My 996 leaked coolant and it gradually got worse until I replaced the coolant tank this year.
Leading evidence: 'Replace coolant tank this year' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check rest of the system' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Have to fix that before checking the rest of the system.

There are nice tools to fill the system and get the air out, but not worth the investment for a once every ten years.

Best to leave the engine to sit and cool before proceding with filling with water.

Funniest emergency repair trick for radiators I picked up from a fellow scuba diver that was an emergency repair tech on a submarine.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Headed out yesterday and temp light started blinking (low coolant) so was pulling in to buy some distilled water and the coolant started spewing out from over or behind the driver wheel aft of the radiator. Headed to RUF and added water every few miles until I realized I was playing roulette as the temp went up. Opted for the $120 tow versus the $15,000 engine.
I'm pretty stubborn and could have tried nursing it all the way there continuing to stop for water but thought about all the expensive engine failures that are no one's fault versus me destroying one by trying to be cute. I could never take the abuse I would have gotten from the board here so decided discretion was the better part of valor. Have not heard from RUF yet but will let you know when I here.
This is the first time in two years of ownership I have actually been stranded by the car. Most of my repairs have been self imposed and I had been impressed with the car's reliability. Still am but have never been stranded by my Yukon in 200,000 miles. Oh well, just looking forward to getting it back.
Bummer. You did the right thing by towing it to RUF. Have you been leaking coolant during the last 2 years? My 996 leaked coolant and it gradually got worse until I replaced the coolant tank this year. Let us know the outcome of your Porsche. GL
No I don't believe I have. Since the water was coming from behind the radiator I'm doubting the tank is the issue but we'll see. As a preventative move I replaced the cap a year or so ago as I read here that was a common failure point and assumed I had the original.
low impact ( abrupt compression) to the front end can break the plastic outlets on the side of the radiator that connect to the radiator hoses. I had to replace passenger side radiator due to damage from an off at TWS in Dec.
Report so far is a broken hose. Have to fix that before checking the rest of the system. My off at ECR was on the other side!
I'm hoping if it's just a hose and replacing the 55 gallons of coolant our cars hold the repair will be less than replacing the whole engine! :-)
I am in the process of new radiator (just one, not three), coolant flush and coolant refill as we speak. :-)
Oh yeah, turns out the battery was on it's last leg (at least I an not stranded by that now). Adding new wheels to boot.... there goes my ESPP!
You're kidding about the 55 gallons right? That's almost 500 pounds of fluid. (55 gallons = 207 litres = 207 kg = 458 pounds assuming specific gravity equal to water)
Bad news first. Approximate density of coolant (Triethylene glycol) is 1.1274, which is greater than deIonized water.
Good news is that the system coolant capacity is approximately 22.5 liters, which is 25.37 Kg or 55.81 lbs of coolant, much less than the 55 gallon estimate above. So we've managed to shave off some additional weight!
Just got it back and the coolant (2 x $40 = $80) was more than the hose ($35). All in for $300 plus the $120 towing. That's a record low for me at RUF. They are all nice guys though so I enjoy doing business there.
What happens if the coolant goes low in any engine especially one not under pressure, filled completely and most importantly hot is the water boils and you'll play hard to get the water to stop boiling without pressure and a cooler engine. Since your line was loosing pressure thats one ingredient with the second being the engine's hot. You have to be careful not to crack a block in situations like that. Worse yet getting the engine and heads too hot. Valve springs taking heat takes away the spring ability. It can cause floating valves as a performance problem later on while the owner wonders what's up thinking its bad gas or something. Anyway be careful dealing with stuff like that.
Funniest emergency repair trick for radiators I picked up from a fellow scuba diver that was an emergency repair tech on a submarine. Pepper in a cooling system swells in the hot water and can plug small holes in radiators.
Anyway if your engine was running and hot plus just blew its coolant I'd count on the engine internals being too hot to not boil water ingested. Best to leave the engine to sit and cool before proceding with filling with water. A cracked engine from water hitting the hot metal could hurt pretty bad.
I am looking to flush my radiator. just bought the car (2002) 20k miles on it, and I am sure it needs new coolant. Anything special on changing it? I plan on flushing it with a standard flush. Is there only one plug for the fluid? I'm a newby, and still figuring it all out.
Thanks!
Take it to a shop, I started it and got over my head. The lines you will flush with a near the battery in the frunk. Directional arrows show flow. Use distiller not tap water, too much crap in it.
There are nice tools to fill the system and get the air out, but not worth the investment for a once every ten years. Then you have the waste to dispose of.
David,
Your car's looking sweet! Speaking of the track, are you going to the club races at TWS in March (18-20)? I'll be there in the tower. Let me know.
