What I mean is, if, during the summer, you find you have to replace the worn-out rear tires, you don't need to take the wheels off and prop the car up on cinderblocks while you have new tires mounted.

I ran 17s (Dunlop Wintersport M3s) on my TT during the winter in place of the 18s (PS2s) I used in the Summer and the smaller rim looked fine.

Right now i am running summer tires on 18" sport rims (i think they are sport rims - just take a look at my avatar) but I am leaning heavily towards getting a set of the 17" turbo twists (replicas) with snows for the winter.

I've generally used Town Fair Tire for my tires and I know they don't carry them.

I'm of the opinion that the clear majority of the time we operate on a solid surface so my '01 F/awd RX300 runs on nice and quiet, comfortably riding summer use only Bridgestone Turanza's all year around.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thanks to everyone who submitted their two cents but now its decision time so here are the three choices:
2002 911 C4 Cab to be driven in the winter
(1) Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60 on 18" wheels (one set of wheels)
225/40/R18 Fronts
265/35/R18 Rears
(2) Nokian's on 17" wheels (carry two sets of wheels)
(3) Don't drive it in the winter (very lame!)
PS - apologies if i screwed the poll up but first time trying it.
two sets of wheels is the way to go...I dont think either tire is better, both are very good - I had Blizzak LM-25's...what a blast to drive in the snow.
We dont get snow in Seattle but a lot of rain and some snow....I found that the Porsche performance characteristics like good brakes, steering, power, and agility made it a fabulous car for inclement weather....it is a wonder weapon against the elements of the highway.... enjoy it - why not
If you're serious about driving in the winter months, get a dedicated set of snow tires and smaller wheels. Narrow, high-profile tires w/ modern winter compound will absolutely amaze you. I love driving my C4 in the snow.
My vote is also on two sets of wheels.
Here in Stockholm, Sweden they love roadsalt so I bought a cheap set of black 17" wheels and put studded Nokians on.
I don't have to worry about the wheels getting scruffy and it's much easier to switch between the summer and the winter set.
ps. with a hardtop, you don't have to worry about the cabrio top either...
2 sets of wheels - I don't care what sizes they are or what winter tires you use.
2 sets of wheels makes it easier, simpler, cheaper and provides you with a "backup spare" in case you ever have to take a single tire to be replaced.
I went with option #2 since its the safest bet for your current 18s and, assuming a smaller width on the 17s, they should provide a marginal improvement to mobility in the snow (where thinner is better) BUT if pricing is much better for the 18s and cost is an issue, I'd choose whichever is most cost effective for you.
I also like having 2 sets of rims because I like having the option/ability to swap them out on my own at a time that is most convenient for me (aka late at night when the tire shop is closed and the temps just dropped belong acceptable temps for the summer tires and/or there was a freak snow storm in November
).
Where did you get pricing on the Nokians locally?
Not if your Summer rims are 18s and your Winter rims are 17s.

"..elements of the highway.."
But little good against all the other IDIOTS out there.
You "C4" aspect may not be as functional as you would desire. It takes a fair amount of desparate R vs F wheelspin to stiffen up the VC fluid and Trac activation always prevents that from happening.
I voted for the 17s (2 sets) but I am using my 18 factory sport designs for my Blizzak LM 60s which should arrive shortly. Summer tires are on my 18 inch Victor innsbruck wheels.
I'm of the opinion that the clear majority of the time we operate on a solid surface so my '01 F/awd RX300 runs on nice and quiet, comfortably riding summer use only Bridgestone Turanza's all year around. In case of need the tire chains, rear first, are always at the ready. Those allow me a lot of leeway maneuvering around all the FWD vehicles, some with cable "chains" tightly wrapped around the front axle, parked helter-skelter on SR520.
I'm buying a race car from california... not only has it never had a set of rain tires, the windshield wipers have been removed!!
What I mean is, if, during the summer, you find you have to replace the worn-out rear tires, you don't need to take the wheels off and prop the car up on cinderblocks while you have new tires mounted. You can put on two winter wheels and still move the thing around in your driveway.
Right now i am running summer tires on 18" sport rims (i think they are sport rims - just take a look at my avatar) but I am leaning heavily towards getting a set of the 17" turbo twists (replicas) with snows for the winter. My concern is how ridiculous the 17" rims and tires may look on the car as i have been so used to the 18".
I originally priced the Nokian's on 17" rims at Fetzer in Southport, CT, who do a solid job as i have used them in the past on numerous occassions but they do tend to be a bit pricey with what they sell but then again, quality isn't cheap.
If you are interested in their pricing, let me know and I'll shoot you a PM.
They won't look as good as what you've got on it now but I don't think the 17s will look that bad. You'll fill in the extra space through the increase in the tire size so it's not like you're going to create a massive gap between the tire and the fender. I ran 17s (Dunlop Wintersport M3s) on my TT during the winter in place of the 18s (PS2s) I used in the Summer and the smaller rim looked fine.
I don't think 17s will fit on my C4S so, unfortunately, the pricing won't help. I was just curious where you found the Nokians locally. I've generally used Town Fair Tire for my tires and I know they don't carry them. I don't particularly love dealing with them but they've never caused me any problems either. I'm still going back and forth on what I want to do during the Winter. At this point I'm planning putting the snows back on my Volvo and using it most of the time but with PS2s on the Porsche I can't really use it when the temps approach freezing even if the roads are dry. I hate the idea of letting the car basically sit in the garage for 6+ months...so I might just get a 2nd set of rims and winter tires so I can take it out. I already do that with the Sonett...although that car at least has all seasons on it. If it weren't for the damn salt on the roads, I might consider taking it out in the cold! Anyway, we'll see.

Thanks to everyone for adding their 2 cents. I am going to go with the Nokian's on an extra set of 17" rims. I appreciate the insight from one and all.
