The 2001+ MY they changed the location, it's much better.

I hate the fact that 996s had a facelift in 2002 (and other changes)-- This keeps my daily thoughts occupied on when and how I'm going to do the conversion

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

The ease of obtaining rock chips - I guess it's unavoidable with the shape of this car, while being low to the ground, and running into small things coming up from the road at speeds from 80 to 100 mph - a small price to pay for such an amazing ride...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

We all know about the common problem areas with the 996 such as, RMS, Coolant tanks, engine, etc.... But what I hate the most is having to put my greasy hands on my trunk to close it tightly. I have to keep a cloth in my driverside armrest to use to keep the prints off the trunk when I close it. This really makes me look obnoxious.
I will replace the badge if it becomes damaged. If a hood becomes damaged or scratched from any debris between my hand and the delicate clear coat, that requires a repaint.
There's already some small clearcoat scratches (that can be seen in certain lighting) from other people closing the hood.
Passengers who pull hard on the doors without waiting a tiny millisecond after the door-handle activates the window partial roll-down to facillitate opening the door.
My least favorite thing is the switch *** for the headlights. It feels cheap and plastic.
I close the front hood with my knee. It sounds weird but it works great.
I've been thinking about this the whole day, I finally got it. I know what I don't like about this car. 40yrs., and the dummy engineers at Porsche never thought about it. It only took me 8hrs. I am a genius. Now consider,... if my boss's wife just elopes with another guy, I drive my Porsche to work, how in the world will it be appropriate to walk in there with a big grin on my face. There has to be an "emergeny grin remover" spray as a standard feature. The Stuttgart idiots never thought about this, did they. That's it,... this is my last Porsche.
A cruise control light which doesn't actually tell you whether the cruise control is on or not.
A worthless analog speedo.
A digital speedo in the wrong place, off to the side.
No sound system. Oh, I forgot, these is supposed to be one but it just makes static.
I have cupholders, with the sound advice in he owner's manual to not use them while driving. They are nearly worthless.
Gearbox with way too long a throw (yes I know I can fix that, but Porsche should have done it right to begin with).
The fact that 997 Turbo's will be more than $50K.
Yeah yeah yeah.. we've heard that before. It's if some people think that owning a Porsche means that you will no longer desire a cup of Starbucks or maybe grabbing an In-and-Out combo meal on the way home.
I think it's funny that some of the hates are some of my favorite things. I love the digital speedo and the location and I love the fact that there are no cup holders.
The thing i hate the most... the fact that no matter where i park it, someone in a beater HAS to park 4 inches from it. Does Porsche know that their cars attract beaters? Is it magnetic or something????
No tilt steering wheel - I'm a tall dude, and once I'm in, I'm cool, but getting in and out makes me look like a dork. Especially at a busy gas station, where everyone looks up as you cruise in, then you have to mangle yourself to get out.
I used have to have to use a firm push with the entire palm of my hand to latch my trunk. Then, the latch malfunctioned so that I was forced to use the DIY from RennTech to repair it.
Then, I reinstalled it according to same DIY .... and now I latch my trunk with a light press of my fingers on the latch (or anywhere else, but I like that location).
Give it a try .... it appears from casual observation that many, many 996 hood latches are simply out of vertical adjustment.
The ease of obtaining rock chips - I guess it's unavoidable with the shape of this car, while being low to the ground, and running into small things coming up from the road at speeds from 80 to 100 mph - a small price to pay for such an amazing ride...
The stock sound! Thats most likely the only part I hate - until I out on PSE that is :-D
Besides that, I really like it that they didnt put in cupholders and those things. Its a sportscar - not a 4x4
...having to clean out every single little crevice on my car every single time the fire department puts out the engine fires with all that damn white crap they spray on the vehicle
hate is such a strong word....but i do dislike the location of the release latches for the trunk and rear bonnet. mine have become pretty scuffed up from my shoes when getting out of the car.
See, I knew someone was going to say this.... Simply ridiculous! It's a Porsche; it's built for every day driving. I could maybe see no cup holders in an Enzo.
Dude, that's the point. As you mentioned, it's built for driving. If you want to EAT, then go to a restaurant. I mean, look around you when you're driving next; everyone is changing lanes without looking or signaling, people drive WAY too slow in the passing lane, and do everything except focus on the road. Next thing you'll want is a DVD player up front so you can watch a movie on a long trip. HOW could Porsche have forgotten THAT?!
LOL this is the exact reason we need cupholders!
I don't want to actually "hold" my Starbucks coffee when I'm driving home or to work- and so I need a cupholder. I would like to concentrate on driving, rather than spilling hot coffee on my ********* because I have to hold it between my legs- or on the carpet as I wedge it between the seat and door sill..
These are daily drivers, and just because I don't drive a mini-van doesn't mean I don't need something to hold my drink on the way to my destination. It's funny, but some people are actually "no-cup holder-elitests" who take pride in having impracticle elements built in to the car.
I hate the fact that 996s had a facelift in 2002 (and other changes)-- This keeps my daily thoughts occupied on when and how I'm going to do the conversion
I think that had a lot to do with the 80's boom. People with more money than common sense.
Now, people work hard for their money, they spend it carefully, and so you would think a $100,000 car is not a casual purchase.
How about the way water comes in the driver's window in the rain. It drips right on the leather grab handle and arm rest. No matter how slightly you open it.
The boxtser is way worse though, maybe all the cabs do this more. I currently have a coupe.
ElTorrente, you're cracking me up - that's exactly right. If it was a weekend project car, I'd understand, but we're driving these things every day. Where should the coffee go? (besides that other guys ***...?)
The glut of fingerprints on the windows after it has been parked in public. I don't mind so much Riad's problem of crazy bitches constantly jumping in for a ride.
I get it
That's why he has a convertable....see if you had a coupe like the resat of us, this wouldn't be happening, very few could jump through the sun roof
The sound. There is none! These cars are so quiet it doesn't sound like a sportscar at all. Sportscars are supposed to be loud, obnoxious beasts that are so responsive that driving one strikes fear into lesser mortals.
I'd like to add, finding a good parking garage, especially one that has "self park". I've been training downtown (18th and I) for the past couple days, yesterday was terrible. Today I found a nice large building with pleanty of parking room and elevators instead of a dungeon and having to walk in circles to exit.
The low beams: Can't see anything above knee level at any distance, yet people flash me because they are too bright
Sound system: Hopeless waiting for a MOST iPod solution
Gnawing RMS fears: Thanks, guys
Nevermind performance driving, it applies to all driving. You'll never see a set of cupholders on any car in Germany. The preocuppation with doing twenty things at once in the cockpit is a purely American thing. The Germans take driving seriously.
Every building downtown is self park if you open the wallet sufficiently.
Finding ones that do not require you to open the wallet is more difficult.
Biggest gripe about the 996? That the replacement pods for the in-dash cappuchino maker take so damned long to get here from Stuttgart. They really should cut a deal with Starbucks.
no problem
The Downward Cycle of 996 Ownership On Rennlist
The Illustrated Narrative
<--- little timmy is excited about owning his new porschA and joins rennlist to chitchat with fellow owners.
<---- little timmy sumbles upon thread after thread of RMS issues.
<------ now worried, he asks 993 owners what they did when their cars have issues
<--- 993 owners tear into poor timmy abuot his useless vaser-kooler "crappenvagen", thus causing poor timmy much anguish.
<-- suddenly, little timmy finds a rash of threads about 993 valve problems and his faith in God is restored, as he waves
to the old foggies and peels out
in his slightly leeky, yet still very Uber 996
The End.
the only thing i don't like about my 996 is that it's mine and i don't have to want one it's the want one thing that drives people crazy so i hear or maybe SPEED LIMITS!
Hey Club 411, I can help. I speak jive. 2fas4u heard that what drives people crazy is not having a Porsche and wanting desperately to get one. Since he already owns a Porsche, he has lost that desire to get one. He doesn't like that. He also doesn't like speed limits.
Anyway, cut me som' slac' jak! Chump don wan no help, chump don git no help. Jive *** dude don got no brains anyhow. (Either that or the "period" key is missing from his keyboard.)
Hmmmm..... ahh yes the quote from the movie
"Airplane"
Now what bothers me most about the 996 is: Breaking the speed limit, people in the parking lot that don't give a flying _ _ _ _ about door dings, and nothing else because it makes me happy everytime I drive it or look at it!
The Thing i hate most about my 996 is that women who seem to be morally opposed to keeping their cloths on always want a lift.
oh wait....thats a good thing. I guess my 996 is flawless afterall
I didn't think anyone else would pick up on that obscure line from Airplane.
LOL! I guess there are a lot of nerds like me on this board.
Here's another great sequence from Airplane -- not as obscure as the Jiveman sequence:
Ted Striker: Surely you can't be serious.
Rumack: I am serious... and don't call me Shirley.
Guess what movie these two lines came from.......
"I have to get my tool"
"That's not a tool, that's a Damn Brick"
Hint, in the movie he is stealing a Porsche.
