I highly recommend it, it's not expensive and ( without sounding like a commercial or an employee of Neutrogena) it's the #1 Dermatologist Recommended Suncare-

As for sun protection, I use a Neutrogena product " Fresh Cooling" Body Mist Sunblock SPF45- Before I leave the house I apply it (it's a light spray) to the extremities and on my hands and face- it is so light by the time I get to the Cab, it's pretty much absorbed so "ickiness" and "stickiness" is a non-issue in the car and the smell is quite pleasant.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's been just over a year since I've had my 01 C4, and I learned this one thing: no matter how much a cabrio seems like a cool idea, I just don't care for the drop top. I find myself with the top up, and generally it seems like nothing but downside:
- Extra dust/dirt on theinside
- Weight/stiffness compromise
- Looks compromised with the top up
- Extra cost, potential breakage
- A roll cage for the track.... good luck?
Oh well, I suppose. Love the car otherwise!
I love convertibles and when I had my Boxster S the top was always down but I did get tired of the extra maintenance and the sorted issues I had with the top, so I went with a 996 Coupe, I also like the Coupe look much better but I do miss the drop top, At least I have my old Targa to satisfy some open air motoring.
Sorry!!!!!!!!!!!
Love mine even though I can't use it year round or even if I prefer the top up and air cond. "on" on those really stinky hot days............on a summer night cruising down a country road chasing the moon, listening to the burble of the engine, the sucking sound from the intake...................ahhh man that is so amazing!!
Pete
The top on mine is down most days. HT stays off until the continuous rains of winter in the NW. Actually, I Like the looks of the car with the soft top up. Reminiscent of a speedster. Track reports have claimed almost no performance penalty.
But I would guess a soft top for someone who doesn't like it is worse than a HT & sunroof for someone who wishes they had a rag top. The good news is that you know it for your next purchase and won't drop the extra money for one.
I made the same mistake when I decided to buy a spider because I couldn't find a coupe that I wanted in 6 month of search.
The spider is great at about 20% of driving that I do, most of the time I also find myself driving with the top up.
I miss my Z3 roadster. The C4S is a much better car and suitable for the track, but nothing's as glorious a good top-down drive. I was a roadster weenie though. If it was 45 degrees or warmer and not raining, then the top was down.
potato, potatoe... there's no right or wrong answer, only what floats your particular boat.
I like coupes, too - I have less than zero interest in a cabriolet, but I recognize that some folks feel the opposite way. It's all good, 'cause Dr Porsche was wise enough to offer both options.
Using a bra (on the car) falls in the same category - some folks say No Way, I say Save My Paint.
So true. I absolutely LOVE my cab. I've driven it about 20,000 miles in 2 years winter and summer. All told, the top has been up for maybe 400 of those 20,000 miles and usually by request of the passenger. I want a GT3 but I can't imagine life w/o a 911 convertible. If I do both the wife will kick me out and I'll have to decide which one to sleep in!
I had a Boxster S because I couldn't find a 996 in my budget then. It was a great car just hated the top. I out a hard top on it trying to keep it a while longer.
I found it mostly to hot or cool for the top down, but it was nice a few days.
I've never seen a soft top I think looks good with the top up.
Robin 993dx, Salayc,
I know it's a choice, but I've always thought of people who daily drive convertables in SoCal as a lunatic fringe craving skin cancer and that sexy shoe leather look.
Although I do love driving my car home at dusk with all the windows down and sunroof open.
Dusk or early morning are the only time I open up my sunroof.
I know some love their cabs, but I'm with you, if you drive with your top down in intense sun and don't have on a good layer of sunblock, then skin cancer is heading your way.
Love my cab! Cruising on the weekend down PCH with the top down............now that is therapy! I've put a about 5k miles on it since I got it in March and I would say 4k of it -has been top down. I have been conscientious about the damage the sun can do so I've invested in and applied sunscreen. Nonetheless here's a battle scar :
BTW, the only regret I have buying the Cab is that it's isn't a Turbo Cab
E.Coli! Ha ha ha, now I can agree with the top down, on a sunday, shooting down the PCH. I'm talking about the characters I see, top down, 1:00pm, in stop and go traffic on the 405, stuck behind a semi....lol...crazy town....
I hate putting on sunscreen, sticky and stinky, how do you keep it off the interior surfaces?
I also have red hair and light skin, which doesn't help....
Sunscreen is the nastiest thing for auto interiors. You've gotta stop that stuff contacting leather and laminated surfaces if you want to keep them in good shape.
My company used to have an automotive coatings business (sold off) and one of the greatest challenges was trying to find interior coatings that would resist sunblock... the industry is working on it, but there's no perfect solution yet.
My problem was the person next to me singing in the cab with the top down. I just don't need that much attention... I find the convertible to be noisy and a bit intrusive, skin cancer aside. My convertible was before skin cancer was invented...
When I drive my spider with the top down I always keep the radio volume low, because I don't want any car next to me making comments about my music of choice. Opera..... I mean I wouldn't want them to think that I am over doing it... Italian car and opera.....
Agreed nothing worse than sitting in traffic and literally being "cooked" in stop and go traffic. Fortunately the Cab usually comes out during the weekends when it's a little less congested ( except near the beaches).
I highly recommend it, it's not expensive and ( without sounding like a commercial or an employee of Neutrogena) it's the #1 Dermatologist Recommended Suncare-
. Hope that helps!
I went out on a yearly Ferrari owner's club run from Woodland hills to Ventura back in June of this year with my spider top down. I drove about 9 hours that day with the top down in mid summer heat, got stuck behind some 3x8s on the run with really bad carb settings. I came home with a giant headache and clothing that smell like gasoline that lasted two days. Talk about a miserable experience.
Well, we (Minnesota) are coming of the best summer for a cab that I have ever seen, so my wife and I are actually talking about a cab for our 20th anniversary. Seems like the only way to go is to have one of both. [
I](Although while I was at the service dept, I happened to see a 2008 V12 SL600 on the lot--looks great top up or top down, and 496 HP is not bad either . . .)[/I]
I would have opted for a newer Targa - but found my coupe - and it just wasn't a major decision point for me. I love the simple looks, outside and inside the coupe.
But... I've had a few convertibles (and one was an MGB that was thrashed up and down PCH in my 20's on the west coast). My last one was a BMW 330, and it frustrated me to no end. Living in South Beach, Miami, it was usually too warm, or too bright to keep the top down for long. But worse than that, it was the most expensive catbed I've ever owned. I had covered parking and the stray cats used to love to "nest" on my triple-layer convertible top. Between cat hair, cat sick, and cat scratches on the paint - I finally had to sell it. That's the primary reason why I think I'll never own another ragtop - but then again, never say never.
