Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Went to my local mechanic(good tech, not familiar with porsche 996) for a routine oil change on my '99 996. He found two leaks that he said are an easy repair. The leaks appear to be coming from what he THINKS are the two camshaft position sensors. There is one sensor with a wire from it on each bank of cylindars. Very easy to access from underneath car. My question is, do these sound like cam position sensors and is this a common leak ? Thanks for any help !!! Chris C

POST 2Original post

No offense to your tech but I would value a second opinion with an indy who is familiar with 996's. We worked hard to get these cars and trusting someone who isnt familiar with german engineering may make matters worse. my 2 cents

POST 3Original post

I agree, these cars need to be worked on by someone who knows Porsche(996).If you cant find someone that you can trust, I say take it to your local P-car dealer.

POST 4Original post

Gee I work on mine all the time and I never had a 996 before. It's just a car and not rocket science. I have been working on cars for over 50 years so I guess I have some experience.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I appreciate the thought, but I do value the expertise of this tech. Any info on the sensor and the leak would be appreciated. thanks, cfc

POST 6Original post

Cam cover is a common leak source. You can do a search on this forum.

POST 7Original post

The cam sensors have o-rings on them. You may be able to fix this easily without buying new cam sensors. I think your mechanic is correct. As far as Porsche dealer mechanics being the only people who can work on Porsches, I only take my cars to dealers if the warranty applies. Otherwise I always pick independents first. POST 8Original post

I had the same problem and my o-rings were replaced (not the cam sensors). Simple fix and appears to be pretty common. Not sure what the cost involved is since my car is a CPO and it was covered under warranty.
