Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys, I just had an oil change done at an independent shop and noticed that they used amsoil 20w-50. Should I be concerned with the higher vis.? I live in San Diego so the temperature here is quite moderate. Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

As far as I know the Porsche "approved" oils are this: Castrol Syntec 5-50 5-40 Mobil1 0-40 Mobil1 5-40 Havoline F3 Synthetic 5-40 Valvoline Syn Power 0-40 Valvoline Syn Power 5-40 Also Mobil Super 10-40 Pennzoil/Quaker State synthetic European formula 5-40 Pennzoil Performax 5-40 This was from a TSB from April 2004. Things may have changed. I know that on the 996 engine Porsche as went to a much lighter oil because of lifter noise (and wear?). Hopefully someone like Loren will respond with the current TSB. Whether or not 20w-50 will harm your car seems to be a huge debate in the Porsche community with Porsche only saying here are approved oils. The air cooled cars used a much higher viscosity than the current 996 engine.

POST 3Original post

that really sounds kinda high for the car. i wouldn't stray that far from the recommended oil weight just on principal. but, i haven't seen any proof that using a higher viscosity oil like that can damage your engine. i would rather just trust that the porsche engineers know what they're talking about!

POST 4Original post

i run 15W - 50W Mobile 1. Unless you consistently starting your car in sub freezing temps, then this weight is safer for running hard. As a matter of fact, Porrsche recommends this weight in the manual. Actually 15W - 40W is recommended.
