Phase 4 was the final phase where I installed the sub enclosures and configured the door speakers as mid/bass.

I replaced my rear factory speakers, door speakers and the dash speakers w/ Rod's Hertz products and installed a very large Hertz amp in the trunk.

Suggestion
I bit the bullet and ordered the 4-way system from Rod (amp, sub's, replace all factory speakers).

Phase 2 was replacing the stock head unit with an Alpine unit with XM Radio and Ipod connectivity.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone been successful in installing at least one 10" woofer in their 996 cab? I've seen the small boxes that go against the passenger floor behind the passenger ankles...but they seem a bit ugly.
I was thinking the side panels in the rear (where the factory speakers) are might be sufficient?
Anyone have any experience, tips or photos of this? Or anything else along the subwoofer lines?
Thanks.

(996 cabriolet style enclosures, (rear footwell location) with dual 8" subs)
Porsche 996 Cabriolet rear floor (1999-2004 coupe or cab) subwoofer package (shown above):
These 996 rear floor enclosures come in pairs. Three words: Custom Fiberglass Fabrication. The rear of the enclosure is molded to sit in the rear floor area similar to the earlier 911 enclosure models. Seat travel is only affected about an inch from rearmost travel, keep in mind the 996 seats travel extremely far towards the rear of the car.

Thanks for the lead, Programmatore. I spoke w/ Rod last night and ordered your subwoofer system, along w/ an amp upgrade and speaker upgrades. He really seems to know his way around the 996.
I'm looking forward to the upgrade and a DIY activity.
LOL, that was pretty funny gota911.
I dropped an email to caraudioinnovations last night, haven't heard back but hope to soon.
Anyone know whats behind the panels in the rear area where the rear speakers are? Any chance of getting them in there?
In many pre-996 versions, I've installed a single sub (8 or 10 in a custom enclosure or a Bazooka) at the front of the trunk at the bottom. The sound was superb and no cabin space was given up. I'm not sure if the firewall changes in the 996/7 models still allow enough sound to pass, but it only takes a few extra feet of wire to try it out. The added benefit is the "fun factor" of your passengers wondering how you got so much bass out of the dash speakers since they can't find the sub!
Infinity Basslinks fit right between the rear seat tops and the rear deck. It sticks up about 6-8"s or so but affects the seat arrangement zero!
It has one 10" driver and one 10" radiator.
Cool beans!
Yeah, Rod is a good guy. He is very helpful over the phone. I built my system piece meal starting with the dash speakers, then the door speakers and amp (and headunit from Crutchfield) and then the rear footwell subs -- and Rod guided me through every step of the way.
Very good customer service too -- when I couldn't shake the alternator whine I was getting when I mounted the amp to the firewall, I had to move it to the bottom of the trunk. Rod sent me a shelf to sit on top of the amp absolutely free! I highly recommend CarAudioInnovations!
Rod also mentioned that if you occasionally 'needed' the floor space in the back seat, there's a quick disconnect to remove the subwoofers and place them in the trunk. Also, apparently they only affect the last 1" or so of seat travel (according to their website- will see soon enough).
I also started my upgrades with Rod yesterday. I'm going a couple phase approach...
Starting off with Hertz's in the doors, dash and rear. Going to send him my panels (tools on their way) and have him do the mounting. Picking up a Kenwood double DIN locally at his recommendation.
Once all thats done, amp and subs will be "phase two."
I plan to post pics etc along the way to help others.
Rod is very helpful - I couldn't agree more. GREAT guy.
Mike
Mike, like you're planning to do, I did my upgrade in phases. Phase 1 was upgrading the dash and door speakers. Just swapping out the dash and door speakers with Focal speakers from Rod made a big improvement in sound quality -- makes you realize just how crappy the stock speakers are.
Phase 2 was replacing the stock head unit with an Alpine unit with XM Radio and Ipod connectivity. While it sounded better than stock and the Ipod integration was great, I realized I needed an amp ASAP because the head unit wasn't supplying enough power to the speakers.
Phase 3 was installing an Audison amp. Now the system is really sounding great for
most
of the stuff I listen to. I configured the door speakers as subwoofers and it sounded pretty good except for heavy drum and bass and rap/hip-hop. I knew I needed the sub enclosures for the rear.
Phase 4 was the final phase where I installed the sub enclosures and configured the door speakers as mid/bass. Now the system is perfect!
I think you'll be happy with your system. Rod will not steer you wrong. My advice though is not to wait too long for the amp upgrade. Good luck!
mikeshaver and skiracer:
How are your stereo installs coming along? I took advantage of the holiday weekend to upgrade my headunit to a double-DIN Pioneer Premier AVIC F90BT satnav. It's pretty cool -- it has iPod (audio and video) support, Sirius radio, plays CDs and DVDs, iGo navigation and built-in Bluetooth. Of course my old iPhone (first generation) would not sync the contacts so I had to upgrade to a new iPhone 3G.

The nice thing about the new AVIC satnavs is that they are based on Windows and completely hackable!
I've got my stuff on the way actually. I've gone with a single DIN Kenwood as I don't want to lose the replay ability of my starmate. I also ordered the Audison Amp, wiring kit, and I'm sending him all my panels for Hertz separates up front and hertz full range in the rear. I've also ordered the bare Kenwood subs that he puts in the custom enclosures and I'm going to try and make some boxes for them myself.
I plan to post pics of the process once everything arrives over the next month or so!
I'm done w/ the hard part. I replaced my rear factory speakers, door speakers and the dash speakers w/ Rod's Hertz products and installed a very large Hertz amp in the trunk. My subwoofer cables have been run to the rear seats and at this point I'm just waiting for Rod to complete the custom fiberglass enclosures he makes and ship them to me.
Even w/o the sub's, the sound is remarkably improved. The amount of clean power generated by this massive amp is very impressive; such that I can't hear the motor rev when the top is up. Too rainy today in Boulder for a top-down drive, but soon enough!
It took me longer than anticipated, but Rod is extremely patient - I simply took my sweet time and ended up w/ what appears to be a professional installation. Since I'm not too handy w/ tools or all that mechanically inclined, I was probably his most challenging customer to date, but it's all good.
Programmatore - you're now on my list (of fellow Rennlisters who have contributed to the lightening of my wallet as I continue to mod the P-car). Thanks for the great tip on Rod, but you guys are beginning to cost me a small fortune!
