Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

36 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello everyone, I just pick up a used 2001 911 turbo 996. The car has 54,000 miles and is in showroom condition. I am blown away by the performance of the car. The exterior is silver and the interior is black. It is a manual and it is smoking fast. I have one small issue. When I drove it back the car was at sea level in the portland oregon area. I now have it in the mountains at about 5500 feet. I di notice slight dash rattle on the trip home. I took it out yesterday and the dash sounded like the 4th of july. It could have been on smooth parking lot pavement or chip sealed Idaho roads the noise was constant as soon as the tires moved. On my last subaru legacy I put a piece of baker rod between the dash and the windshield. It worked well but I would hate to to that to my new 911. Anyone have any ideas? I did do a search for about an hour on the forum but came up empty. Thanks to all and glad to be in here in this community.

Welcome to the site of the "converted"! Porsche! The is NO substitute!! Pete

POST 3Original post

Welcome - neighbor as for the rattle... drive it... sometimes they go away on their own.... if not you had fun "looking for it" Sign up for some track time to get the "need for speed" out because like you say, its fast... you want to learn to control it AND have a fun a safe time doing so Post pics soon or face the furry of the forum.... I hear Tim walking in the door now.... GL PS if the rattle doesnt stop, swing by Seattle and let me take it out.. maybe I can find it Ed

There is the track in salt lake and a few of the rich guys invited me down. Idaho has some incredible roads and I can enjoy the car without the track. I have a hard time keeping it in the garage but after the wife gave me my walking papers I replaced her with the 911 turbo. The car might cost as much to upkeep as her but it is worth it. You see the car does not talk back and give me a hard time.

POST 5Original post

Welcome and congratulations; however, I beg to differ on your point that you can enjoy your car better on those beautiful roads in Idaho. The track experience is there to help you learn about your abilities as a driver on what your car's potential is. In addition, you will get some useful instruction and be able to learn in a safer environment. You are less likely to have a mishap with disastrous consequences when you are driving those nice curvy roads in Idaho. Enjoy your new ride, post some pics.

POST 6Original post

+1 for that... Spokane has a great track from what I have heard from locals around here.. if you are interested i might be able to send some contact info from one of the guys here that runs over there to drive.. FWIW - the training at the track (even an autocross) are priceless if/when you really need it out on the open road,.... that was the point I was trying to drive home and I am sure all will agree... Enjoy

Hey Ed, what's up? Oh a Newbie! Ahem <Tim clears his throat> Pat, Welcome to Rennlist and Congrats on getting a nice looking Turbo. Oh wait, I think it is a nice looking Turbo, but I can't be sure because there are no pics! It is customary for Newbies to tell us a little about their car and to post pics of it, because we LOVE pics! So consider this next sentence to be your "Newbie Initiation." Come on Newbie, post the !@#$%^&* pics! <Tim whispers so only Pat can hear> The other guys make me do this. I can assure you I get no pleasure out of it, but it is the only way they will let me stay here since my '04 996 "went away" about 10 months ago. <Tim stops whispering> Again, Welcome to Rennlist! You will enjoy this Forum because there are a lot of great guys here! <Once again, Tim whispers so only Pat can hear> I am also required to say at least one a month. <Tim stops whispering>

Photos to come. I am in the process today of moving my 2 daughters and their mom 2 miles down the street. This weekend I am getting a camera(she got the one we had) and we will take some good pictures. I bought this as a goodbye present for myself. I belong to the Sun Valley Auto Club. There must be 20 911's parked there. The guys at the Club said for the money 38k this is the cleanest 911 turbo they have seen and are glad this one will actually be driven unlike the other one's that are there. They live very sad life's as they sit aroung 11 months a year wanting to be driven. I bought this car to carve up the roads of the west. I plan on putting 6-8k a year on it. I also bought it to take any prospects out for weekend getaways. I am a speed nut. Being an ex professional mountain biker and a lifetime member of the Jackson Hole Airforce the power of this car will suite my lifestyle. I am glad to be here and will hopefully add to an already great community.

POST 13Original post

$38k? That's a great price. Congrats! (on the car and on moving along in life)

POST 14Original post

Did you say airforce? Does that mean high speed runs at the local airstrip? Welcome!!

JHAF - we huck off cliffs for fun. My personal record is 151 feet It was 10 years ago though and there was 20 feet of fresh in the drop zone. The crater was the size of a van.

POST 17Original post

A 911 turbo will definitely ease the pain of a divorce. Now all you need is a dog and you're set. Enough excuses, POST SOME D**N PICS!!

POST 19Original post

Sounds great, congrats on your "new girl." Would love to see some pics.

Don't forget the seat belt for the dog, he will need it on those curvy roads.

POST 21Original post

Welcome aboard, newbie. We can't wait to see pics of your new P-car. (hint, hint) Congrats on the Big D - just don't forget about those little ones.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

pictures are still in the works. I bought a set of wheels from bruce another forum member and a standup guy. I took the car to the dealer and they gave me a free inspection. My coolant tank has a few hairline cracks and my tires are a little warn but other then that they said the car was in great shape. This dealer only had 14 or 15 new cars and I must admit mine was still the best looking. Photos coming with existing wheels and with new wheels in 2 weeks when they arrive. I have had the car 3 weeks and 1800 new miles. I am driving the heak out of it.

POST 23Original post

I posted pics of my Carrera before I even bought it! Then, another the day I got it home. Ban him unless he posts one soon... even if it is just a crappy iPhone pic! Also - I expect him to be abused if there are pumpkins present in the pic...

POST 24Original post

Newbie, don't make me get the "beating stick" out!

POST 26Original post

Im with Ed.... 3 weeks and 1800 miles and no pics??? Pics or Ban!!!

POST 27Original post

Two more days and he officially goes on the DNH (Do Not Help) list!

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Gosh dam photo program. Next week when I get my home station set up some larger pictures will come.

POST 31Original post

thanks pellapart, now my shoulder and neck feel much better after some twisting........

POST 33Original post

OK, he tried. I was going to flip and enlarge them, but they were too grainy and not worth reposting. At least he avoided the DNH list.

POST 34Original post

I am no photoshop pro, but I tried... they were pretty grainy so I did some smoothing and other things to try and clean them up after the re-size....at least they turned out better than my avatar

POST 35 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks fellows, I did buy a nice camera today and got home and the box had everything except the camera. Go figure. They are sending it UPS and when the new wheels come I will do an actual shoot with my friend Wheelock. He shoots a ton for Patagonia ans ESS eyeware. I am loving the car. Please stop snowing!!!!
