The only thing I can not figure out is how to remove the wire lead/connector attached to glass from the old Bayonet style mounting pin I'm replacing w/ new scre type.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

well,
My parents and bro live south of Tucson.. so I can swing over there.. about 13 hour drive.. then go pick it up in Tempe.. then drive back.. hopefully it will fit in the minivan with the chairs out. I think it will. I will check with a freight company and if shipping is less than $300, then I'll have it shipped.
Hershey, PA?
What's there besides the chocolate factory? Y'all talkin bout Manheim?
I used to go to that area quite often... in fact I still tavel to NJ monthly...
Hershey has a HUGE Porsche only swap meet every year.
http://www.cpa-pca.org/swap/
Been going for many years, used to be in a place called Roundtop but that was way back..
I think when people sell them with low starting prices they sell pretty cheap.. some hold out for higher amounts and spend months trying to sell them. I have seem several go around the $200 mark.. its a fair price and he is most likely legit
nice score - GL getting it home
Good luck. The seller might of gotten it in a storage locker auction or you might of bought a house that goes with the top in a foreclosure sale. Pretty tough times for some. Nice find. Grab it quick. Might be he's an apartment manager that sells dead beat renters stuff
Oh..I'm not taking my Cab.. I'll take the minvan..
At the same time, I don't want to be stranded on I-10 in West Texas with IMS failure.. Oops..did I just say that?
Isnt it a great feeling? I do hope it all works out. Too bad the weather isnt better. Sure woudl be nice to that the car on that drive. If he will nto ship and it was local pick up only, that would explain the checp price! i think you are ok with it
You got me all motivated now. I just offered this guy $100 for this one. It's about 143 miles north of Louisville:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=370294519758
That aint your color..and you have to get it painted...
I'd say be patient and put a "saved serach" on ebay..and let it send you new listings daily... you'll find what you're looking for. Also, keep looking at Craigslist...
Some dealers used to let people store them at the dealership, and never came back to pick them up. There were about 2 for sale in Rhode Island a few months ago.
I have a hardtop in in New England their great for the cold season..it changes the total look of the cab..their awesome...good luck it looks good..do you have the lock down tool for the hardtop?
Holy smokes! I just started lurking over here a few months ago (gotta get educated before i pull the trigger on 996 coupe), but in the Z world hardtops are generally closer to $2,000 than $1,000. 2yrs ago when I snagged a local one for around $1k including mounting kit and a hoist I thought I got the best hardtop deal on earth LOL!
John, there was just a thread recently (in the last couple days) that has the info you need. You'll need to figure out if the top has the old or new style hardware as well as if you car has the receiving hardware (and if so if it is the older or newer hardware). I, and a few others posted some pics as well. Let me know if you don't find the thread and I'll get it for you.
And yes, the hardtop is nice to have. As others have pointed out, it totally changes the look of the car. I used to put on a second set of wheels (different) when I put on the hardtop and it literally looked like I have a different car.
Thanks Dell,
I'm mentally preparing myself for a long **** drive this weekend. Once I get it back to the house, I'm sure I'll have fun trying to put the top on. I did find the hardtop installation instruction on Renntech yet it was little confusing as I really can't visualize what the top and the hardware look like without having seen it.
Are you going to pick up the hardtop with a pick-up truck or your 911? If you are planning on your 911, just make sure that you have the proper receiver hardware on the car. Depending on the year of your 911, you may not have the receiver hardware installed. Also there are 2 types of receiver hardware, a twist pin and a screw pin.
I was going to pick it up in a minivan....but I found a shipper for $420.. which I will use. Where is the receiver hardware located? I may not have them...if so, I'll have to wait till I get the hardtop and then install...
On the cover that is behind the rear seats on your cab, there are 2 holes with plastic plugs in them. Pop off the plugs and look down in there and see if you have the receivers installed. all 99-2002 cars had the twist pin receivers installed at the factory, and later cars did not have any receivers installed unless the car was ordered from the factory with a hardtop.
I tried to copy the link for those who were looking for a hardtop. Its in the rennlist classifieds 12-31-09.
goodluck.
3 YES 3, 996 Hardtops (grey, maroon, black)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey,
I am helping my friend's father get rid of a bunch of Porsche stuff. I have 3 hardtops from 996s. I am located in Westchester NY and would like to sell locally. I have no way to ship them but am willing to travel a little to get these moved. All tops are in great shape, don't recall seeing any issues. They are a little dusty in the pics.
Looking for $900 per hardtop. I also have stands avail if you are interested.
Thanks!!

Yes, you have the old style receiver (Part D in the illustration).
Do you know what year 996 your new top is from? If it is an early <2002 996, then you are most likely good to go with the attachment hardware that the top has installed.
If your top has the newer screw in hardware, I would recommend that you replace your existing receivers with the new screw-in ones.
Orient,
So, is it the Pin/Screw that turns to lock in place? If so, where does the "hex" wrench come into place?
Well, I'm not sure what year top it is yet...
Thanks,
The Hex wrench is used to engage the locking pin. It fits in the top of the pin, and you use it to lock/unlock the pin. The instructions are in your owners manual.
The screw locks are much better than the bayonet locks. Be sure to lubricate the windshield header gasket with silicone spray, and put a little lithium grease on the thread locks and on the 2 outboard windshield header alignment pins. The thread locks are only tightened to 32 ft/lb. All of this will minimize squeaking & creaking.
Here are the part numbers and prices from Sunset for the screw receivers and bolts to go with them.
996.561.653.04 $130.80
996.561.654.04 $130.80
900.378.173.09 $.48
Also, I attached the TSB, whence came the part numbers.
Bobby,
Local dealer gave me a employee pricing of $125 for those parts. I didn't purchase the screws tho.. Can you not reuse the screws already on the car?
Thanks,
Getting a hardtop has not been an easy process. The only consolations have been it's the perfect color match and I paid $150 for it. The shipping was $420..and now I'm about to spend another $200 (have a $50 gift card from Porsche dealer) for the receivers. Tho, I think it will be worth it once I have the top on.
I just ordered the retrofit kit for mine: 000.043.300.46
So far my top experience has been:
Top: $250
Paint Job: $450
Retrofit Kit: $350
But it looks awesome with the hardtop on! I think you'll be please with the outcome!
It looks great! I don't know if you get snow there but since my car has become my everyday ride here in NJ I am really enjoying the hardtop. It changes the character of the car, It's a little quieter and has more head room, then with the cloth top.
I found one on EBay for $450-about 1 1/2 hours-be sure to get securing tool-The top I got was silver and my car is gray-does not look too bad-I am holding out on painting it!!
Bobby,
That is sweet looking. I can't wait to get my top installed. The receivers are coming Friday. But tomorrow I'm going to start taking the bayonette receivers off the car.
Thanks! I can't wait for spring to get here though! Hardtop or not, winter sucks!
Also, I discovered that my parts, if ordered seperately, would have been circa $750. Ordered at the kit 000.043.300.46 was only $350.
As I am about to do the same operation, I would be keenly interested. Specifically, I would be interested in any pitfalls or challenges to avoid.
Was there any adjustment needed, or do you just follow the diagram and screw the stuff in?
Ok,
I removed the receivers. Really a painless job. There are 3 screws that holds the top cover. In order to get to the middle screw, you need to remove the 4 plastic fasteners that holds the carpet covered panel which is not described on the Renntech article.
Then there are 4 screws (10mm) that holds the receiver in place. I went ahead and detached the electrical supply (rear defroster I presume) from the receiver instead unplugging it from the car. It's hard to get your hand in deep enough to remove the plug. I plan to reuse the power plug.
Awesome hookup on the instructions! Very appreciated.
Now, my question is one of adjustment. When I replace the pins on the hardtop, how do I adjust it? It looks like you can slide it forward and back about 1 centimeter and up and down about 2 cm.
What is the proper gap for the front? Just enough to make the seal bulge a little?
What about ride height? What should the gap between top and clamshell be?
I too just purchased a hardtop from a fellow lister (thank you Greg) and soon it will be on it's way to Texas. Tomorrow I'll order the same retro H/W Kit so any additonal pics/install insights are greatly appreciated. BTW while I'll have hr open install the new h/w I'll also be dropping in the "smartop" mod option I also purchased.
BTW Here in Texas we got 12" of snow last Thursday! Never thought I would have to shovel snow in Texas!! ;-)
I'm in Rowlett and bought my parts from Boardwalk in Plano. They sold me the receivers for $123 per piece. Do you have bayonette type of receivers in the car? Let me know if you need help with the install.
Hey Neighbor!
The Hardtop I bought does have Bayonet ends but I have a 997 that doesn't have any receiving H/w so am ordering kit today from Boardwalk. Once everything lands, if you don't mind, would like to pick you brain over Starbucks (on me)!
Thank you but after hearing the "rattles & Squeeking" feedback on the banonet style and the kit was only $230.00 (Boardwalk) for ALL the NEW style H/W, just went that route.
BTW that igloo ROCKS!!!
2 receivers & 2 screw pins for $230 or just receivers? If you have bayonette pins but buying threaded screw receivers, then you'll need to replace the pins too.
Ok, it wouldn't be right to start a thread and not post pictures of the results. Exactly a month after I won the hardtop on Ebay, I finally got the top installed.
$154 for the Hardtop.
$420 for shipping.
$250+ for the receiver mount.
so the $150 top cost $830 to get rolling down the high way....
this is an aweful lot like some of my "good deals"
BTW I might have some stuff you might want to buy
Look great.. what suspension are you sitting on?
HELP!!
I just installed all the hardtop mounting hardware (used Porsche "retro fit kit" 9With all new "screw type" hardware). The only thing I can not figure out is how to remove the wire lead/connector attached to glass from the old Bayonet style mounting pin I'm replacing w/ new scre type. I can take the bolts of, yes but how do I gain access to remove the old wire lead and install new?? I'm stuck...
Sorry, I should have been more clear, it was the hardtwar on the acutal hardtop I was reffering to, see my post here
https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...ml#post7353248
BTW, while I had her "open" I dropped in a "smartop" module and built a hardtop stand (out of 1" PVC). My plan is to eventually get a EZ Hoist but I can get them to respond to emails or phone so guessing they might be out of business..
The Hardtop looks & SOUNDS AWESOME!!
LOL, Just saw my Freudian slip "typo" in the first line, it should have read "...clear, it was the hardtop on..". The reality for me is I was at "war" struggling initially but prevailed in the end! ;-)
BTW, thought I'd share pics of the hardtop stand I made out of 1" PVC, works great!
