...thats exactly what happened to me. It hydrolocked and ruined my engine
However, I filed an insurance claim and the engine was replaced for free. That's the good news for you.
Have you been keeping up with clearing the drains in the battery area? You don't mention the year of your 996 but the early ones (first couple to three years) have an issue with water collection in the battery area being sucked into the brake booster--and the rest is history. (See a couple of the above posts).
Anyone have a photo of the drains in question? I would hate to have a similar problem, especially since fall is here and leaves can cause clogged drains!
Next thunderstorm I'm packing my drains solid with leaves. New engine for the cost of an insurance deductible? Yes please.
Okay I really won't, but I wonder how insurance companies handle a claim like this because it seems too easy to intentionally set the car up for engine failure.
Of course, now that I've made this post if it ever happened to me I'm sure Progressive would hit me for insurance fraud.
Andy,
Look at your drains and make sure they have been upgraded. The newer one have less propensity to clog completely. Also check to make sure your car has been upgraded with the clear VIN window. I added after hear sloshing on my way home one afternoon. a single leaf had blocked the drain.
Your story sounds way too familair to me. I truly hope that your result is not the same as mine! Mine did bsaically the same thing, misfired and then started. Ran rough, then died and would not start again. The reason it would not start again was that the cylinder wall had cracked and let coolant in and the motor was hydrolocked. Like I said, I TRULY hope this is not your problem.
Frankly, I'm very surprised that any insurance company would pay that claim. If I were an insurance guy I would chalk it up to inadequate maintenance. Part of the routine maintenance on those cars is a thorough inspection of those drains. I would complain to your service department. Is it a Porsche dealer, or an independent which doesn't see a lot of early 996s? It's just a well known issue on the early 996 and 986 (Boxster) cars. --Clearly not THAT well known!
DING...DING...DING. Sadly, we have a winner.
vehicle is now at the dealership being "evaluated" as to whether they will do anything but i'm not holding my breath. 25K miles and this. what a joke.
