Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check fuses, they're ok' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'isolated' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fuses, also there are headlight relays' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I did not touch the new bulb with my fingers, I used a paper towel to handle it..

Suspected cause
If it is then you at least know the problem is isolated to the other headlamp assembly and it's related components.

What I thought was going to be a simple task turned out to be such an ordeal.

I'm no electrician so I cannot repair this myself, so if it does prove to need repair I may need to find someone to fix it, I'm not sure this is a part that I'm going to be able to just replace.

But I do want to say that I bought the Silverstar Ultra (I don't have xenon, am I the only one?) and they are so much brighter and whiter than the OEM, that I had to replace the other one too to match.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It would be a nut driver or socket with 3" extension. It is a 1/2 turn locking mech, turn it 1/2 turn and the headlight will fly out on to the ground. Be ready to catch it. Tool has 5mm stamped on it.
Make sure to line up all four of the mount guides with the slides when you put it back in so that you do not damage the socket.
Did you take the spare tire out? The tool kit and jack assy are mounted in a foam "nest" inside of the wheel.
Glad I nosed around when I first got the car. Odd tool that I think just looks like an L shape for nothing in general except maybe one of the old style handy spark plug wrench's. It's probably in there.
well i feel silly... it was in the spare
there was no foam insert, but it was shoved in there behind the spare. And yes, that headlight just popped right out.
Now to figure out where the bulb goes... lol
Don't touch the actual bulb with your fingers the little bit of oil will damage it from the heat. If you did touch it clean it with alcohol.
Check the fuses, also there are headlight relays under the dash on the sidewall by your left knee one of those might be bad.
You should have a fuse diagram paper folded up in the fuse box, by your left ankle. If you do not ask for a copy of the MK1 or MK2 (what year is yours again?) fuse layout from someone on R'list.
I checked the fuses, they're ok. The high beam and blinker works....
I don't understand.
The bulb I took out was definitely burnt although that one was not too easy to get out, I wonder if I may have damaged the connection somehow in the process? The bulb I put back in is as seated as I could possible seat it.. I did not touch the new bulb with my fingers, I used a paper towel to handle it.. I don't know what else to check.
You might try swapping the new bulb into the working headlight to confirm it's good. If it is then you at least know the problem is isolated to the other headlamp assembly and it's related components.
Yes I understand
If the whole headlight assembly wasn't seated into the fender... I doubt any of the other lights would work .. right?
Either way... I figured it out! The power wire to the low beam bulb (the one I replaced) got loose in my rigorous attempt (why are they so hard to come out?) to remove the old bulb and wasn't making a proper connection. The 3rd or 4th time, I lost count, that I inspected everything the wire just fell out.. so I shoved it back in and hoped for the best. I assumed it was a failed attempt and that this needed repair but I put the whole thing back in the car anyway and low and behold it works now. It might only be until I hit a big bump and the wire shakes loose again, but we'll see. It felt like it was in there pretty good, I have no idea. But that's the cause anyway.
Thanks everyone for all your help and guidance. What I thought was going to be a simple task turned out to be such an ordeal. Geez!
But aside from the aggravation You two BONDED
If the wire gets semi-loose (intermittent contact) it could cause spikes that would pop the bulb again.
