Cllutch is engaging pretty far up, but isn't slipping...but will eventually need to be replaced....seems unreasonably early for a clutch...but other than that...no other issues.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

*NOTE, I am NOT attempted to start yet another thread on engine replacements and the faults of the MY99. Rather, I'm hoping to highlight some positive cases for those of us 'unlucky' enough to own out of warranty 99's running on their original engine.
I've just hit 73K on mine...
99 with 43k
runs great (knock on wood)
my quandry is that I don't think there is another 996 that would be a big enough difference as a whole that would make it worth upgrading to - I don't want a third car in 6 years with essentially the same interior
All i want is RWD with preferably more performance and a more modern driving experience. That basically means a 997 carrera 's' or a fictional 3.8 cayman
45k miles.
Repairs:
Variocam sensor seal oil leak (repaired under CPO).
Coolant bottle (DIY repair).
Air-oil separator last week (repaired under CPO).
No RMS problems.
No significant oil usage (1/3 quart per year).
84,638 miles with an EVO Supercharger added at 72,xxx miles. Original engine. Recent (84,000 miles) leakdown test revealed 7% to 9% across all cylinders. Not bad, I think.
65K........drives strong...no leaks.....but about being cheaper than a Honda Civic..I don't know...the MOD bug bit me a couple of months ago....and I could have bought a new Civic for the operation to get the mod bug out!!
19,800 miles on 99 C2 (manufactured Nov 98) - one RMS (during previous owner, revealed on service records - prior to 7500 miles). One leak, that was a hole in a hose. No further RMS, ETC.
1999 C4, 72K miles, I just took car to dealerfor oil seepage, does not leak on floor or leave puddle, but I sometimes have a burning oil smell after driving. Dealer says leaking RMS, intermediate seal and spark plug O rings (the triple). I'm driving it and watching it and will deal with it when the original clutch needs replacing. Did some other stuff too, coolant tank, seat belt sensor. Currently all is well.
I have 91,000 on my '99 C2.
I drive it hard, fast, and as often as possible. It's my daily driver.
A couple months ago I took it on a 3000 mile round trip going 95mph the entire way and it performed flawlessly.
The problems I've had with it have cropped up in the last couple weeks: Airbag light came on just today, and my turn signal doesn't reset and turn off after I've centered the wheel. The engine runs very strong and I couldn't be happier. I don't burn or drip any oil at all - NONE.
69k here with original RMS. Coolant tank replaced at 65k along with window regulator. Other than that, easy, fun filled, Tip driving. I am not a fan of the 10k mile tire rotation though!
VERY informative thread to us 99 owners. What a spectrum of issues/non-issues. It still looks like the majority are happy with their sweetspot (heh, heh) rides. Hope to see one of you on PINKS (but not against that monster VW bug).
and to really go against conventional thinking, 532, I actually LIKE the streamlined look of the 996 body and believe it will stand the test of time. But I realize I'm in the minority on this issue.
90K miles. Semi-daily driver, never had an RMS issue, no leaks whatsoever.
Replaced the following under warranty:
MAF, headlights (leaking), coolant tank
Had to replace clutch at 33K, new pads and rotors at 75K
Religiously serviced, had to replace these items recently:
Installed new battery, Idle Control Valve, Fuel carbon cannister.
That's it. Engine is still bone dry, coolant tank never leaks, car never overheats, AC still blasts cold, I change the oil every 7500 miles and it's never burned or needed oil between changes....i drive it like is stole it and it has never let me down.......still have the same grin since the day i picked it up.
I've got about 42K on my 99' at the moment. Previous owner replaced the coolant tank, no trouble since I've owned it for two years!! No RMS, just oil seepage at the right rear.
52K miles on my 996 cab. Just replaced the coolant bottle (crack) and valve cover seal (small oil leak). Replaced steering column (stucked), instrument cluster (fuel gauge doesn't to to Full) and air bag controller (air bag light) 6 months ago. Seat belt sensor also recently went bad but since it doesn't affect air bag operation, I am not fixing it. Everything else fine, knock wood. It's my wife daily driver (50+ miles/day.)
BTW, this is my first post in the 996 forum.
Is anyone noticing a common thread here? I too am about to click 80K and no mech. issues whatsoever. Is this year charmed? I knew the '99 would be a bargain which is why I waited so long to trade in my '96. But I had no idea the thing would perform flawlessly year after year as it has. Not only is this '99 the most reliable Porsche I've ever owned (out of 4), it's by far the most reliable car I've ever owned (out of six BMW's, two Landrovers, one Chevy, and one Nissan).
Amazing.
Yes the 99 is well-regarded around here. In terms of price, performance, reliability - most 996ers seem to like the 99 and give it a thumbs up. I think they look better than all the newer 996s also. I like the head-lights and the narrow body.
Even pre 99 here (1998 RoW). 25K miles (only 500 have been by me) and still on original RMS (no leaks) and runs very strong. "99s curse" is WAY over rated....
I have 102,500 kms (about 64,000 miles) on mine. I got it last summer at 54,000 miles. No serious issues, just little stuff that wasn't right and I wanted to bring it up to a standard that I could maintain.
I put a clutch in it at 62,000 (and RMS at same time) but the RMS wasn't leaking at all. I've never had an issue with the coolant tank, either. What are the symptoms of this? My car doesn't leak or burn oil. I do likely change the oil more than necessary, though. How often do you change your synthetic oil? I know what the book says, and quite frankly, I'm just not comfortable waiting that long!
Nice job of the pic (Len) at the car turning 100,000 miles. I was snapping when mine turned 100,000 kms, but I didn't have my camera with me. Poor planning, I guess.
73 000 km. RMS started leaking at 60 000 but is not dripping, so I left it unchanged since then. Coolant tank replaced at 50 000 km. Alternator replaced at 64 000 km. First clutch.

Bought my '99 with 19K on the clock...now has 23K. Used as a daily driver. Cllutch is engaging pretty far up, but isn't slipping...but will eventually need to be replaced....seems unreasonably early for a clutch...but other than that...no other issues.

My 99 has 30K miles and I have never been to the dealer except to have an alignment done. Few minor bugs I have fixed myself, but overall the car runs exceptionally well and it's a daily driver. (I only drive 5 miles back and forth to work.)
Here's my prediction - In a few years, we'll all look back and say, "Remember when you could get a great '99 996 for under $35k? That was the deal of the century!"
