Having used K&N air filters on my motorcycles and had the misfortune of riding many a time in the pouring rain (nothing you can do on a long trip when you aren't at the destination), I can say that the engine performed flawlessly.
Leading evidence: 'Use k&n air filters' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean combustion chambers' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
In fact, in many applications water injection is used to cool hot intake charges, reduce detonation, and clean combustion chambers.

Suggestion
Run my car with stock, a K&N filter and maybe a cold air intake to measure the difference.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

ok i now this has been discussed before and i read the two fourms about it. im looking to get an air intake. either fabspeed or the K&N, evo is out because of price.(rather get fabspeed muffler bypass for that price) so here are my questions. A. For the K&N is says you have to return to stock if in bad weather conditions. Do you have to returnit to stock if its going to rain, cause if you do i rather go with fabspeed. B. There was the big price battle on one of the threads and this question is more towards vivid racing. If i bought the K&N i would be willing to pay 299 for it but only with free shipping because thats what hopupracing.com offers. also if anyone knows of any better deals then please write where at. o and about the HP, as long as i gain a couple hp then ill be happy. im more in it for the sound then that. but the 23HPextra does sound good.
Why not just get a K&N filter for your existing setup, no hassles and probadly more of the benefit. We're planning on doing a dyno run soon. Run my car with stock, a K&N filter and maybe a cold air intake to measure the difference.
Good question on how weather will effect. I have the K&N on order so I can probalby write more later; however, I have looked into this as it was previuosly mentioned. On the rear lid the only opening really of concern is that around the fan. After washing the car very little water gets into the engine compartment and it apear that the filter will be slightly lower and to the left of the fan. In addition K&N supplies a dry filter charger that is to be placed on the filter. I have not seen this before:however, the pictures apear that the covering would protect the filter from water. I do not think that there would be much of a problem if the filter got a little wet. It would take a lot of water to do some harm IMO and I do not see that much coming through a filter that may have gotten a little damp. With that I said, I wonder if the dry charger restricts airflow and if you can keep it off when you know the weather will be fine. I do like the design of the EVO because it seals with the deck lid, but the filter plumbing and housing seem smaller on the EVO. Again just my thoughts as I have nott seen it in person yet.
im looking to buy tommorrow and i really want the K&N im just worried about the bad weather thing. i mean will i have to change it to stock everytime i got the the car wash???? what about if theres a huge thunderstorm and i have no way of hiding my car??? What about snow??? I just need someone who uses the K&N cold air intake daily to answer thoughs questions. they don'y even need to have it on a porsche. I don't think just changeing the filter would give me the sound that im looking fro since the air sitll has to go through the restrictive plates in the porsche air box.
sorry i posted my second post before i read what you wrote. that sounds right. I think what they mean by the warning is so that you don't take like a gallon of water and just pour it on the filter. im going to check if they use the same waring on all there cold air intakes. because if they do then that just means there just saying that so no ones sues them or something like that. also this is kind of off topic but sometimes after driving my car hard i go to the car wash to wash it and steam from the water touching the hot engine comes out from the top of the enigne compartment. is that normal or do i have a broken seal somewhere???
so yeah im pretty sure im going ot be buying it tommorrow. still need to sleep on it. im still kind of freaked about the bad weather thing but i just looked in the engine bay and it looks like it would be alsmost impossiable for any water to get in there. i wash my car every week but i guess i could make some plastic cover or something everytime i go to the wash just to be on the safe side.
Small amounts of water shouldn't be any concern. Obviously you don't want to dunk the filter so all your engine is ingesting is water, but water droplets and vapor are no problem. In fact, in many applications water injection is used to cool hot intake charges, reduce detonation, and clean combustion chambers.
Frankly, I would be wondering if more water didn't enter the engine compartment from underneath as thrown up by the wheels from the ground. Having used K&N air filters on my motorcycles and had the misfortune of riding many a time in the pouring rain (nothing you can do on a long trip when you aren't at the destination), I can say that the engine performed flawlessly. I'm not sure why the warning is there. Perhaps to prevent submersion in water during freak floods (some trucks and SUVs might still muster on) that would 'suffocate' the engine?
Like you, I prefer the design of the K&N cold air intake to the Evo, but the latter does look better insulated from inclement weather because it doesn't sit below the fan.
