Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

it is also possible this has an external antenna that is disconnected, though they usually don't connect with regular wires (like the ones in the photo), but with a shielded cable instead.
Leading evidence: 'Disconnect though they usually don't connect' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'solder joint or a broken wire' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect though they usually don't connect' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Do Porsche change these things around depending on if the car is RHD or LHD?

Now it is NOT the Key FOB itself or the battery, (they have been replaced by the Porsche Dealership, but it didn't fix the problem (but of course they still charged me for it $400
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 2001 996 Cab and the remote key FOB has stopped working properly. Now it is NOT the Key FOB itself or the battery, (they have been replaced by the Porsche Dealership, but it didn't fix the problem (but of course they still charged me for it $400
)
The problem is that the key FOB remote will only work to open and close the doors if I hold the key (and press the button) within about a foot of the sensor on the front dash (it works perfectly then) but it won't work from any further away (neither key will), it is not a battery problem.
The Porsche Dealer is telling me that it is the Porsche Alarm Control Unit PN
996 618262 03
and that it would need to be replaced to get this working properly again, BUT the price of just the Unit is AUD$1900. It seems VERY strange to me that this could be the cause of the problem, (the problem is really the range of the sensor at the front of the car, it doesn't sense the signal from the key unless the KEY FOB is right next to it).
Anyone got any ideas? I am not going to spend $2k+ just for this convenience but also suspect that if I did, it may not fix the problem and know that the Porsche dealer would not give me my money back.
Oh I had a look at the unit and there seems to be a wire pulled out, not sure where it goes or if that could be the cause of the problem, but the Porsche dealer did look at it and if that was the problem surely they would have fixed it.
That sounds like an antenna issue. There is a small coil antenna in the receiver that is probably disconnected or broken. This is reparable, but would need to be done by someone who works on modern electronics. Likely a bad solder joint or a broken wire. the whole board doesn't need replacing.
it is also possible this has an external antenna that is disconnected, though they usually don't connect with regular wires (like the ones in the photo), but with a shielded cable instead.
U do have a cab so its posible it got wet and us not working properly. In the states we have these guys that can test and refirb these units. They also sell a waterproof box.

Isn't the antenna in the drivers side A pillar? I remember some hack repair that suggested pulling the antenna out of the wire bundle and reconfiguring it. I can't find the instructions anymore.
fantastic thank you, I will try this and see if it fixes it, jsut one further question before I try it, I am in Australia so my car is RHD, will the antenna still be in the drivers side pillar? (which would be the passenger side in the USA) or will it be in the passenger side? Do Porsche change these things around depending on if the car is RHD or LHD?
Is that the control unit pictured? Where is it mounted in the vehicle? I have a new to me 99 and the key fob does nothing (other than the red indicator light flash upon pressing) so I need to start my investigation.
My brain tells me it makes sense that the antenna should be on the side with the steering wheel, but my brain is guessing. Wish I could answer your question, but can't.
it is under the passenger seat in my car. I certainly wouldn't start there though, as it is very expensive, start with the batteries in your FOB, then perhaps the FOB itself
Thanks Billy
It works, it works, yay, now what are my chances of getting my $500 back from the Porsche dealer that I spent on a new key, which they thought was the problem. Also I am so glad that I found this post, because the Dealer was trying to charge me another $2k plus to fix it (a new alarm module box). They really should be better than this and know how to fix this problems, especially since there have been bulletins from Porsche about the problem. A couple of points from me.
- the aerial is in the passenger side pillar on a Right Hand Drive car, and
- the remote wasn't working any better at all after I had carried out the procedure and was testing it before putting the A Pillar back together, so I was really annoyed, but once I put the A Pillar cover back on it worked a treat, don't know why this would make any difference but it did (for me) thanks for making this fix available. It is very easy but I admit I was very nervous about cutting a wire in my Porsche
