From what I heard it will be easy to save weight, but not to get more power so the approach 'not to lose any' is probably the good one.

Suggestion

The Mod II welds a second outlet from the muffler itself using the "nipple" that was designed for the factory PSE.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking for a nicer sound without Hp/Torque loss. I'm focussed on Fabspeed here because a highly credible and unbiased R'lister has recommended them. What I'm hoping to find is someone who has a before and after dyno test to independendly (not the manufacturer) confirm if there are gains/losses from swapping the stock mufflers with Fabspeed mufflers (stock cats/headers.) Anybody done that? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

From what I heard it will be easy to save weight, but not to get more power so the approach 'not to lose any' is probably the good one. I'm about to install some Fabs' headers on the 4S and was thinking about making a try without any mufler There are cheap kits that allow to bypass them. So I will be able to share the experience of the headers (mostly about noise) and would be glad to get yours when you eventually get some mufflers. Cheers from LG.

POST 3Original post

And that kind of stuff (pseudo English version at the bottom of the page) ? http://cgi.ebay.fr/Porsche-911-996-S...QQcmdZViewItem

POST 4Original post

The best approach to save weight is the bypass, but it seems to be very noisy and not a beautiful noise ( see video here ) so I don't think I'm going to try this. What do you think about the flap idea; that would bypass mufflers only when a certain pressure is met in the exhaust pipe, unleashing Hell for the guy behind?

Someone did that quite a while back, can't find the thread now. With just the muffler swap, nothing happens to the curve. Better sound, nothing else.

POST 6Original post

I put in the fabspeed muffler by-pass... MAN is it crazy sounding!! Then I took them out and went back to stock as I could no longer hear after 3 days of driving. Its really loud and if you are wearing a helmet all the time, maybe OK.. but for DD NO WAY My next move is the MOD II exhaust mod from stock to get closer to the PSE sound. I heard this at the track and thought it was the best sounding car on the track... when I asked what it was, the driver turned it off and back on... WOW I was in shock! The system sounds perfect for DD and that added little sound we all desire. (plus the mod can be done VERY cheaply.. however there is no ON/OFF switch for the MOD) Search for MOD II for details GL Ed

POST 7Original post

I bet you'd get a couple horsepower out of them, since they are less restrictive. The main thing is that they sound great - and that's worth it right there.

POST 8Original post

These are not going to gain you any real HP and 15-30lbs weight savings is negligible. They look nice and sound good. If you want great sound and better flow do the Mod I DIY on a set of 3.6 cans. AWESOME!! Only about $200 too!

POST 9Original post

Guys, I read a lot here about these Mod I and II DIY... what's that ? Do you have any link ??

POST 11Original post

Mod I and Mod II there is a thread that is on page 2 now of the 996 forum called Modding the 3.6L mufflers for a MKII design ( 1 2 3 4 5 ... Last Page) this thread has good pictures of the mod II and 1 picture of Mod I but lets you get the idea. Ed

POST 12Original post

thank you ivan so much, i love rennlist heheheh so for the 3.4 its is recomended a small link pipe between the two big ones, .... this mod is gonna be fun

Check out the threads, but I don't think they address the mod completely. Previous threads have sectioned the Mod I to only 3.4 cans and the Mod II to the 3.6 cans, but you can do either one to a set of 3.6 cans. Basically the Mod I welds a short bypass from the main exhaust to the outflow pipe and skips the muffler all together. IMO it works very similar to the PSE in that when you are at idle, or just cruising it still sounds pretty stock. As soon as you WOT the thing growls and roars but not enough to get u in trouble. This is what I have. The Mod II welds a second outlet from the muffler itself using the "nipple" that was designed for the factory PSE. I don't have this mod, but the videos seem a little too mellow for me and not enough gurgle. Either way, this is a GREAT mod! Only $200-300 and it makes the car sound like it should have from the factory.

POST 14Original post

so you recommend mod 1 only for 3.4 , do we have a size recomended for the link pipe? thank you

POST 15Original post

Here is the ultimate PSE Mod thread.... 34 pages of comments & pics. Enjoy! PSE Mod Thread

POST 16Original post

omg im all exhaust and muffler modded out.... heheheh thanks this stuff is great

POST 17Original post

just when I thought I had this one pegged, I am not sure again.. I was going to do the mod II to a set of 3.4 cans, now I see plenty of "not worth the time" posts and am thinking of the Mod I anyone tried BOTH mods on a set of 3.4's? LOL This might get ugly! Ed

POST 18Original post

heheh yes this is now freaking me out too... can we do both mods? is it do'able? ( i can envisage these mufflers with a spaghetti pattern of tubes coming out lol)

POST 19Original post

something like a MOD III ? (sorry for poor welds!)

POST 21Original post

yeah this is the ultimate muffler mod, lets post it in the DIY section heheheheh this is funny great work ivan can i send you my mufflers? lol

POST 22Original post

I don't hink you will be any loss frmo any exhaust on these cars. The question is: are you looking for better sound or better performance? PSE will give you better sound without any better performance since PSE is based on the on the same restircitve/heavy cans as the stock exhaust. If you better performance look at Fabspeed or Tubi. You get better sound, more power and less weight. I have a Fabspeed, but I never dynoed my mufflers separately. With a pair of Fabspeed mufflers and a K&N 63-series intake, I picked up 22 rwhp (from 270.1 to 292.1) on a dynoject 248C. Gains across the entire the entire powerband from 3K (lowest rpms on the dyno) on with 14 rwhp at 4500 rpms. Search the old posts and you will find the dyno graphs. I never dynoed the intake and exhasut separately,

Porx, I would go with a 2-2.25" pipe for the bypass. You could also buy a used set of 3.6 cans off ebay, and mod them for even better sound.

POST 24Original post

Thank you medtech i was thinking that, for the 3.6 cans i would do mod2 wouldnt i?

POST 25Original post

hi 02 to be honest a nicer sound would be sufficient as i think a car as beautiful as the 911 (in all its guises) needs to sound a little special. But enough for you to drive it in town without having noise polution police on your case, and enough to drive it on the country lanes and hearing it under load with the sound it deserves. I know there are some aftermarket stuff, fabspeed etc ( in fact i have modded my 964 with a cargraphic system) and its sounds awesome but too much for every day to, this is my everyday car so just a little mod on the cans should do the trick hehehe
