Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

what do you guys use to clean it?

POST 2Original post

Mr. Clean and water. Soak it for awhile and then rinse and let dry. Spray oil on it liberally and let air dry overnight. Install and clean MAF after driving the car a few days.

POST 3Original post

Just buy a new one. IMHO it's not the worth the risk of damaging your MAF by over oiling it. If you do decide to clean it, let it sit on newspapers overnight before you reinstall. I've read enough about it that I'm not sure the benefits out weigh the risks (especially if you already have an upgraded exhaust - one of the main benefits sound) When it's time to replace mine, I'm thinking of just going back to stock.

POST 4Original post

Oil does not ruin an MAF, it only dirties it and a new filter will do the same. This knowledge is not from reading about it, but by actually experiencing it. Soak your maf in motor oil overnight and then clean it and it will work like it did before you soaked it.

POST 5Original post

Well I have experienced having my MAF replaced. Maybe the dealer could have got away with just cleaning it, I don't know it was done under warranty. The reading about it part refers to the "gains" from a K&N. Several unbiased studies have been done.

POST 6Original post

I had K&N on another sports car which has a surface area 1/2 of 996's filter and it made no noticeable difference in performance. With 996's big filter panel that isn't restictive, I don't even think there is any gain in getting K&N alone. Upgrade to evoms intake, exhaust and chip flash together will yield real gains together but don't expect anything alone to produce more power. BTW - If you hold the K&N to a light, you'll see how easily light comes through compared to stock paper filter. I really doubt if it filters air as well as paper.

POST 7Original post

Most people just replace the MAF rather than clean it, including dealers. I have never understood why someone would spend $400+ for no reason at all. I have NEVER seen a bad MAF that was not physically broken. When you are using an oiled filter, the maf gets dirty just like your spark plugs, but the plugs have fuel to help keep them clean.
