Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
I installed the mufflers in about 2.5 hours, and it was the first time I had been under the car.
Leading evidence: 'first time i had been' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'first time i had been' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install mufflers in about 2' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I had the PSE installed without the switch for a while and then finally installed the switch.

It took me 2-3 hours to install the switch, running the wire to the dash is the only hard part.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi, I did a search, GREAT sound clips. I have to have PSE! Is there a DIY post/website?? Is it an easy install for an independent shop? I want it! Who has it the cheapest?
THANKS,
Steve
I knew it. the darn dash switch=wiring into the car! how about a separate remote?? heck, I will pull the car over, pop the rear lid, and have the switch back there!
I purchased a 2000 996 several years ago and it has PSE. I have never seen a "switch" for sport vs. regular exhaust mode. How do I know what mode it was set to without a swicth? Can the dealer or a service shop tell me? The car is pretty loud when I open it up, but otherwise, it is much quieter than my neighbors GT3...Thoughts???? Thanks!
BTW, I am new to the site, but now an addict!!!
The default (no vacuum to the mufflers) is loud. But it is possible that someone tied the valves in the quiet position even though they didn't connect the vacuum and electronics. But unlikely.
The PSE default position is on. The switch activates a vacuum actuator that closes off the bypass pipe. Without the vacuum hookup, it'll always be in the on position. At low RPMs, it sounds close to stock. Above 4000-4500 rpm, the sound is much more aggressive than stock.
your easiest sure way is to compare it with a non pse car. check with some one in your neighbourhood or drive by the service dept at a dealership and compare.
Hell, it sounds awesome to me even at idle. As great as the sound is, I wonder if it may get annoying after awhile. Hence, having a switch to shut it off occassionally is a good idea IMO.
I never find it annoying. And if I need to be quiet, I simply don't accelerate hard. If I had the switch, I would NEVER use it. And the auto cut-out at 25-40mph would be unbearable. Also, which is the switch's default position, or does it stay in the previously set position? IOW, if it defaulted to quiet every time you shut down the car, and upon driving the car again one had to switch sport mode back on, that would be a pain in the butt.
No electronics install was a no brainer to me. I installed the mufflers in about 2.5 hours, and it was the first time I had been under the car.
I had the PSE installed without the switch for a while and then finally installed the switch. I use the switch quite a bit. It is nice to have the option. With the top up I rarely use the switch, so if you have a coupe you might not use it that much. It took me 2-3 hours to install the switch, running the wire to the dash is the only hard part. There are quite a few posts with good tips if you do a search.
The system defaults to loud every time you turn the car on, so you need to use the switch every time you use it on the quite mode.
