Once the trans was removed from the engine I left the engine on the ATV jack during all of my work, I jacked it back up and did not have to bend over so far to do the resealing I did on it.

- I have the factory shop manual and it tells me to use a special support fixture that adapts to a regular floor jack to support/lower the engine and trans.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all,
Wondering if some of you more experienced 996 people can help me out? I am removing the engine and transmission from a 996. I got everything disconnected and I am ready to "drop" both of them. Questions I have:
- I have the factory shop manual and it tells me to use a special support fixture that adapts to a regular floor jack to support/lower the engine and trans. Do I really need this special fixture? I was planning to use a rubber pad and/or a block of wood (in between the gap under the bell housing) on top of my floor jack to lower them. Will this be okay? What have others done? I would imagine that not everyone uses the special PORSCHE support fixture!
- Would I be able to "drop" the engine and trans unit like on the late 80's and earlier 911's?? I have removed and installed several of those in my years of playing with Porsches. I have a rubber pad that goes on top of my floor jack pad and I jack the engine/trans unit up right under the sump cover of the engine. Everything "balances" on the jack fairly well and is fairly easy to install this way. Where should I put the jack pad on the 996 engine so that everything will "balance"? I don't feel too good about jacking up on the oil sump cover.
If anyone can please share their personal experience and/or advice............I would really appreciate it!
Thanks in advance!!

I just did mine, I used two jacks, an ATV jack and a regular floor jack. The ATV jack under the engine sump and a regular jack under the trans, the whole unit would not balance on the ATV jack I had. Once the trans was removed from the engine I left the engine on the ATV jack during all of my work, I jacked it back up and did not have to bend over so far to do the resealing I did on it.
It was not hard to drop but it had to be done in two steps as the height of the engine and trans was too high when the car is jacked up enough to get the unit out from under the car. I started with a box made from 2x4s and plywood on top of the ATV jack and set the engine on jackstands while I removed the box. Did the same in reverse on the way back in.
Good luck and watch to be sure EVERYTHING is disconnected, I forgot the clutch slave and the ruined the line to it, $85 later and all was well with that.
I have some more pics I will post to the link tonight.
an02Boxster...........thanks a bunch! Thanks also for the link to your pictures.......That was very helpful!! Great idea with the ATV jack! I actually called a friend who works on motorcycles and he is going to let me borrow his. Will pick it up tomorrow and continue the job!
Mfletch...........thanks for your pic too! Great idea on using the engine hoist legs to hold the engine.
What is the air/oil separator that you are referring to??
Hey guys, I have a cracked cylinder. And there is coolant in my oil. But not oil in the coolant. I would like to drop the engine and transmission to replace the head. Only problem is ...I have never dropped an engine before. Is there a step by step guide to doing this? I would appreciate any help thanks.
