Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 1 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've searched this forum as well as googled but no luck so far. I'm replacing my stock mufflers with GHL's. Thanks to the DIY on renntech, everything's worked out pretty well so far. However, I can't get to loosen the bolts on the tail pipe clamps. I've drenched the bolt/screw assembly with WD40 and let it sit for a while, to no avail. And I've gone at them with a wrench and a mallet... Does anyone know of another way to get them loose? If not, where can I find/buy these clamps? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. JM

POST 2Original post

Do you have a buddy with a impact wrench and compressor? Part number is 996-111-220-01 (exhaust clamp) and lists for $31.78. You can beat that through Sunset or one of the other discount parts houses. I have the GHL's - love them - or course my clamps came off easily. Good Luck!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

RB- Thanks for the part #. I'm going to check out Sunset. JM

POST 4Original post

I've found WD40 to be an effective rust preventer , but not a very effective rust penetrator . Any auto supply should have a selection of rust penetrating, part loosening specialty products. Additionally, especially when working with exhaust systems, I have found heat to be a very effective tool in loosening seized fittings.

POST 6Original post

Heat them with a torch (off the car) 'til they start to glow. Then they should come off.

POST 8Original post

Yup, mine wouldn't come off either no matter how much/hard I hacked at them. Then I tried some rust penetrator spray from the auto parts store, and 5 minutes later, voila!

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK. Looks like I have a couple of options. I'll try the rust penetrator first and then the torch if that doesn't work... Can't wait to finally get these growling puppies (mufflers) on and hear the music! Thanks to all. JM

POST 10Original post

Jedier I have a couple of used clamps if you need them and don't want to wait on new ones. I twisted the bolts off when I replaced my stock mufflers with the GHL's. The bolts were not worth saving after 95k miles anyway. The original bolts have been replaced with allen head bolts. I used them for a while before I decided to put on the Fabspeed tips. I decided to but new clamps when I put on the tips. I had to order them since HBL didn't stock them.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Steve, I almost went to HBL this afternoon to get new clamps. It didn't even occur to me that they would not stock them. I finally got the clamp bolts to yield this evening. I used some rust dissolvent and applied some serious muscle. It worked. However, the clamps were bent from all my attempts yesterday. So I'm not sure that now that they are back on (I finished installing the GHLs) that they will do their job correctly. In case they don't, I'll take you up on your offer. Thanks! JM

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Steve, Do you have pictures of your Fabspeed tips? How do they compare aesthetically with the stock and the GHLs?

POST 13Original post

I'll try to take one tomorrow. they look like the tequipment tips. I got a good deal on them from Dan at Vivid.
