Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Speaking from experience, there can be many gremlins hiding inside used gearboxes.
Leading evidence: 'Use gearboxes' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check around' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

C4s,
I'm not sure if the ones you buy from Porsche for around $10k are new or rebuilt like the engines are. I should have referred to them as new.
The transmissions are serviceable but all the gears/syncros are pressed on the shafts and you need a very big press to get them off. There are a few places doing it. I had one rebuilt last summer. I think my mechanic sent it to someone in Texas. It worked out fine.
On this topic, I think this is the single worst characteristic of the 996. People want to talk about the RMS but having a tranny that you have to send half way across the country or purchase a new one just to new syncros or whatever is BS. Just my $.02.
Jim
Maybe you can ask your mechanic for the name of the shop that rebuilds transmissions.
Porsche does not sell internal parts for the 6 speed. The mechanics at my dealer have told me the same story about a special press being needed. At their tranining school 6 speed transmission rebuilds are not covered. Would be nice to find a place in the US that can do it.
Shoot, at those prices, I would think that it would make good business sense to invest in the equipment and be the only US rebuilder of 996 gearboxes! Someone has to keep Porsche honest!
Tool,
It's my understanding that many G50 parts work in the 996 gearbox. Others can be sourced and even others need to be made. My work was done by a shop in Lake Havasu, AZ. They did a very good job. I'll PM you with more specific contact info. I'm a little hesitant to put it on a public forum even if it is cheap advertising.
Jim
Thanks for the info. I'll pass it along to the next guy. This is a company Scouser found but it is in Belgium.

I remember the guy on this board a year or so ago that was out of warranty and had a bad bearing. Dealer was happy to sell a new or rebuilt transmission, but they do not sell the only part he needed, the bearing. He found the company that made the bearing but they would not sell him one because all the bearings were presold to Porsche.
Then there was guy on renntech that had what sounded like a worn syncro. The dealer wanted to charge him $3,000 to tear down the transmission to verify what was wrong. So I asked him, then what will the dealer do. Tell you they cannot get parts and do not rebuild them? He ended up with a rebuilt from Porsche.
I sure would like to see this special press to see why it is different than any other press.
I feel like the donkey in Shrek
This is all great advise, Thank you
So far I'm down from $12k for new to a "Newly" reconditioned unit from Porsche -2 year warrnaty and UNLIMITED miles
for only $5180. Is that a good deal?
Last year I paid around $4500 + core for a Porsche reman trans for my '99 C4.
It, and the about $600 labour, was covered by my warranty.
If it hadn't been covered by the warranty I would have put the trans in myself and saved the labour...
trev
I didn't realize that the cost of the rebuilt trannys had come down that much. It's starting to sound like a pretty good deal. Not for new syncros but for a major failure it's not bad.
Tool,
I don't think there is anything special about the press. It's just bigger than a run of the mill shop would have. That along with the skill to build the transmission and the knowledge of how to source the parts probably makes California Motorsports' services fairly unique. Not for long I hope.
Good luck all,
Jim
