Leading evidence: 'Replace cats, codes never came back' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'engine hoses, wiring harness have been chewed' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check air changeover valve' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I reset the CEL and took it for a "spirited" drive.

Suspected cause
If you find any then you have to suspect the engine hoses, wiring harness have been chewed on.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Now I just need to order the electric changeover valve and I think it will be all back to normal sans the rattling cat.
Ok so the CEL came on today and I put my scanner on it. I get three codes
P1108
P0491
P0492
Also I noticed one of the cats is rattling. Would the cat have anything to do with these codes? And where should I start? Keep in mind this is a supercharged car and I have no clue how to get to anything on the top of the engine.
Thanks for any help I have 30 days to fix it before I have to take it to emissions to get it registered.

You owe me a lot of bucks now having to search the internet.
I don't even know if the info is correct
P0491 Secondary air injection system, bank 1 “ malfunction Wiring, AIR solenoid, hose connections, mechanical fault
P0492 Secondary air injection system, bank 2 “ malfunction Wiring, AIR solenoid, hose connections, mechanical fault
Maybe some high G here there and everywhere flying it got something not used to real driving to loosen up. I'd just check the hoses first.
Thanks I read all the threads I could find on it just not sure if they are related to the loose rattling cat. The car hasn't been driven for almost two years so it's bound to have a few issues. I will check this stuff tonight when I get home.
My cats died (got CEL + cat code) within a few weeks after they started to rattle. OEM cats from suncoast are insanely expensive, was thinking of going aftermarket but found a set removed from a car when almost new that was being converted to a race car. Used cats come up for sale once in a while.. check the FS section
So these are from RennTech.org
DME7.8.x The only place I could find these codes
Hope it helps
P0491 Factory Fault Code 591 - Fan output stage 3 Open circuit, below limit, or above limit
P0492 Secondary air injection system, Bank 2 Below limit
P1108 Oxygen sensing adaptation, lower load range, Bank 2 Below limit
With only 47K on it the cats might be covered under pollution warranty. 10? years 80k mi. Also Check your secondary air injection pump. It lives by your left knee when you are standing behind the car looking at the engine. It comes on for about 15 to .. seconds at cold start to help light off the cats.
it is 8 years:
"Specified major emission control components
are covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles."
If any of the codes are from the cat take it to a dealer and try for good will coverage on the cats it is only ~two months over.
I just realized isn't this is the one with a supercharger, dealer would probably get a good chuckle.
Check to make sure your air pump is working on cold starts. Check the electric change over valve and the vacuum hose leading to it. Check all hoses from the air pump as well.
So to get to all of these things I need to check is it under the car or on top of the motor? I know on my Boxster S I can get to the top of the motor easily but how do you do it on the 996?
On top of the motor
behind
the alternator. It is hard to get to...I had a problem years ago and I thing it ended up being the vacuum line leading to the electric changeover valve. If it all checks out then check the air changeover valve.
I've had these codes.... Replaced the cats, codes never came back. I would go with 200 cell racing cats since you car is SC... The high heat will kill oem cats in no time. But if it is under warranty... Then go for and then sell it.
No doubt it's expensive.... But most likely it is not vac related or any of the above mentioned.... Just cutting to the chase... My car is SC and has been through this before like many SC owners. Though I have seen dealers replace cats under warranty even if it is SC modded....
But I've been wrong before...
I'm going to replace the cats regardless since the rattling they make is enough to drive a person nuts. I was thinking of going with the bypass pipes. Anyone here have luck with them and not getting a CEL when used with the 02 adapters?
Not being driven for nearly two years can cause all sorts of problems. I came across a Porsche (993 Turbo S) the other day that had not been driven for a bit longer than that and the tech told me he had to replace the fuel pump (it had seized), new fuel lines, and injectors, among other things.
Plus a car that sits unused that long can attract the rodents and they love to gnaw on things plastic and rubber.
I'd give the car a thorough inspection looking for any rodent sign. If you find any then you have to suspect the engine hoses, wiring harness have been chewed on. In some cases the engine has to come of the car to access/replace all the damaged hoses/wiring harness.
Sincerely,
Macster.
I shouldn't have said not driven but driven very little. About 1000 miles in the last two years. It was in a garage as well. I'm not too worried about it I know its something simple just getting to it will be my main problem.
Ok guys upon further inspection I found a broken Vacuum line that goes to what I believe is the electronic change over valve. Unfortunately it broke the nipple of the valve and it's behind the supercharger and I have no clue how to remove the supercharger. Im going to plug the vacuum line going to the intake for now so I'm not running lean.
If anyone has a write up on the supercharger removal that would be great!
Fly 996 are you saying you have no CEL with the bypass or with the 200 cats?
Yes it has a oiled K&N I'm going to pull the MAF and clean it but I found yet another broken vacuum line going to the boost bypass valve so I fixed that one easily. The car idles a million times better now with the vacuum leaks plugged. Now I just need to order the electric changeover valve and I think it will be all back to normal sans the rattling cat.
I reset the CEL and took it for a "spirited" drive. Boy does she run great! Pulls like a freight train and it's a nice change from the Viper. The CEL did return but this time the only code was for the Bank 2 cat which is the one that rattles so I'm guessing as soon as I replace it I will be CEL free.....for now. Thanks for all the help everyone!
