Reported cause
We were replacing my window regulator last summer, and when we had the door apart, I remember him commenting about a common door rattle problem that always turned out to be a speaker screw.
Leading evidence: 'speaker screw' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'speaker screw' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace when you put the door panel back' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I had a noise from one door, and it turned out to be the trim on the inside curved handle.

I read the direction from the manual and they say there are two fastners that must be replaced when you put the door panel back on.

The tech also mentioned that he secured the screw in the passenger door when he replaced the window regulator.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've got two rattling noises that are irritating me. I did a search and found a thread on the 996 GT3 forum that was heavy on complaining and lite on solutions.
1) Driver's side door rattles -- mainly while idling at stop lights. Stops when I put my elbow against the door.
2) Shifter buzzes. Happens occasionally. Stops when I press my hand on the leather at the base of the shifter.
I can see that the PO had various rattles handled under warranty by the dealer. At this point, I would like to minimize expenditure and would love to hear about some DIY solutions. Suggestions?
I am contemplating taking the door apart, looking for loose bits, tightening them, and reassembling. I noticed that the dealer in my records used felt to deaden some noises. Any ideas on what kind of material they were using?
At some point, I know I'm going to need to do the passenger side door because it's not dropping the full distance (still drops enough) and I think I've got the "streak" issue when raising/lowering the window.
A common rattle problem (from what my mechanic told me) is that the screws that hold in the door speakers work their way out and cause door rattles. Once you remove the door panel, check that out first.
No problem. We were replacing my window regulator last summer, and when we had the door apart, I remember him commenting about a common door rattle problem that always turned out to be a speaker screw. Hope that it for you guys!
I think that is pretty rude of you to call his wife an airbag, but that....... oh wait........ you were talking about the one in the door!
Uhmmm..... never mind!!!
- my wife does not like being called and air bag and told me to tell you so.
I think there are some articles on door de-trimming at renntech that I was planning on following. Is there something special required to deactivate the airbag?
Oh wait, sorry Tim, I didn't mean to call yo' mama an airbag.
I found one of the sources of buzzing. There was about $2 in change in the area just forward of the shift assembly under the airbag sensor. Unfortunately some of it was too far forward to retrieve -- even with a straw with duct tape on the end. Still, hopefully this will remove one of my rattles.
The tech also mentioned that he secured the screw in the passenger door when he replaced the window regulator. Guess that just leaves the buzz in the driver's side door.
Not too bad!
Man, I can't believe Im late with the yo mamma insults... now it's just too late for a come-back... esp after all of the job talk.
I hope you found some gainful employment Tim.
Zroadhouse, so whats the plan with the driver's door -- mine is driving me crazy!!
No kidding about that. I lost my job about a year ago and I am still looking in my engineering field. I figure I have to the end of summer (maybe) then its game over for me. I even took a job in a warehouse just to have some money coming in. Talk about a pay cut!
I have lost count how many resumes I sent out. Still have my C4 but only because I can not find local buyer.
I know how you feel and I wish you the best.
RAC,
Man, over a year? That really sucks! Have you checked out the

Just a thought on door rattle. I had a noise from one door, and it turned out to be the trim on the inside curved handle. When I squeezed it it went away. If you are lucky enough that this is all it is, then a piece of rubber (I use blown road bike inner tubes) or black felt will fix it.
I have 3 annoying rattles:
Passenger door: Seems to be coming from the
lid to the door map box
(or whatever it's called). When I press down on the lid, it stops. This one drives me INSANE. Will dismantle the lid and some point, if I can figure out how to get it off. (Does anyone know how?)
Rattle in
dashboard panel
adjacent to the passenger side A-pillar. I stuffed a small rubber gasket into the crack and the rattle stopped. A bit unsightly but effective.
Rattle in the area of the shifter turned out to be the
spare change
I keep in the ashtray for parking meters. It starts to rattle occasionally; a short, swift knock on the ashtray lid settles it down.
Rattles in a luxury car are one of my pet peeves and the 996's many plastic interior components don't help.
I believe that the primary issue with the 996 interior is that it's held together with plastic and metal retainer clips (= noisy). What can you do? I've thought about removing some panels and greasing the clips. I love my car but I would totally consider a 997 if I knew that the interior was better assembled.
My passenger side door rattles sporatically. Annoyed the crap out of me. When I drove, sometimes I would hear a slight rattle, other times I would not. Finally opened up the passenger door and found that one of the speaker screws was halfway out. I tightend the screw and problem solved.
At least I know exactly what to fix once my driver side starts to rattle.
When removing the door panel are there any fasteners that have to be replaced? I read the direction from the manual and they say there are two fastners that must be replaced when you put the door panel back on.
I think I have the spreaker screw rattle. Sound like a washer spinning around a screw.
i have a new and first rattle in mine. sounds like its coming from the center console but seems to stop when someone is in the passenger seat...driving me crazy!
