I can't remember if it was for the 993 or 996, but somewhere I saw for one of these that the clutch could be replaced without engine removal.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My local indy is quoting 18 hrs. for a new clutch which includes engine removal. I can't remember if it was for the 993 or 996, but somewhere I saw for one of these that the clutch could be replaced without engine removal. Anyone know for sure? If yes for 996 any additional info. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

18 hours is crazy. My dealer charged around 9 hours labor to replaced the clutch. Don't know if the engine has to be removed but the tranny has to be dropped.

POST 3Original post

No. Engine does not have to come down, just the tranny.

POST 4Original post

What Palting said. ^ The only time the engine has to be removed is when it's time to replace the dome light bulb by the rear view mirror! J/K!

POST 5Original post

Porsche Dealers are trained to take the engine down with the trans attached to do a clutch so that is how they charge. You can drop the trans alone saving a lot of time and that is how most independent shops do. This is how it was explained to me.

POST 7Original post

4-6 hours for a clutch change if you have a lift and know what you are doing. Even most stealers only charge 10-12 hours.

POST 8Original post

As Dharn said, 4-6 hrs max! A clutch replacement should be no more than about $1000 for parts and labor. Now if you need a new flywheel, then the price jumps quickly.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 5524240

Ask them if you can make an appointment early morning and tell them you need the car back by the end of the day. If they can do it, I guess you should pay for max 8hrs.

POST 10Original post

Just did mine (99 C2) and my friends a few weeks earlier (04 C2). Parts (no flywheel) were under $500. It took about 9 hours to do. That included jacking up the vehicle and placing it on four jackstands.. You do not have to remove the engine on the 996. Just the transmission..

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 5524240

That's a red flag to stay away from that stealer. My clutch replacement cost $1360 with parts/labor.

POST 12Original post

Maybe your indy was thinking of a clutch job on a 944

POST 13Original post

I had a dealer do mine in half a day while they did the RMS (or was it something else....something that involved the tranny coming out anyway.......). I ended up paying for parts plus one hour as the rest was warranty. Your guy quoting 18 hrs means either he has no idea what he is doing, or, he is ripping you off.

He said his local Indie, not dealer. Sometimes the indies are worse than dealers. Autothorityor Autoauthority in NoVa is one to avoid, they charge much more than a dealer would.

POST 17Original post

18hrs! First time that ever I touched a 996 tranny to do a flywheel replacement, it took me 10 hrs max. and I do not have a lift! Joost

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Let me ask this question again adding that my car is a C4, not a 2 wheel drive car.

POST 20Original post

I just read an article on a 993 clutch replacement compared to a 996, and the 996 was by far, much faster. Maybe your mechanic was quoting a 993 clutch job?
