Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
Probably the model of plugs or possibly type of crush ring.
Leading evidence: 'model of plugs or possibly type of crush ring' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'model of plugs or possibly type of crush ring' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). I know my bikes oil filter part number always changes due to super techs changing materials.

I took my car to a local indy (Motorwerks - great guys) and they said it would make the most sense to start by changing the plugs and going from there.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.
About a week after an amazing trackday at Harris Hill [see below]...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MowJYSsaWFI
...the car threw a CEL. The car was running about the same - at least to me. Two days later, the CEL went out. Awesome. || Not so awesome - the CEL came back. I took my car to a local indy (Motorwerks - great guys) and they said it would make the most sense to start by changing the plugs and going from there. When I went to pick up the car I was told it still had its original plugs (the car is 50K miles, and 8 years old) and two coil packs were cracked. (!!)
Now the car runs unbelievably SMOOTH! You mean that rough, mean-**** idle it had had
since I've owned it
isn't "normal"?!?! You mean those snaps and crackles from the exhaust isn't just the old-school raspy flat-6?!?!
I'm the idiot
.
The engine now runs new car smooth. I should have done this 2 years ago.
Please let this serve as a public service announcement -- evidently Porsche recommends changing the plugs every 60K or 4 years... I am floored at what an improvement this made.
Thanks!!
Unfortunately I had the open back case on the camera so there was a lot of wind noise... Having videos of the DEs is terrific, but makes me much less productive the following week
About the plugs - Im still laughing at myself. What a "car guy" I am... Just a few days prior I was sitting at a stoplight watch my car shake thinking how rough the idle was... Well, not anymore. I should have read through the old maintance records more thoroughly I suppose.
Is that a special lens? Its a cool perspective - the sound is good at low speed and just fades out at higher speed which is better than overkill
I don't what ypu mean about beeing un-productive though

So did the mech give a way of spotting the german plugs from the factory? Copper crush ring or old model of plug?
Malakas, good for you!
Since your engine is running in top form, now you should be able to feel the additional 15 HP you got after you installed the aluminum gauge rings I sent you!
No... Im using the GoPro HD Hero... the above video was recorded in 720p at 60fps - which I think is a 140 wide angle - then I "downgraded" it to 480p to import into Youtube. If you watch the video in Youtube the quality is a little better. Its a sweet camera!
Pac996: thats a great question... not sure how he knew the plugs had not been changed. Also unsure how the coil packs were cracked... maybe the very first set has some German markings... interesting.
Tim: those rings are worth at least 20 bhp... !!
Thanks for your track vid, nice.Glad to hear we can 'improve' our 911s without spending lots of $. I better look at my records for a plug change...bet they're from '99.
oh yeah. He said there were misfire codes - but didn't say which one(s). Then when he was in there he found the 2 cracked coil packs. ( all done about a week after the track ).
Although, I wish I would have done this before the DE - I was pushing it pretty hard. It would have been nice to have optimally firing plugs! Lol
When I picked up the car we plugged a laptop into the obd port and went for a drive - no codes!
