Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

the exhausts came from a 01, have they made any changes since?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My local dealer (Jack Daniels - New Jersey) informed me that he won't install a set of PSE exhausts (purchased through ebay) without the electronics. They stated that it might cause the check engine light to come on, and cause potential probelms for the O2 sensor. Is this correct, or am I being had for 8 hours or labour at $109 an hr?
Something smells fishy to me.
You are being had. I installed mine as a DIY about 15,000 miles ago. No CEL, sounds just wonderfully intoxicating. The electronics are there just to comply with noise laws in Europe where it has to be within a certain dB range at certain speeds. It has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with CEL, O2 sensor or anything else related to engine performance.
Do it DIY, about an hour if you know what you are doing, 2 hours if not, then change to another dealer. I think your dealer is in the fish market.
While I had the electronics installed, my dealer (Barrier in Bellevue) said it was fine to install it without the electronics.
Your dealer definitely wants a chunk of the money they lost because you bought it on ebay... I'd look for someone else to install it.
I believe most any halfway decent mechanic can install it for you. Some people install it themselves.
the exhausts came from a 01, have they made any changes since? I think I'll take the car to my trusted independant to have them done. Thanks for the help!
My dealer installed it (on my 996) without electronics - no questions at all - no issues with CEL, and never had a problem with it. The dealer either doesn't know what they are talking about or they are giving you a line. While I had my dealer install it, it is a very simple bolt on procedure and you should have your independent do it or do it yourself (or talk it to any muffler shop like others have done - someone on the board got it done for $75 at Midas, I think).
you don't need dealer to install PSE, it's 2 hours job for any person with fingers.
you will not have check engine light prob.
one of my car had pse installed after delivery with no electronics and no prob.
another 996 i have had pse from factory, and my dealer at my request, disabled the electronics. i like my car loud ALL the time.
PSE w/no electronics here as well.
There are two different versions of the PSE - the later version fits on all 996s the early version only fits on 3.4 L 996s
Here's a pic of the early version:
Here's the later version, it has larger bypass pipes:
You don't have to have the electronics installed but . . . I really like the option of quieting the car down on command. I find it particularly useful when navigating the tight streets of Georgetown when the boys in blue are in the vicinity because, while the sound of the PSE bouncing off the brick townhouses is music to MY ears, I don't need the added attention. It is also useful when your spouse (or date) says that they would prefer to talk than hear the P-car sonata. You might not use it that often, but it is great when you need it.
Speaking of which, mine stopped working last week. It is all on all the time. Anyone have any ideas why it might have stopped working (the light on the switch still works normally).
I did mine 2 months ago..myself--4-5hrs taking it easy no electronics--believe me once you hear the sound you wont want to turn it off!!!!!!!
Im right up the road from JD where are you located and what do u drive?
Mike
