POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought my first 911 a couple of weeks ago, but am late posting it. I have been seriously researching 996’s, studying the market, drove alot of cars and read all the forums for over a year. Sold my 968 about 6 months ago. (Once you sell previous car and have $$ in hand, it is very hard not to pull the trigger on a car that ‘almost’ fits your criteria) I felt that pricing had bottomed out and I’ve waited long enough, so I decide to go to LA and look at 5 cars that all happen to be in the northern LA area. I've already done my due diligence- Carfax, research on internet, talk to owners, and mechanics, …. So a few Mondays ago, I ask my wife to make reservations for us to fly to LA on Weds. Hopefully we would drive back rather than fly. Long story – short. We arrive in LA, deal with rental car and traffic, test drive the cars, and decide by 6 pm on one. By 7pm I am a new owner driving my dream. Thursday we fully enjoy PCH, Malibu, canyon drives and California coast in general. Dream day in dream car. (see pics) Friday we pack up early to beat the traffic and head towards LV. Some close calls on the road, but Escort worked great. Wife loves the car, insists on driving at least 30% of time. Get into LV ~11am. Eat lunch and see new casinos. Eventually leave and head towards Grand Junction, CO. Arrive in GJ around 8pm. Leave early Saturday and am looking forward to the next few hours of scenery and roads. Rumors of bad weather in the passes but I figure how bad could it be. But the roads had been plowed and salted and no problem. (A week later they got 3 ft. of snow!) Made great time going through boring Kansas. Pull into driveway at 7:45pm. ~1700 miles in 2 days. Avg speed ~80, and ~27mpg. We both enjoyed the way the car eats up miles. We were very relaxed and rested when we stopped at our destinations. The Fabspeed exhaust has a sweetspot ~ 3k and you don’t hear it much on the highway, versus the aggressive growl around town. The M030 and 19” tires rode much better than expected. What a combo. Far far better than my 968 with 16”s. The 996 has 2 personalities. Flat out blast to drive through the canyons, and pleasant GT drive on the highway. Sunday-I got together with local Porsche group and went on a fantastic drive. Lots of 3 digits. Absolutely love the car. Previous owner was great to work with as was his mechanic. Car has nearly all the options I wanted. And I paid way less, for more than I ever dreamed of, when I first started looking at 996s a year ago. Yes- I still go in the garage and sit in the car and have to pinch myself. POST 4Original post

Congrats! The best way to enjoy these cars is to DRIVE them, and between the PCH and the Nevada desert you did well! Did you look into why the front end was converted to the newer design lights/bumper etc.?

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 7080047

???, Front end seems to be a MK1, however, the wing seems to be MK2. I like the MK2 wing a little better then the "flying taco" MK1 wing I have. Car looks great, Congratulations. ________________________________________________________________ Schwabische Auto / 2001 C4 Coupe - Aerokit, 6 speed / 2008 BMW ///M3 E93

POST 8Original post

Great story about your 996 ride home, nice way to get to know your new Porsche. Looks nice in your pics. How many miles on your C2?

POST 9Original post

great looking car!!! a great car-buying story too, congrats

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks! The front signals are tinted and they blend into the black. Wasn't sure if I liked the Mk2 rear spoiler from the pics. But it is really growing on me in person. I also have a MK1 spoiler and have to decide which I like most. The trip was not without it's challenge. Like the 10 min Walmart stop which turned into an hour after the oil filler pipe broke when I topped up the oil. Luckily, duct tape temporarily mended the pipe so we could continue. The car had ~94k when I picked it up - now 98k. Car looks better than 50k ones I looked at. Appreciate this site- sure made making the decision to get the 996 much easier. Thanks everyone! JimB

POST 12Original post

Oh I get it, I like the look of the tinted signals, fooled me on the blackberry, I can see it a little better now on the computer screen but it still looks very slick. Sorry if i worried you by being affirmative about it before! Again, beautiful car. Black ages well, not that I'm at all prejudiced in my position! The wing is great, the wheels look good, and the tint, the whole look is very updated. I hope your winter so far in KC is as mild as we've had back east, so you can do some driving! Best, Hans

POST 13Original post

mind sharing on the prices of the car? beautiful car btw....

POST 14Original post

Hello, Congrats for your new car have fun with it. But remember that you need to update your car and give good maintenance for better performance... Regards, Olivia DMV Traffic School

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

$17.5 Yes, planned winter projects... mostly change fluids - transmission, brake, coolant. I just replaced the oil filler tube that broke at the Walmart in Utah. REAL fun removing and replacing the 2 bolts that hold it on. Had to remove the alternator, which gave me opportunity to check all the 'belt' items. Might replace water pump just as precaution and one idler has some play. And oh yeah- I need to replace a front wheel bearing. A little noisy. Will do both. On the fence about upgrading the IMS. The RMS doesn't leak. Original engine. Well maintained car. I chose a higher mileage car because, "if it made it this far, it was one of the better built engines". Plus I know from experience, one of the worst things for cars are for them to sit. This car has the miles pretty well spread out, with the PO driving it 30k in the last 2 years. I will use it as a 70% DD. (in my mind, a 10 year old 30k garage queen is worse that an driven 90k car with good records) I am considering upgrading the stereo, but probably won't get to it til Spring time.

POST 19Original post

The taco wing is worth more than the MKII wing out in the market... Beautiful car! welcome.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7082443

Yes, I agree the taco is the preferred wing! I think it had an effect on this car (and others I looked at) being up for sale for quite a while. I have a Taco which I'm painting this weekend and installing. We will see.

POST 21Original post

Nice car, very very good price. When you sell the MK2 wing you can easily find an OEM front bumper or side skirts for the same money. It is hard to tell in pucs if your car already has the areo front bumper

POST 22Original post

Sweet!! I think you might be right about well used cars. My daily driver MY2000 996 has 95,000+ miles on it and s absolutely the best running, most reliable car I've ever owned. It's dry as a bone, smooth as silk, and feels as powerful as the day I bought it three years and 60,000 miles ago. I have to say that I really like the look of the 19's on your car and you seem to say it drives well. Maybe I'll consider a set myself.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 7083416, 7084291

The car has the Aero bumper and skirts. As luck would have it, I stumbled across the Taco just as I was ready to pull the trigger on the cars with the other spoilers, and it eased my purchase. Based on my experience, I'd consider the 19"s. The 2 concerns I had was ride and cost of tires. I test drove a couple of 996's with 18's and stock suspension, and this car with 19's and the M030 suspension was MUCH better. Price wise- the PO put Vredestein tires on the car about 3k miles before I bought it. I have been really impressed with them and the rears were $178 ea! (on-line) Now even with 7k they still look relatively new. Great grip, no noise, and was even good in the 2" of snow in the Rockies. They were highly rated in Car & Driver tests (I have some 17"s that I will swap for the winter, just because they are much narrower and I might as well wear them out since they are at 50%) It will be interesting to see the difference in traction and weight of the tire/rims. The 19" rears are 50lb, 17's are 43lb.

POST 24Original post

Hey Jim, Nice looking car! Congratulations and welcome to the forum! Rudy

POST 25Original post

Welcome! Reminds me of my buying experience. I bought a '99 in '03, flew into Houston, looked over the car, handed over a check and had a wonderful drive home to Salt Lake City. Hit 155 mph and would have gone faster had it not been for my protesting wife. Still have both, the car behaves beautifully, the wife still bitches;-)

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 7087037

I've endured the same, particularly during group drives with other P-cars (my wife doesn't get that you need to keep up...) The short term solution was to not bring her along... But I sense a business opportunity here... would anyone (for the low, low price of $4.99) buy a custom fit privacy screen for the speedometer digital display??? Not unlike those screens you buy for your laptop that limits the viewing angle to only the user... Just a thought... Rudy
