Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You do need to support the shaft once it is out, used wire for mine.
Leading evidence: 'Use wire' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect cardan shaft' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
The only difference dropping the engine on a C4 vs a C2 is disconnecting the Cardan shaft, which is what Porsche calls the front drive shaft.
Disconnect driveshaft and we had no issues whatsoever

Actually, its quite simple to disconnect the driveshaft and we had no issues whatsoever.

Three of us tackled the job and, with the use of a lift and transmission jack, we were able to complete it in just over 8 hours.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just thought I'd share my successful IMS install with anyone who is contemplating tackling the job themselves, give you a bit more confidence. Bought my first P-car, black '99 C4, back in Nov 09 with about 43k on it and always had the IMS in the back of my mind. Jake Raby builds our 914 race motors for us and after talking with him at Road Atlanta one weekend he sufficiently convinced me that it was time to take the leap. The clutch was also on its last legs which was brought up when I had the PPI done back in Nov. So Merry Xmas to me, I got a new clutch, IMS, and RMS. Three of us tackled the job and, with the use of a lift and transmission jack, we were able to complete it in just over 8 hours. I bought the LN Engineering kit and tools and as long as you take the time to understand the tools and what they are meant for, it makes the job much, much easier to tackle. I wouldn't say its an every man type of install but it ain't impossible.
I was even more nervous about tackling this ourselves because I had been curious and called around some shops to see what they charged and the moment you mention C4 its like you'd think you just asked them to do the impossible. Actually, its quite simple to disconnect the driveshaft and we had no issues whatsoever. So don't let that deter you!
Anyway, just wanted to share the success story because I'm thrilled to have the car back on the road and have dreamed of owning a P-car for years. Best of luck to anyone who takes this project on!
Thanks for sharing your experience. I am planning on doing the IMS/RMS upgrade on my 2000 C4 Tip Cab very soon. Glad to hear that the C4 isn't that difficult. I too had heard that the C4 was a lot more work, but that seems to be just the shops justifying the cost. Any pics of the install?
The only difference dropping the engine on a C4 vs a C2 is disconnecting the Cardan shaft, which is what Porsche calls the front drive shaft. It is three bolts. On my back under the car on jack stands this take maybe 15 minutes. You do need to support the shaft once it is out, used wire for mine. If a shop is saying this is a big deal then I would go to another shop!
I am curious to find more Tip folks doing this upgrade themselves.
TomF: let me know when you tackle this... I am in Seattle as well and would love to watch/learn/assist.
tips are harder to pull because you have to remover the starter to access the torque converter bolts = get to the starter... remover intake?
and FWIW tips seem to have worse looking bearing in my findings... we think it could be RPM related (low rpm putting around town) but I am not going to speculate - Jake R may have seen same/differant, you can ask him
