Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

*NOTE, I am NOT attempted to start yet another thread on engine replacements and the faults of the MY99. Rather, I'm hoping to highlight some positive cases for those of us 'unlucky' enough to own out of warranty 99's running on their original engine. I've just hit 73K on mine...

POST 2Original post

Hi I have a 99 with 63K. Car has been flawess no issues. Puts a smile on my face every time I drive it!

POST 3Original post

99 with 43k runs great (knock on wood) my quandry is that I don't think there is another 996 that would be a big enough difference as a whole that would make it worth upgrading to - I don't want a third car in 6 years with essentially the same interior All i want is RWD with preferably more performance and a more modern driving experience. That basically means a 997 carrera 's' or a fictional 3.8 cayman

POST 5Original post

99 with 40,000 kilometers..i know its nothing, but so far the car has been cheaper to run than a honda civic.

POST 7Original post

51k miles with no leaks, no issues....just replaced coolant tank but other than that it's been trouble free and an terrific car

POST 9Original post

99 C4 51k miles Original no RMS just replaced the air pump.

POST 12Original post

279,840,000 feet on my March 1998 build C2 (not counting distance going backwards). No oil usage or leaks.

POST 14Original post

70k miles on mine, including 2 full seasons of track/DE days

POST 15Original post

My 99 has 47K miles - never been to the dealer since I have owned it!

POST 16Original post

99,800 miles no rms repairs as a matter of fact no major repairs at all. Just those G*&D@^^ tires. every 10k.

POST 17Original post

61k with new clutch and RMS done at 60k service.

POST 19Original post

52,000 miles with RMS replacement around 40,000. I did need a new transmission at 43,000.

POST 20Original post

45k miles. Repairs: Variocam sensor seal oil leak (repaired under CPO). Coolant bottle (DIY repair). Air-oil separator last week (repaired under CPO). No RMS problems. No significant oil usage (1/3 quart per year).

POST 21Original post

22,500 and trying to make up for lost time............

POST 22Original post

84,638 miles with an EVO Supercharger added at 72,xxx miles. Original engine. Recent (84,000 miles) leakdown test revealed 7% to 9% across all cylinders. Not bad, I think.

POST 23Original post

65K........drives strong...no leaks.....but about being cheaper than a Honda Civic..I don't know...the MOD bug bit me a couple of months ago....and I could have bought a new Civic for the operation to get the mod bug out!!

POST 24Original post

Right at 59K, all original, no RMS, no oil useage, bone dry.

POST 25Original post

Bought in Dec '05 with 58k...now about to hit 70K...

POST 26Original post

19,800 miles on 99 C2 (manufactured Nov 98) - one RMS (during previous owner, revealed on service records - prior to 7500 miles). One leak, that was a hole in a hose. No further RMS, ETC.

POST 27Original post

1999 C4, 72K miles, I just took car to dealerfor oil seepage, does not leak on floor or leave puddle, but I sometimes have a burning oil smell after driving. Dealer says leaking RMS, intermediate seal and spark plug O rings (the triple). I'm driving it and watching it and will deal with it when the original clutch needs replacing. Did some other stuff too, coolant tank, seat belt sensor. Currently all is well.

POST 28Original post

Mine (99 C2 coupe) has 48k on the dash and only had to do a clutch and coolant tank...otherwise doing good so far.

POST 29Original post

99 Cab, with 40K miles, no RMS.. fixed coolant leak, air leak.. o/w excellent shape..

POST 30Original post

39,500 miles.... RMS at 39,000...... Coolant bottle leak at 37,000....

POST 31Original post

'99 with 34k miles. Replaced RMS, Coolant tank, (all under extended warranty) and seat belt sensors (no warranty).

POST 32Original post

79k, needing first clutch replacment. No RMS problems.

POST 33Original post

99 c2 w/15000 miles. Replaced clutch (!), coolant tank, MAS. Daily (short) driver.

POST 35Original post

Daily driver, 99 C4 Tip, 41500 miles. New radiator hoses in front left wheel well (475), new lifters (4800), new oxygen sensor (475).

POST 36Original post

39K, no leaks, no new clutch, just regular service.

POST 37Original post

I have 91,000 on my '99 C2. I drive it hard, fast, and as often as possible. It's my daily driver. A couple months ago I took it on a 3000 mile round trip going 95mph the entire way and it performed flawlessly. The problems I've had with it have cropped up in the last couple weeks: Airbag light came on just today, and my turn signal doesn't reset and turn off after I've centered the wheel. The engine runs very strong and I couldn't be happier. I don't burn or drip any oil at all - NONE.

POST 38Original post

52,000 miles, daily driver. Coolant tank at 45k. Nothing else - let's hope no RMS ever, no clutch till 100k...

POST 39Original post

69k here with original RMS. Coolant tank replaced at 65k along with window regulator. Other than that, easy, fun filled, Tip driving. I am not a fan of the 10k mile tire rotation though!

POST 41Original post

VERY informative thread to us 99 owners. What a spectrum of issues/non-issues. It still looks like the majority are happy with their sweetspot (heh, heh) rides. Hope to see one of you on PINKS (but not against that monster VW bug).

POST 42 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Agreed mostserene...thought it was about time we heard some of the 'good' on this board, instead of all about the issues of these 99's.

POST 43Original post

and to really go against conventional thinking, 532, I actually LIKE the streamlined look of the 996 body and believe it will stand the test of time. But I realize I'm in the minority on this issue.

POST 44Original post

90K miles. Semi-daily driver, never had an RMS issue, no leaks whatsoever. Replaced the following under warranty: MAF, headlights (leaking), coolant tank Had to replace clutch at 33K, new pads and rotors at 75K Religiously serviced, had to replace these items recently: Installed new battery, Idle Control Valve, Fuel carbon cannister. That's it. Engine is still bone dry, coolant tank never leaks, car never overheats, AC still blasts cold, I change the oil every 7500 miles and it's never burned or needed oil between changes....i drive it like is stole it and it has never let me down.......still have the same grin since the day i picked it up.

POST 45Original post

March 98 build 44k miles no problems runs strong, only recently did coolant tank and driver side power window repair

POST 46Original post

39500 Ocean Blue/Gray Cab-----dailey driver no issues----knock on wood!!!!!!Apple

POST 47Original post

Just turned 50k. No motor issues, no leaks. Two seasons of D.E.'s as well. Daily Driver.

POST 48Original post

'99 C2 - 55K miles, original motor, no RMS problem, no tranny issues, clutch is strong. Touch-wood ! cheers !

POST 49Original post

I've got about 42K on my 99' at the moment. Previous owner replaced the coolant tank, no trouble since I've owned it for two years!! No RMS, just oil seepage at the right rear.

POST 50Original post

87,500 miles. 10K with supercharger. tracked regularly.

POST 51Original post

52K miles on my 996 cab. Just replaced the coolant bottle (crack) and valve cover seal (small oil leak). Replaced steering column (stucked), instrument cluster (fuel gauge doesn't to to Full) and air bag controller (air bag light) 6 months ago. Seat belt sensor also recently went bad but since it doesn't affect air bag operation, I am not fixing it. Everything else fine, knock wood. It's my wife daily driver (50+ miles/day.) BTW, this is my first post in the 996 forum.

POST 52Original post

98 CII 3.4L spent a fortune but only on mods. No problems with engine at 64K just a beautiful car. Tracked once a month. I'm sure it does it good.

POST 53Original post

Is anyone noticing a common thread here? I too am about to click 80K and no mech. issues whatsoever. Is this year charmed? I knew the '99 would be a bargain which is why I waited so long to trade in my '96. But I had no idea the thing would perform flawlessly year after year as it has. Not only is this '99 the most reliable Porsche I've ever owned (out of 4), it's by far the most reliable car I've ever owned (out of six BMW's, two Landrovers, one Chevy, and one Nissan). Amazing.

POST 54Original post

Yes the 99 is well-regarded around here. In terms of price, performance, reliability - most 996ers seem to like the 99 and give it a thumbs up. I think they look better than all the newer 996s also. I like the head-lights and the narrow body.

POST 55Original post

Even pre 99 here (1998 RoW). 25K miles (only 500 have been by me) and still on original RMS (no leaks) and runs very strong. "99s curse" is WAY over rated....

POST 56Original post

Today, original engine, clutch, RMS Replaced coolant tank and starter

POST 57 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wow, you win Len! What's your secret?

POST 58Original post

Len, nice photo. You are my goal (unless I can trade up to TT).

POST 59Original post

I have 102,500 kms (about 64,000 miles) on mine. I got it last summer at 54,000 miles. No serious issues, just little stuff that wasn't right and I wanted to bring it up to a standard that I could maintain. I put a clutch in it at 62,000 (and RMS at same time) but the RMS wasn't leaking at all. I've never had an issue with the coolant tank, either. What are the symptoms of this? My car doesn't leak or burn oil. I do likely change the oil more than necessary, though. How often do you change your synthetic oil? I know what the book says, and quite frankly, I'm just not comfortable waiting that long! Nice job of the pic (Len) at the car turning 100,000 miles. I was snapping when mine turned 100,000 kms, but I didn't have my camera with me. Poor planning, I guess.

POST 60Original post

put the camera in the car last week in preparation ... just a freak I guess

POST 62Original post

73 000 km. RMS started leaking at 60 000 but is not dripping, so I left it unchanged since then. Coolant tank replaced at 50 000 km. Alternator replaced at 64 000 km. First clutch. Thorsten

POST 63Original post

Bought my '99 with 19K on the clock...now has 23K. Used as a daily driver. Cllutch is engaging pretty far up, but isn't slipping...but will eventually need to be replaced....seems unreasonably early for a clutch...but other than that...no other issues. Chuck

POST 64Original post

1998 76k no rms...and whooped an 02 996 just the other day...

POST 65Original post

My 99 has 30K miles and I have never been to the dealer except to have an alignment done. Few minor bugs I have fixed myself, but overall the car runs exceptionally well and it's a daily driver. (I only drive 5 miles back and forth to work.)

POST 66Original post

Here's my prediction - In a few years, we'll all look back and say, "Remember when you could get a great '99 996 for under $35k? That was the deal of the century!"

POST 67Original post

114K baby! Replaced the tranny at around 100K, other than that, mostly minor stuff (expansion tank, cam cover leak). hope to pass 200 with luck.

POST 68Original post

99 C2 39K and going strong. no major issues. knock on wood
