If they are going to replace the bumper cover maybe you could upgrade to the aero bumper

Hmm, maybe I should look for a retread to run over.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Whelp, I messed up my brand new, used, 996 last night. An 18 wheeler's tire retread struck my front bumper.. There are scuff marks near the license plate and the bumper is broked at the very bottom.
Anyone had the front bumper cover replaced or know what the going rate is for replacement and paint?
That's one heck of an introductory post -- posting about a cracked front bumper! I guess a "welcome to Rennlist" is in order. I am sorry to hear about your bumper.
Since you didn't post a proper welcome post with pictures, it would really help if you at least state the model and year of your Porsche -- especially when it comes to bumper replacements, etc. as there is a difference between 1998-2001 vs. 2002-2004 996s, Carrea vs. Carrera 4S, etc.
Anyway, it sucks that your bumper is cracked but you should use this "opportunity" to upgrade to an OEM Aerokit front bumper if you haven't already done so. There are several good bodyshops in the D.C. Metro Area. I went to Wagonwork Collision in Alexandria (off Rte. 1) when I had my RUF RGT aerokit installed. Wagonwork Collision is relatively more expensive than the others but they do quality work. Porsce of Tysons' (formerly HBL) bodyshop is also quite good.
A stock bumper cover should run around $800-$900. Painting of the bumper should be around $300-$500 (aftermarket bumpers require more prep and will cost a little more). Prices of the OEM Aerokit (Aerokit I for 1998-2001 and Aerokit II for 2002-2004) should cost around $5,000, although they're usually on sale online. The OEM Aerokit includes bumper and sideskirts.
Good luck!
Depending on the color of the car, you may be able to score a used bumper fairly cheap. Dismanatlers will sell them in the $200-$400 range, sometimes you'll see one float on e-bay for less.
I sold my front bumper when I upgraded to the GT3 front for $100. I was glad I even got that much for it! Not much of a market for stardard front bumpers.
Yup! You're lucky it is just a cracked front bumper and that there's no structural damage to the car. Like I said, it's a good opportunity to upgrade to the Porsche Aerokit I -- you can even get the insurance company to cover some of the cost!
Sorry about not indrocing myself..
I recently purchase this '00 996 Cab on last Thursday from a Porsche Dealership in Ohio. I flew out then drove it home that same day.
I'm quite impressed with it's abilty to corner, I actually scared myself a bit last night on a back road.
My original choice was an Infiniti G35 coupe but I found that I could purchase a '00 Porsche Cab that handled a bit better, is bit faster, and has a timeless body design all for near the same price.
What's ironic about this tire retread issue is, back in 1996 I purchase a brand new Nissan Maxima. I was driving to the same exit on 495 and out of no where a volleyball sized rock hit the same spot but on the passenger side of the front bumper, only days after I puchased the car.
I plan to have the Evoms GIAC and Vflow intake installed next week. I have no plans for any other speed upgrades until a few years from now when Nissan Sentra's will be bumping into the 13's in the 1/4 mile..
Oh, I also own a 99 ML430
Welcome to the never ending joys and frustrations of Porsche ownership!
A front bumper cover, if my memory serves me well, is about $600.00 from your Porsche dealership...then there is painting on top of that. So if you go new, you'll probably be looking at maybe around a $1000...maybe more/less.
In any event don't forget about the possibility of making an insurance claim and putting the issue behind you.
Good luck with your 'new' car!
It will fit an '00. LVDell said $100, so for you, sure, $100 (plus shipping). But I don't have a box for it and I have no idea what UPS would charge to ship it.
That's what I'm thinking... Pay $200 to get it taken care of with a slight increase in rates or buy one from a rennlist member and have it taken care of for about $500-600 bucks.
Also, I had an aerokit bumper repaired. If it is just a small crack at the bottom, it will barely be noticeable. I''ll bet your insurance company would pay for a repair and waive your deductible.
I wouldn't even risk asking them. THEY DOCUMENT EVERYTHING!!!! And when you least expect it, BAM your rates go up and they come back with "you reported an accident in 8/2005".
Well, LVDell, I did it. I've been all over the place today. I stopped by a Geico Claims center way over in Brentwood MD(the only ones availbe to see me today). I just got a quote of ~2200, this includes a new rim(there are some deep spider scratches from the steel belts of the tire tread). They will replace the bumper cover, a few panels underneath the vehicle, the rear plastic piece on the rear wheel well and I got them to do some touch up work on the hood.
Well they are going to replace the bumper cover and paint my hood(a huge bonus for me). My car will look brand new..
I asked them about paint peeling and they indicated that they do the work based on Porsches guidelines of mixtures and flex additives and not Geico's standards which I've received on my old Nissan.
The car has been in the shop since 9/6/05..
