Started with a $250 XR350 dirtbike that I bought , cleaned, got running and sold for $850.

Sold all of them but 2 and used the money for track stuff.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I know that we are all car lovers but also have a life outside of it. What are some of your other interests?
I know some of us love photography because we were privileged to see some of the pictures. It can be a sport, unusual hobby, raising the next Tiger Woods or Yo Yo Ma.
I'll start. Tennis is my obsession as well as traveling.
Detailing. I'm fortunate enough to have a hobby that actually generates income for me to pay for my automotive habits.
Used to be into watches but that hobby got a bit rediculous. Sold all of them but 2 and used the money for track stuff.
Andy
Dont have much time...work..house..family but I am plenty happy with the car hobby and just spending as much time with my 2 Year old daugher as I can... oh and also the" wife" and my 2 German Shorthaired Pointers
Try and read a good book now and than as well
oh and and cycling!
Still an avid watch collector - filled three 12 slot watch cases, plus several others laying around...
Let's see - I moonlight as a high school varsity football coach, powerlifting (more coaching than lifting these days, getting way too old to do more than one meet a year), on occasion I help out some of my buddies as a substitute martial arts instructor (too many interests to take on my own students - FMA, sticks and edged weapons), slow-pitch softball (co-ed grabass team at work), beach volleyball (this is So Cal...) SCUBA diving (CA waters are way too cold to go too often), and poker with college buddies (not the real kind, the kind where you have to have a white board to keep track of all the wild cards...)
Detailing is my latest pursuit - just to do my own cars... not planning on going pro or anything, but I do find satisfaction in a job well-done and detailing seems like a good way to indulge... I've got a brand new PC and I'm not afraid to use it (on either of my trucks...)

My favorite hobby used to be buying/riding/selling motorcycles and cars for profit & fun. That's how I worked my way up to a Porsche. Started with a $250 XR350 dirtbike that I bought , cleaned, got running and sold for $850. Unfortunately once I got the Porsche my ROI started to drop significantly.
I have gone thru 50 bikes and several cars in the past 4 years though. Motocross is my favorite, but streetbikes are fun too.
Good question . . . I am spread too thin (money wise) to call any of them obsessions. Years ago I was a high-end stereo freak. Tube amp, electrostatic speakers, etc. But the fun kind of went out of that--it got so that I never listed to a full song! Just play a part, tweak the room acoustics or speaker placement, listen to a little more...
Then went overboard in photography equipment. Backed off on that but having more fun with lesser (as compared to my film setup) digital equipment.
Had a nice horse (hunter) for a while, which was fun but not fun enough for the expense.
Fly fishing was an obsession for a few years . . . Kept a few rods but sold my Winston bamboo.
A few years ago I got my diving certification, but MN is not exactly the diving capital of the world.
So the P-car. Having fun tweaking, detailing and driving. Not quite enough extra cash to try tracking it yet.
In this respect I envy my wife. She has had one obsession since she was 12--horses.
Chao, where is that port city picture? Looks like Greece, but not with that plateau in the background.
Jon, great pic of your wife riding through the field.
Tornik, cool hobby with antique Montblanc.
Maci, don't know what to tell ya.
I've got a boy turning 7 and a girl turning 3, fun and rewarding as you other parents know.....
We've also got 2 "red ear slider" turtles, they make cool little pets, along with our 2 cats, and yes they all play together, ha.
Back in the early '90s I was obsessed with capturing Iraqi tanks, but there was no future in that.
Now I enjoy my spare time hobby in the aircooled VW world.
Also enjoy a small collection of things like this:
And filling the cabinet with Porsche and VW models like 935s and transporters, primarily 1:43 and some 1:87.....
OK well I am only going to post one of my wierd collections of stuff.
So far I have enjoyed all the posts (except the one... you know)
Here is a pic I just took of "most" of my HO scale electric slot cars I have. Like other collections, some of these are worth quite a bit (say $200) and others less (say $20) I have about 100,000 feet of track so I can drive one to your house if you would like to see it up close
Most of these are from the 60's and 70's All the boxes are original 1968 Hot Wheels 48 car cases... (also collectable at about $50-$100 each)
Also collect Hot Wheels and skateboards.
I enjoy travel and have been to Vietnam, Hawaii (3x), Switzerland, France, Denmark, Canada (many many times) and most of the western 1/2 of the US states, plus a couple on the east coast. (all travel was after I got married 13 years ago) I have 2 boys ages 9 and 10 and they have been with us on all the trips except one to Hawaii (honeymoon)
Skier for 30+ years
Skiing, fly fishing, watches (I have a particular thing for Omega watches... not sure why, they are just my favorite), guitars.
All of these things come after my family... I tend to get into whatever my boys are interested in. This explains why I have been playing the PS3 quite a bit lately...
FPS (First Person Shooter for you older guys not in the know) Gamer. I'm also an avid autocrosser and like to attend DE's when budget allows.
I used to offroad almost every weekend in college with my old jeep but time and budget don't allow me to have 2 car obsessions/hobbies. LOL
Lol - yeah, of course!
Funny thing though... I'm as "guarded" disclosing these hobbies as I am disclosing that I have a p-car... I don't want to get labeled "macho" because I have fun doing these kinds of things any more than I want to be labeled as "rich" because I finally have my dream car; both of which are highly inaccurate, if not incomplete adjectives... and it's interesting how you end up compartmentalizing your life so these pieces of your life stay segregated... for example, none of my martial arts friends know or care about the football thing, anymore than the softball people know or care about the martial arts stuff, or the martial arts guys about my p-car... I guess that's okay, otherwise we'd all be a string of adjectives; teenage mutant ninja turtles... or middle-aged, self-indulgent, naively-in-denial, german-car obsessed nutjobs... (hey, I represent that remark!)
It's all good!
Rudy
Chao, good thread!...lots of cool stuff in here, keep it going guys... for me:
Independent travels (what stands out, Tibet, Nepal (summited Annapurna 2, 7937m, Everest base camp), Africa (summited kilimanjaro, 5200m), Summited Cook mountain in NZ, 3754m). The best part.. me and my wife did it together....
Advanced diving (Bali, Red Sea, Great Barrier, Andaman, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malyasia, Thailand Philippines, South Africa... etc.
Play the bass (currently not in a band), photography and my two boys...
a couple of days before summit Annapurna 2
a couple of days before summit Kili
Wow Red - truly impressive! I used to think I was capable of "roughing it" (sounds like you've taken it to a whole new level), spending time on research ships at-sea, but these days roughing it means staying at a hotel without room service... Your travels fall under the category of "Nice to know someone that has"... because I'm the kinda guy that would much rather read about it...
Rudy
Beyond my obvious hard-core, long-term, deep-seated, irrational exuberance for all things Porsche, there are the Donzi's... and the toy trains... and books...
I have a lot of watches, but I would not considermyself a collector or hobbyist in that area, just a fascination.
My car hobby is far more reaching than my current 996. There have been 16 Porsches before this one. Also a dozen VW's and 40 other cars. There is also a room with no room that houses my diecast collection from one wall to the other, and bookshelves loaded with mostly Porsche books. But there are many other makes there as well.
The current of 6 Donzi's awaits my call in the driveway.
When the heck did they start doing that - I wish someone would have told me!
Redridge - agreed. Sometimes you just need to step into an A-star.
Well north of Whistler on a heli trip:
Today, I skied with a good friend in the white mtns. starting at 9:10 am and finishing at 3:50 pm(last lift to the top). We managed to ski 41,630' vertical feet...we did 28 runs...now it's time to celebrate St. Patricks Day.
I travel a lot for work, and have some great pix - too bad I do not know how to upload them
I really like to party! I also have some watches and collect art. I like guitars too.
Um... I take it that you're a GS/Downhiller, which is great. I just can't drop that many vert so fast.
Personally I'm looking for the bumps all the way down, if I can. Hence the plate!
fountain pens: mostly monte grappa LE's
used to be in love with high end stereo equipment
watches
Ti bicycles
and... this is going to kill me..... and only 20% of the total collection....dont laugh....
John, that shows real maturity to be able to post a pic like that on here and not feel as though your masculinity is threatened in any way
really
(OK I laughed too)
I grew up in France so skiing and cycling are part of growing up... Now in Dallas, I continue to road biking and mountain biking when the weather allows it. Well spring is coming so the biking season will re-start again, that's great. Oh and my wife and I love to travel too...
Oil painting, woodworking, metalworking, building anything in general, archery, edged weapons of almost any kind, generally up to no good.
...well...except when I'm making things for a local hospital to auction off. Zebrawood with gold plated hardware - rollerballs and fountain pens.
Part of a painting I'm working on:
Give me a bow and I'll always find a way to have some fun. Aluminum arrows don't split like the wooden ones in the movies.
Cheers,
Thank you guys for participating in this thread. I was thinking that we probably lead different lives the other day and share this one common passion for a car that has the engine and fuel tank in the wrong place.
It is wonderful that we are able to share our differences as well.
+1... Some measure of comfort knowing that our particular shared pathology isn't limited to a particular demographic... it could happen to anyone... or could it???
Fun thread!
Rudy
I'm clearly not as active as most of the crowd... my hobbies (other than racing porsches) are beer brewing, radio controlled helicopters and airplanes, bee keeping, photography, and a little astronomy.
I love taking road trips...the only problem is that while I love just getting in the car and seeing where I wind up, the navigator in my family (wifely-unit) who also like road trips wants a pre-planned destination. She's just not a spontaneous type...
In the meantime, my other obsessions are movie posters...and (at the risk of receiving massive amounts of ridicule) I've got a few watches...
Styrofoam Spitfire (top of the tail was missing in these pic...)
Bristol Scout (this one has been retired to the garage ceiling):
Last year I got into micro electric helis... the one I got, with the 2 coaxial rotors, is not that difficult to fly - but it certainly does take a bit of practice and dedication. I feel I'm about ready to move up to a single rotor (conventional style) model.
Waddya Do? Flite Instructor (hobby not a profession) and flew a Cirrus 22 today for the first time today...pretty cool plane w/a "glass cockpit" which is totally new to me. Hell, I don't even know how to post pics on this here innernet, and there I was shooting on final....70 knts and having trouble finding the little box for airspeed and another for altitude, in a strange (to me) aeroplane. Cool. Kind of watching that guy here with the Maserati...and feeling the urge. I guess I am a clean and polish guy. Also, I can't help but get a twinge when I see RF5Bpilot's glider....no motor, danceing in the sky, quiet, I don't know but....I feel the need. (I say that and I just yanked my mufflers off to make them louder and more aggressive...Is this bi polar?)
James (aka RF5BPilot ) was kind enough to offer to take my son up for a ride in the glider plane. I have spoke with my son and told him "YES - take him up on it, its the chance of a lifetime!"
I hope the weather starts to improve so we can take him up on the offer, looks like a blast! - My father is an instructor in small planes and I have 1000's of hours riding and several 100 flying but never been in a glider... looks awesome!
This has been a great place to make new friends and expand our horizons (pun intended)
interests & obsessions??? of course raising my 3 kids and their interests & obsessions, coaching baseball, collecting baseball caps, surfing (waves in the ocean), traveling outside of America, martial arts with weapons (sticks, daggers, etc.), but.... my recent favorite thing to do has been finding and patronizing local style pubs with tasty beers. loving allagash curie right now. think its a belgium blond.
Which one? Would "HB in the OC" be Hermosa Beach in Orange County?
Maybe we already know each other - I have Guro rank in three flavors of FMA, train at IMB a couple of times every summer, make it to a Dog Brother's Gathering (at my age, only to watch) once in awhile, and I'm toying with the idea of training for the Cold Steel Challenge in the fall... back in the day, I made some of the hardest rattan training sticks you could find anywhere...
Rudy
Yes - Dan Inosanto is something of a legend... he teaches something he calls Kali Blend... He's also a close friend of my teacher, Narrie Babao... Let me see if I can find something for you in Riverside...
Rudy
Punong Guro!!! (i am bowing with much respect - hope i spelled that right), I need your protection... errr can we be friends! ha I'm in Huntington Beach in the OC originally from Carson. I do know quite a few people who trained at IMB Carson/SouthBay during the earlier Inosanto days. My son and I recently took a sabbatical from training out of Kadan and punong guro Master Ferrer. You and your teacher must know him. He seems to know everyone.
Come to think of it.... i'm pretty sure my sticks are in the backseat of my pcar.
Peace bruddah!
Whoa... easy... I'm no Punong Guro (you spelled it right...), believe me... the certification just means that my teacher or any of the other instructor level guys from my "clans" won't be irritated and come after me (in the biblical sense, if you know what I mean) if I decide to start a school or teach in my teacher's name... nope, I'm pretty much just an enthusiast that might (and that's a big "might") have a few more angles and combos than the next guy... and addicted to the butterflies-in-your-stomach feeling that you get just before a match... I think I've met Master Ferrer at a seminar a few years back - the name is very familiar... Anyway, maybe we'll bump into each other at an event sometime when you're finished resting...
Also - I don't know if we got special dispensation in this thread, but we may get 15 yards for off-topic (I was posting with MedTech when we got spanked for posting about watches)...
Peace!
Rudy
Wow, low key post, but amazing pictures.
Fabulous shots of southern France, what a spectacular region.
And this one from Polynesia, are you kidding me??!!
Don't do bumps(but good for you), but we talked about doing 40k vert after recently doing 30k vert. a couple of weeks ago. We thought it would be an easy task, but I'm still recovering from a great/long ski day on Tuesday, and don't plan on pushing that goal again until next ski season.(I'll be 59 next year). Any way...I did drive my 996 to the slopes again which makes for a complete day of skiing and driving.
