Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I put some Fabspeed mufflers on yesterday. Sounds great....the problem, which I'm not if it is a problem is..... They touch the heat shield which in turn touches the plastic rear bumper cover at the base of the rear wheel well. I cannot get them to sit 'further inside' in order to completely clear the heat shield. Is this something to worry about??

POST 2Original post

I would contact the store you bought them at or fabspeed directly. The heat shild should provide enough thermal displacement, but why second guess. Take a picture too so we can see for better judgement call

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Pics of the left and right. The mufflers are used.....and yes the car needs a wash.

POST 4Original post

WOW - fast response! you get +++++ points for that on this board! Is it only touching on that one point? If yes, I personally would just run them and keep my eye on it. These are something you bought second hand and put on your car? how does it sound? Was it stock before this?

POST 5Original post

That doesn't look right. They are sitting too low for some reason.

POST 6Original post

agreed they are low, but on the cans I just put in they had to be possitioned differantly then the originals so the inlets lined up with the cat pipes... also I found one needed to be pushed forward and one backwards to the linits so the tips lined up...If these have some minor alignment issues and the only thing touching is that corner..... of course if they can be adjusted with loosening the hardware and doing some shove and push and tweek, then you are better off... but the things look like they are used and that might be just the way it is going to be.... so I agree, adjust them better, but if that's the best they get....

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It is only touching at the one spot on both sides. I bought them off ebay. They sound great. I did did have stock cans on b4. They are mounted tight into the 3 threaded studs. Can't go any higher. I'll watch them. I need to go my 60K check up soon. I'll have the dealer look at them. Thanks for the advice.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Or......can I get adjustment by playing with the 2 vertical bolts??

POST 9Original post

I would suggest wedging another small piece (like 2x2) of heat shield at the contact point. Then you should be fine.

POST 10Original post

I wonder if those came off Ahmets's (I forgot his ID) car?? if so he could help you in knowing if that looks right, contact the seller and ask them if they had the same issue?

POST 11Original post

it's the 4 mounting tabs on the cans they are slightly bent.... take the cans off and bend the tabs back to the direction that will pull the mufflers away from the shield... also there are ver small plays (wiggles) that can also help in the adjustment... dont the just tight it up with gravity... you need another pair of hand to get the adjustment right... all you need is a .5 inch, which is doable.

POST 12Original post

thats a great point, since they were shipped the brackets might be off and that sure is an easy way to gain some space... +1 Red after looking at the drivers side, I agree, doing something would be better, that one is pushing out the bumper cover.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I did buy them from Ahmet. And yes the tabs were bent or compressed due to the 2 vertical bolts. Sounds like I could get a job a Midas after this is said and done.

Ha, or at least you can share your wisdom with others on this board. The problem is they look like 2" from the fender when you've got the car in the air. Then you lower it and they're touching, ha. I installed mine first without tips (so much louder without tips), and I could see they were touching. When I reinstalled with tips, I just gave an extra grunt to get them pushed in further. They are still very close, maybe slightly touching, but the heat shield does extend all the way done (like your pics) and I've never had an issue. You can probably get them in tighter, but if you're happy with the tips/alignment I'd say you're fine as they are. Anyway, good choice on picking up a used set, that's some $$ well spent!

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ahhhhhh Burger Meister Meister Burger....that makes me fell a whole lot better about the situation. The cans were half the $$$ as new. I have to say I did start the car without mufflers just to hear the song. Holy Crap! It gave me a woody. Thank you all for the input. Very valuable!!

POST 16Original post

I had a similar issue with my Fabspeeds except mine was almost touching on the right side (Passenger) . I just bent the heatsheild out a bit and that bought me a 3/8 inch clearance as there are was no more adjustment left in the tabs. Been like that for 5 months without any issue.

POST 17Original post

Are you sure that they are pushed in all the way towards the cats? Make sure the exhaust from the cat pipe is clean so not to bind muffler during installation. Just an idea.
