Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

About a month ago I began to notice some "discontinuity" when shifting from first to second (and back). The other gears were all very smooth, but going from first to second felt like I was revving the engine and popping the clutch (hard to do with a tip). I took it to the dealer and they tinkered with it for a day and gave it back to me. If anything, the problem was worst. I took it in the second time, again they played with it for a day and returned it. Again, it was worse. I took it in a THIRD time and they again tinkered with it all day. This time they called me and said it was worse. After checking some other things, per orders from the boys upstairs, they ordered me a new tranny. I should get the car back this week. Fortunately this little fiasco is under warranty, but makes me wonder about long-term reliability with the 996. As a side note, I'm really getting excited to get behind the wheel of my C4S. I've been driving a little A4 1.8T loaner, and it redefines "gutless."

POST 2Original post

Did the stealer tell you what they thought the problem was? Your original symptom almost sounds like "normal operation" for a tip -- in 2nd gear, after the shift the revs go up a bit -- the TCU computer retards the timing during the shift and re-advances it -- and it feels as though it's shifting twice because the torque converter clutches lock-up -- sometimes I can feel it, sometimes not, depends on eng load/acceleration etc ('97 Carrera). The problem w/tip servicing I guess, is that they have problems so rarely that the techs don't get a chance to gain any experience troubleshooting them. I've browsed the shop manual about it, and it is an amazingly complicated system. Dan 97 C2 Silver/Blk RoW M030

POST 3Original post

The tip is pretty bullet proof so it's likely your case is bad luck. Could be some metal shaving caught into the gears or the seals not expanding enough to engage gear positively. You should be ok with a new tranny now. Dont' worry about it. If it ever happens to me out of warranty, I'd put in a DSG that will be offered in a year or two.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

With any luck it will be done tomorrow. I will interrogate the tech to see if they can identify precisely what the problem was.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

DSG? Is that anything like BMW's SMG? If so, that would be very nice.

POST 6Original post

DSG is an electronic double clutch transmission. It's a manual without a clutch padle since it's electronically controlled. It's similar to SMG/F1 except SMG is not double clutched. Audi supposely has these and soon will Porsche.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, I've had the car back for a couple of weeks now, and the check engine light came on. Dealer said it may just be an oxygen sensor or something simple. I'm taking it in Monday (again). I also noticed that the front turn signals are not working (no warning displayed on the dash) and that when I lock the car only one of the front markers flashes. This is my first P-car. If these maintenance problems continue, it will be my last. Fortunately, it is still under warranty.

POST 8Original post

CEL can be tranny related due to something missed in install. Not sure what's wrong with the turn signal. Maybe a poor connection. If you didn't buy the car new, are you sure it's not been in an accident? I've had very little issue w my 996 02. I don't think your issues are typical. Sorry to hear.
