I believe the door speakers in mine were replaced with something that can handle more bass though.

I replaced the passenger one with a factory one and just ordered another factory one for the driver's rear.

When I replaced my power amp with a five channel unit whose sub channel operated at 2 ohms, the solution was to re-wire the subs in series.

For the HiFi and BOSE systems, in order to squeeze out more output from the limited power of the amps, Nokia, HAES, and BOSE chose to use low impedance drivers in the doors.

If you look on ebay Super Paulie does some adaptor mounts, or if you search on youtube you'll find video's to DIY your own adaptors using the remains of the old speakers.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I noticed that sound stopped coming out of the drivers side dash speaker and tested replacing the rear speaker to the dash so I could confirm the speaker is blown. It is and needs to be replaced.
I left the rear speaker in place in the meantime, but noticed that it does not fit correctly.
Maybe I did something wrong, but I could not make them fit properly and didnt want to push too hard.
Are the rear speakers different than the dash ones? I will be replacing them with the factory ones, but wanted to confirm as will be ordering soon.
Thanks in advance for your insights!
I do think they are different. My car had the base (no amp) stereo and the rears had separate tweeters but the fronts did not!
I dont think the speaker grilles are different, but when I replaced them with the Hertz setup from Rod at CAI (all 4 of these speakers were the same) I did not change the locations of the grilles.
Dash and rear speakers have different part numbers for all four locations. Here's the secret decoder ring when searching the PET:
V stands for "vordere" which is German for front
H stands for "hinter" which is German for rear
L - left
R - you guessed it - right
M441 - base speaker option
M490 - "hifi" speaker option - adds tweeters and amplifier
So:
996-645-037-01 - V/L M490 - front/left w/ tweeter
996-645-035-01 - V/L M441- front/left w/o tweeter
996-645-048-01 - H/L M490 - rear/left w/ tweeter (except cab)
996-645-046-01 - H/L M441 - rear/left w/o tweeter (except cab)
996-645-038-01 - V/R M490 - front/right w/ tweeter
996-645-036-01 - V/R M441- front/right w/o tweeter
996-645-047-01 - H/R M490 - rear/right w/ tweeter (except cab)
996-645-045-01 - H/R M441 - rear/right w/o tweeter (except cab)
Now for the curve ball regarding the cabs...sides are swapped in the rear.
Disclaimer: I have the M490 option, so I could be wrong regarding the lack of tweeters in other cars.
Haven't looked into those previously, but only two part numbers according the PET. :
996-645-501-00 for everything up to MY02
996-645-502-00 for MY03 and later
Same for left and right, and M490 option only. Guessing the PN changed with the switch to MOST. Maybe

can chime in.
As far as I recall the front speaker mounts are slightly different shape to the rears.
TBH I wouldn't bother replacing with OEM speakers. I'd suggest replacing with some Alpine spg-10c2 units which you can pick up fairly cheap on Amazon. If you look on ebay Super Paulie does some adaptor mounts, or if you search on youtube you'll find video's to DIY your own adaptors using the remains of the old speakers. This will probably work out cheaper than the OEM option, & sound better too.
Thanks for asking this question I had been wondering the same. And thanks yaz for the list that is super helpful.
My car has the 490 option, and I blew out my passenger rear speaker two days after I bought it and the drivers rear just started to fail. I replaced the passenger one with a factory one and just ordered another factory one for the driver's rear. The originals lasted nearly 24 years and a PO added double amps and a crossover (maybe other mods?) and even with the stock speakers the sound quality is excellent, better than my 2014 Benz with the Harman Kardon package. I believe the door speakers in mine were replaced with something that can handle more bass though.
One thing to keep in mind is that they are only available in black, so if you have a different color interior, space grey in my case, you need to reuse your old speaker grills. Getting the new speakers out is really easy the main speaker is just pressed on with no glue and the tweeter is held in with a clip. However, the old speakers will both be glued into the grill, so take your time getting them off, so you don't break the old plastic.
The L/R door and subs in these cars are where things get a little challenging. For the HiFi and BOSE systems, in order to squeeze out more output from the limited power of the amps, Nokia, HAES, and BOSE chose to use low impedance drivers in the doors. They have standard 5 1/4 mounts, but both require a 2-ohm speaker. I've tried running standard 4-ohm drivers, but they suck. It's been a while since I studied the schematics, but I believe the factory subs are running at 2-ohms too. On non-BOSE /pre-MOST systems (before 2003), the door speakers were classified as "FULL RANGE" speakers, not necessarily subwoofers. In post 2003-on, the MOST based "HiFi" option had subs in the doors for the coupes and in the footwell for cabs, the BOSE sub was behind the rear seat.
In a 2003 Coupe with Bose, there are two sub drivers inside the bass reflex housing, that each operate at one ohm, and they are apparently wired in parallel from the factory. When I replaced my power amp with a five channel unit whose sub channel operated at 2 ohms, the solution was to re-wire the subs in series.
