I like them in my Boxster but newer models (not sure of the cutover date) eliminated the holes in the vent housings so not everybody can use these.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am doing a few off season upgrades while the 996 sits in the garage. I just installed my Lloyd mats, clear corners, now onto my in-dash cup holders. I have a quick question before I begin.. Here is my current setup in my dash. Vents HVAC Radio CD holders Empty area (sunglasses) Is there a way I could do this: Vents Cup holders Radio HVAC Empty Area I've seen people do this: Vents Cup Holder Radio Empty Area HVAC Is everything pretty much mix and match? It looks like the empty area has a bit more narrow shape compared to the HVAC. Thanks for the help.

yeah i'm pretty sure my cupholders are under my vents... above my radio... because the A/C keeps my drinks cold .. hehe lets see if this link works... https://rennlist.com/forums/attachme...n-dsc_0198.jpg

Did you have to buy a different housing for the HVAC so that it fits at the bottom??

woah, what is that in front of the passenger seat? a glove box?? can I put one in my MK1?

Yes, you do they have them at suncoast for $6

POST 10Original post

I have the stock cupholders above the radio (where your HVAC is), and honestly, I wouldn't recommend installing them there or anywhere in the center console. They are too flimsy for anything but a small coffee, and if you spill (which will happen at some point), guess where the liquid is going to end up? That's right, all over your radio and HVAC system. Its a recipe for disaster. Get one of these instead. http://www.suncoastparts.com/product//411989.html

Where is my elbow going to go??

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 8247986

Either way you are looking at a compromise. Personally I'd choose the one that doesn't have the potential to trash the electronics in my car. The choice is yours.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8247998

who listens to the radio anyway??

POST 14Original post

If you could place the cup-holders in the space where your CD trays are, that could be a good way around the potential of dripping / spilling over your electronics, BUT, that lower section of the center console is tilted back slightly (ie: not level). Here's one more option to consider. http://www.ultimatecupholders.com/containers.html

where do i put my foot?

POST 16Original post

I had a Mk I 996 and got these: http://eagleday.stores.yahoo.net/9962.html They are oem Porsche cupholders that clip into 3 little holes in the air vents - there is a different one for each side so be sure to order one of each. They worked great and don't hang the drinks over any electronics.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 8248172

I know where I'd like to put mine.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 8248443

I like them in my Boxster but newer models (not sure of the cutover date) eliminated the holes in the vent housings so not everybody can use these. The down side is that they will only hold a can or water bottle - the smaller the better - and they seem a bit fragile.

POST 19Original post

How do you get your foot that close to the seat? Put the Ultimate cup holder on the passenger side. I have two in my car the one on the drivers side holds a 10oz water under my knee, it never gets in the way. If I have a large drink I put it on the passenger's side.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 8249245

+1 for the ultimate cup holder on the passenger side. If I put a tall travel mug in there, it ends up being very convenient, just within reach to the right of the shift ****.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just installed by in-dash cup holders. They seem pretty decent. I dont see anything dripping down on the electronics because the bottom of the cupholder is closed. They seem to be an upgraded model of the holders in my Audi. I just wish i could have replaced the silly CD holder instead of my empty tray. Too bad the HVAC didn't fit in that space.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 8249803

I guess because you are MK1 your cupholders are different than mine.. yours are 2 separate pop-outs right? The ones in ours are not closed on the bottom so they can leak.. but they will not leak onto the electronics (or at least they don't for me) because they are popped away from it. I have leaked condensation from cups or spilled hot coffee, haha, and it drips way back onto the shifter.. ie. my hand.. not the electronics, lol. And yes, I hate the CD holder too.. i need to get the empty tray.. that thing is a waste of space.. You should get the surround for the HVAC for the bottom.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yea i will get the surround for the HVAC soon.

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey I owe some pics from my in-dash cupholder install. Notice the closed in bottom to prevent drips...

Just select which you want via the little radio button on the page. Price seems to have gone up as I recall paying about $20 or so. Granted it was a looooooong time ago. What's really funny is I just checked eBay and Oklahoma Foreign is selling USED lower shelves for the same price as new.

Gotcha, I overlooked that option on the webpage.

POST 31Original post

Those in dash cup holders seem to position the beverage above window level. Not good for local law enforcement. Guess you have to put the beverage in a red solo cup. The law can't see through them.

POST 32Original post

You put your foot on the gas pedal ---- I got my color coordinated cup holder at Wally World for a whole 99 cents. Just becareful when shutting the door. Chuck

Here is one I have been working on. This one is the prototype and I have yet to install.... I will post when I am finished with it and its installed...
